INTRODUCTION

It was 2003 and I had just been shown the technology that would change my life
forever. It was called RDP and was a Microsoft tool. At that time, accounting was pretty
much limited geographically. Unless you could get to a client by driving or public
transportation it was a rarity to have someone outside of your vicinity. Larger firms may
have clients that would pay for you to travel there, but small firms, which make up the
majority of accounting firms, rarely had those types of clients. There were also the
clients that might move and mail you their stuff or a referral from another state, but the
majority of any small firm was local. Another limitation was the client needing access to
their accounting software. Many clients used their version of QuickBooks, Peachtree, or
other accounting software. This made mailing, faxing, or emailing financial information
pointless and required a trip to their location.

The RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) allowed a person to log onto a computer remotely,
so when an important client of ours needed a financial report right away, their tech guy

sent me a link with instructions on how to log onto the computer I used to drive 90
minutes to get on. Not only did it work, but it also seemed to work faster than when I
was there. He explained that when I was there I would have several other programs
running, slowing the computer down. Now I have a gateway into the software without
any interference.

It struck me like the lightning bolt Napoleon Hill speaks about in “Think and Grow Rich”.
If I had Quickbooks on my server, I would control the process. I could allow my clients to
log in, eliminating the need for me to go there. Not only that, I could have a bookkeeper
login from anywhere and do the work. I envisioned drinking Pina Coladas on the beach
while my accounting business run without me. In my mind, the travel time issue was
always the biggest obstacle to serving a lot of clients. Not only did I have to get there
but if I could find a competent bookkeeper or accountant, they also had to be local.
Firms that overcame that obstacle were few and far between. That’s why most firms
stay small, in my opinion. Limited by the pool of talent and the geographic constraints of
meeting with them. The RDP tool would eliminate most of that.

Between 2003 and 2018 I had accomplished a great deal utilizing the technology but a
lot of my entrepreneurial endeavors fell short of what I had hoped for. Creating a
remote-based accounting business enabled me to teach my mother bookkeeping and
payroll eliminating her need to travel to her job managing an apartment complex. That
allowed her a new quality of life and allowed me greater freedom in building my
business. I set out to teach my system to accountants but that failed. For starters I
wasn't very good at marketing and accountants just weren't ready to adopt a new way of
doing business. I turned to bookkeepers and created a course for them. This succeeded
on a small scale where I was able to teach a handful of individuals with no prior
experience how to do bookkeeping. A few went on to start their bookkeeping practices
and one got a job doing payroll for a large company. Again, I was stymied by my own
lack of marketing and sales experience. In 2011 I started a seven-year journey of
learning marketing. A college buddy had started a marketing mastermind on the subject
and I spent tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours traveling across the

country to learn what was holding me back all of those years. I met world-class people
and absorbed as much as I could about marketing, business and personal
development. In 2018 I came across a statistic that would be another life changer. Out
of 30,000,000 businesses over 25,000,000 were sole proprietors. This was the worst
way to do business in the USA and I set out to find out why they didn't become S-Corps,
the preferred way to be structured for legal and tax purposes. The answer was plain and
simple. They lacked the information and didn't hire the accountants that would explain
this fact to them. They didn't hire them because they were expensive while being few
and far between. That was it! The big problem to be solved and I created Bedrock
Business Builders to solve that specific problem. I would create a low cost system
targeting sole proprietors while providing the education needed to attract them. This
was what I set out to do when I stumbled upon the RDP technology back in 2004. It took
me over 14 years to learn that it didn't matter if you had a great tool. You had to find a
market and show them the solution.

Today, Bedrock Business Builders Corp has become more than an accounting firm. We
provide a large slate of business and educational services to individuals across the USA
and are proud to have a growing team of US and Philippine professionals that make up
Team Bedrock. We look forward to meeting and collaborating with you on this program.
It won’t just help you, it will help the world!

CHAPTER 1 - THE PERFECT STORM OF OPPORTUNITY

In this chapter, we will be explaining how and why this is the greatest time in history to
be pursuing a career as an accounting freelancer.

The perfect storm of opportunity for bookkeepers, accountants, and tax preparers in
The United States has been developing over decades and was accelerated by the covid
pandemic. Being forced to run businesses remotely, millions of business owners had no
choice but to adapt and started to realize the benefits of outsourcing tasks normally
done in-house. They became accepting and willing to assign important financial tasks to
individuals they had never met in person. The know, like & trust factor, was finally being
accomplished online.

The pandemic also created “The Great Resignation” where over four million
brick-and-mortar workers have left the job market to either freelance or start their
businesses and realize the freedom working from home brings.

