INTRODUCTION
1. The wall of an industrial furnace is constructed from 0.15-m-thick fireclay brick having a
thermal conductivity of 1.7 W/m2K. Measurements made during steady-state operation re
veal temperatures of 1400 and 1150 K at the inner and outer surfaces, respectively. What is
the rate of heat loss through a wall that is 0.5 m * 1.2 m on a side?

2. An uninsulated steam pipe passes through a room in which the air and walls are at 25⁰C.
The outside diameter of the pipe is 70 mm, and its surface temperature and emissivity are
200⁰C and 0.8, respectively. What are the surface emissive power and irradiation? If the
coefficient associated with free convection heat transfer from the surface to the air is 15
W/m2 K, what is the rate of heat loss from the surface per unit length of pipe ?

3. A thick-walled tube of stainless steel [K = 19 W/m◦C] with 2-cm inner diameter and 4-cm
outer diameter is covered with a 3-cm layer of asbestos insulation K = 0.2 W/m ◦C. If the
inside wall temperature of the pipe is maintained at 600◦C, calculate the heat loss per meter
of length. Also calculate the tube–insulation interface temperature.

5. A thermocouple junction, which may be approximated as a sphere, is to be used for temperature
measurement in a gas stream. The convection coefficient between the junction surface and the gas
is h = 400W/m2K, and the junction thermophysical properties are k = 20 W/mK, C = 400 J/kgK,
and ρ = 8500 kg/m3. Determine the junction diameter needed for the thermocouple to have a time
constant of 1s. If the junction is at 25⁰C and is placed in a gas stream that is at 200⁰C, how long
will it take for the junction to reach 199⁰C?

6. A large block of steel [k=45W/m◦C, α=1.4×10−5 m2/s] is initially at a uniform temperature of

35◦C. The surface is exposed to a heat flux (a) by suddenly raising the surface temperature to
250◦C and (b) through a constant surface heat flux of 3.2×105 W/m2. Calculate the temperature at a
depth of 2.5 cm after a time of 0.5 min for both these cases.

7. A load of peas at a temperature of 250C is to be cooled down in a room at constant

air temperature of 10C.
a) How long the peas will require to cool down to 20C when the surface heat
transfer coefficient of the pea is 5.81W/m2K?
b) What is the temperature of the peas after a lapse of 10 minutes from the start
of cooling?
c) What air temperature must be used if the peas were to be cooled down to 50C
in 30 minutes? The peas are supposed to have an average diameter of 8 mm,
their density is 750kg/m3 and specific heat 3.35 kJ/kgK.

8. An electric air heater consists of a horizontal array of thin metal strips that are each 10mm
long in the direction of an airstream that is in parallel flows over the top of the strips. Each
strip is 0.2m wide, and 25 strips are arranged side by side, forming a continuous and
smooth surface over which the air flows at 2m/s. During operation each strip is maintained
at 5000C and the air is at 250C.
a. What is the rate of convection heat transfer from the first strip? The fifth strip? The
tenth strip? All the strips?
b. For air velocities at 3, 5, and 10 m/s, determine the convection heat rates for all the
locations of part (a). Represent your results in tabular or bar graph form.
Solution

9. An engine oil cooler consists of a bundle of 25 smooth tubes, each of length L=2.5m and
diameter of D=110mm.
a) If oil at total flow rate of 24kg/s is in fully developed flow through the tubes, what are
the power drop and the pump power requirements?
b) Compute and plot the pressure drop and pump power requirement as a function of flow
rate for 10-30kg/s.
