THERMODYNAMICS PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR BRIDGE

COURSE STUDENTS (BCE ‘B’)

1. Three pressure gauges are connected to a container consisting of two compartments as

shown in Figure P1.1. If the local barometer reads 750 mm of Hg and pressure
gauges A and B read 300 kPa and 200 kPa respectively. Determine the absolute
pressure in each compartment and reading of pressure gauge C. [Take ρ HG=13600
kg/m3 and g = 9.81 m/s2]

Figure P1.1
2. Figure P1.2 shows a tank within a tank, each containing air. Pressure gage A is
located inside the tank B and reads 140 kPa. The U-tube manometer connected to tank
B contains mercury. Using data on the diagram, determine the absolute pressures
inside the tank A and tank B.

3. The roof of an electrically heated home is 10 m long, 8 m wide, and 0.25 m thick and is
made of a flat layer of concrete whose thermal conductivity is k =0.8 W /mK . The
temperatures of the inner and the outer surfaces of the roof one night are measured to
be 180 C and 50 C , respectively, for a period of 12 hours. Determine:
 the rate of heat loss through the roof that night and
 the cost of that heat loss to the homeowner if the cost of electricity is
Rs 10/kWh.
4. Determine the rate of heat loss from a brick wall (is k =0.7 W /mK ¿of length 5 m,
height 4 m and 0.25m thick. The temperature of inner surface is 12 0 0 C and that of
outer surface is 30°C. Also calculate the distance from the inner surface at which
temperature is 90°C.
5. Define atmospheric pressure, gauge pressure and absolute pressure. Also write down
the relationship between them and show them on a common pressure scale.
6. Describe heat transfer and different modes of heat transfer.
7. Define system, surrounding and boundary.
8. Calculate the amount of energy consumed in a month while charging your mobile,
laptop and lighting a bulb in your room. Assume the light is turned on for 8 hours/day,
the phone and laptop are charged 5 hours/day. The rating of the bulb, phone charger
and laptop chargers are 15 W, 35 W and 45 W respectively. Also calculate the
running cost of you room if 1 unit = 1Kwh = Rs. 12.
