1. Steam expands from 3 bar to 1 bar in a nozzle. The initial velocity is 90 m/s
and the initial temperature is 150oC. The nozzle efficiency is 0.95. Determine
the exit velocity.

2. Supersaturated expansion occurs in a nozzle supplied with steam at 2 MN/m 2

and 325oC. The law for the expansion may be taken as PV1.3 = constant upto
the exit pressure of 0.36 MN/m2. For a flow rate of 450 kg/min determine
1. The throat and exit areas
2. The degree of under cooling

3. A single stage single acting air compressor delivers 20 m3 of free air per
minute from 1 bar to 10 bar. The speed of compressor is 300 rpm. Assuming
that compression and expansion follow the law PV1.35=C and the clearance is
1/16th of swept volume, find the diameter and stroke of the compressor. Take
L/D = 1.7. Also find the input power required.

4. In a certain refrigeration unit, it is required to produce 15 tons of ice from 0 oC

water in a day. The refrigerant used in this unit is ammonia. The required
operating temperature range of the unit is 25oC and -15oC. The ammonia
vapour is dry and saturated at the end of the compression. Assume the
compression is isentropic and actual COP is 55 % of the theoretical COP. Find
the mass flow of ammonia to produce 15 tons of ice and also the required
power for this refrigeration unit. The thermodynamic properties of ammonia
are given below. Take latent heat of ice = 335 kJ/kg and 𝐶𝑝 of water = 4.2
kJ/kg-K

An air-conditioning plant is to designed for a small office for winter conditions:

Out-door conditions: 10oC DBT and 8oC WBT
Required indoor-conditions: 20oC DBT and 60 % RH
Amount of air circulation: 0.3 m3/min/person
Seating capacity of the office: 50
The required condition is achieved first by heating and then adiabatic
humidifying. Find the following:
i] Heating capacity of the coil in kW and surface temperature required if the
bypass factor of the coil is 0.32
ii] The capacity of the humidifier.

6. A furnace wall is made up of three layers of thicknesses 250 mm, 100 mm and
150 mm with thermal conductivities of 1.65, k and 9.2 W/m°C respectively.
The inside is exposed to gases at 1250°C with a convection coefficient of 25
W/m2°C and the inside surface is at 1100°C, the outside surface is exposed air
at 25°C with convection coefficient of 12 W/m2°C.
Determine :(i) The unknown thermal conductivity ‘k’ (ii) All surface
temperatures (iii) Heat transfer rate.

7. The wall of a building is a multi-layered composite consisting of brick (100-mm

layer), a 100-mm layer of glass fiber (paper faced. 28 kg/m2), a 10-mm layer of
gypsum plaster (vermiculite), and a 6-mm layer of pine panel. If h inside is 10
W/m2K and h outside is 70 W/m2K, calculate the total thermal resistance and
the overall coefficient for heat transfer.
Properties: Brick, kb=1.3 W/mK; Glass fiber, kg1= 0.038 W/mK; gypsum,
kgy=0.17 W/mK; pine panel, kp=0.12 W/mK.

8. A small electric heating application uses wire of 2 mm diameter with 0.8 mm

thick insulation (k= 0.12 W/m°C). The heat transfer coefficient (h o) on the
insulated surface is 35 W/m2°C. Determine the critical thickness of insulation
in this case and the percentage change in the heat transfer rate if the critical

thickness is used, assuming the temperature difference between the surface

of the wire and surrounding air remains unchanged.

9. A counter flow double pipe heat exchanger using superheated steam is used
to heat the water at the rate of 15000 kg/h. The steam enters the heat
exchanger at 150ºC and leaves at 100ºC. The inlet and exit temperatures of
water are 30ºC and 70ºC respectively. If overall heat transfer coefficient from
steam to water is 800 W/m2ºC, Calculate the heat transfer area. What would
be the increase in area if the fluid flows were parallel?