● A shortage of good accountants and tax preparers

There are over 30,000,000 businesses in the United States with over 28,000,000 having
between 0-5 employees. There are only about 150,000 tax preparers. That’s over 180
businesses for every tax preparer. That's if every preparer had their practice. They
don't. It’s easy to see why most small businesses wind up doing their bookkeeping and
tax returns. Most accounting firms don’t want to and don’t need to work with many of the
smallest of small businesses. More specifically, they basically ignored the 26,000,000
sole proprietors because they have the least amount of money for accounting fees and
require a lot of business training. It’s extremely hard for these businesses to find a good
accountant, let alone one that they can afford. With rates between $175-$350 an hour
for an independent tax accountant you can understand why so many choose the
do-it-yourself option, often getting themselves in a bind because of the next issue.

● Complexity of the system

The US tax system is extremely complex, even for the smallest businesses and the
simplest returns. Computer programs try to simplify the accounting and tax preparation
process but can not replace a knowledgeable accountant and tax preparer. Intuit
perpetrated one of the biggest frauds in history when they convinced small business
owners and individuals that they could save money by doing their bookkeeping with
QuickBooks and their own taxes with Turbo Tax. There are no statistics available but
having worked directly with thousands of small business owners I have yet to see a
good set of books or an accurate tax return done by individuals with little or no
experience. Intuit tried to turn spouses, receptionists, and small business owners
themselves into bookkeepers and tax preparers. It takes at least 5 years of experience
working under an accountant before anyone should be trying to do tax returns on their
own and that's working 40 hours per week. If Intuit was correct there would be no need
at all for professional tax preparers.

In an attempt to simplify this section I am going to provide a link to an authority on the

subject. https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/briefing-book/why-are-taxes-so-complicated

● The Government

In line with the link above I can say that over the forty-plus years I’ve spent as an
accountant the tax code has become more and more complex. Federal, state, and local
jurisdictions are always looking for money and creative ways to raise it. Most of the time
the burden falls on those that can least afford it, the small business owners. By creating
policies and procedures that make it almost impossible for any business to fully comply,
small business owners pay a much larger percentage of their revenue trying to stay out
of hot water, often paying higher taxes because they don’t have professional
representation while getting hit with a plethora of avoidable penalties and interest for
“non-compliance”.

The Time is NOW

These factors plus, having access to Philippine individuals that are highly talented,
willing to learn, grow and work hard has created what I like to call “The Perfect Storm of
Opportunity”. Not only for the people of the Philippines but for businesses and
accountants all over the world. Perhaps accounting and tax preparation is not such a
glamorous career in the eyes of a young person seeking something new and exciting.
Perhaps the education and experience requirements have made it even harder to
attract good accountants or maybe universities and educational institutions do not see
accounting as an attractive enough program to market to new students. Maybe it’s a
combination of all of the above. I know that when I was choosing a career accounting
was an attractive field of study. It was difficult to be accepted into an accounting
program and becoming a CPA required specialized experience and passing a very hard
exam. Regardless of the reason, today there is a high demand for accountants,
especially in the USA and that demand, along with the supply of individuals in the
Philippines has created.

● What You Can Gain

If you put your mind to it almost anything can be achieved. I highly recommend studying
2 publications that are part of your resources- “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace
Wattles and “Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I stress studying because merely
reading them will not be enough to truly understand the underlying message. I’m not
going to spoil your surprise nor can I. It would be easy for me to share my interpretation
of the writings but that’s not how I’ve come to understand how it works. You must realize
what makes people successful the same way I have.

What I can share with you is that it’s very simple and ever since I started applying the
principles everything started falling into place, without me realizing it. The biggest
lesson I have learned is that we always get what we ask for. If you're not clear about
what you want you will experience confusion and a lack of results. The second is that it

www.BedrockBusinessBuilders.com
takes time and patience. The third is that everything happens for a reason. These are
the lessons I’ve learned and may not be what you learn so just keep an open mind.

So the answer to what you will get by going through this program is entirely up to you. If
you want a better quality of life, independence, financial security, respect…… It’s all
yours if you want it and is willing to work for it. Nothing comes easily. Some examples
are as follows.

● Freelance

There are millions of businesses that are seeking workers. “The Great Resignation” has
created a shortage in available workers while utilizing technology has become more
acceptable and almost required for survival. If you want a job and an opportunity to work
from the comfort of your own home there are many opportunities to become a full-time
or part-time freelancer.

● Build your own business

If you're an entrepreneur and like the idea of creating opportunities for others there are
plenty of ways for you to accomplish this.

● Work from home and improve the quality of your life

Spending time and money going into work can be a thing of the past. This was one of
the major benefits I saw when initially seeing what I could accomplish with the
technology. I don’t enjoy driving to begin with and always viewed the commute as a
wasted opportunity to either learn or produce. Not only was I able to work from the
comfort of my place but I didn't skip a beat when I was traveling all those years. Truth
be told, I only worked about 15-20 hours a week in my accounting business for over 8
years. I could have grown the firm but would have never been able to create Bedrock. I
believe that what I have done can be done by anyone that has the desire.
