Updates

Updates to the OS and Server App are delivered via the App Store
Enable automatic updates if desired
System Preferences -> App Store
Manual updates are typically preferred for servers
Allows for proper testing of an update
Manual updates performed through App Store
Automatic updates can be manually approved/declined through the Software Update service
Basic Steps
1. Server App -> Advanced -> Software Update
2. Turn On
3. Set to manual approval
4. Select Updates tab
5. Gear -> Check for Updates
6. Wait...
7. Approve updates as desired
Use a Configuration Profile to point clients to the new update server
In this scenario, clients are your other servers
Upgrading from Mavericks or Mountain Lion
Update to Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite first
Then use the App Store to update server
Test updates on a non-production server first
When launching the new version of Server App it will walk you through the update process
Upgrade and migration from Mavericks or Mountain Lion
Backups

Traditional backup methods can be used


Server can be backed up with Time Machine
Performed just like a normal workstation backup
Can backup to more than one disk for off-site rotation
Note: Additional disks are excluded from the backup by default and should be enabled as needed
Service Data disk is included if separate
Note: Restoring a separate service data volume requires a few extra steps
Restoring OS X Server from a Time Machine backup
Service Data drive may need to be manually restored
cd /Volumes/<backup_disk>/Backups.backupdb/<hostname>/Latest/<startup_volume>/
tmutil restore -v ../<service_data_volume>/* /Volumes/<service_data_volume>
