Girl Scout Week Celebration 2016

Narrative Report

The month of September of every year is the significant month for Girl Scouting as
we celebrate the birth anniversary of our Founder, Josefa Llanes Escoda and the Girl Scout
Week.
This year ‘s weeklong celebration fell on September 18-24, 2016 and activities are
focussed on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight inequality
and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030.
To respond with this year’s celebration, Paliparan Elementary School conducted
scouting activities which enabled the scouts to show their concern for others, care for the
environment and respect for different gender perspectives.
Here are the activities undertaken during the GSP Week Celebration:

Day 1 – Family Day –“Building a strong family foundation character”

The scouts started their day with a wellness activity wherein they danced through the
music of “Ignite” – the Girl Scout Centennial Song. They also shared happiness with two
indigent families in the community by pretending that they were carolling. The families sang
Christmas songs with the scouts without realizing that they would be the one receiving
aguinaldos. The scouts surprised them with a bunch of grocery items and five kilos of rice.

Day 2 – Community Day – “Strengthening community partnership”

The scouts shared happiness with their community by stopping by the households and
singing with them. They also shared a meal with the community during the feeding program.
Also, the girls helped the community in cleaning the streets.

Day 3 – Escoda Day – “Commemorating the life of our great founder”

On the birthday of our founder, a Josefa Llanes Escoda Ceremony was held wherein
story-telling about her life, works, and heroic deeds. After the story telling, composition
activities such as poem, song, prayer and skits were conducted. Presentations of the outputs
were shown afterwards.

Day 4 – Girls Day – “Developing Girls self-assurance, self-expression and self-worth”

On the fourth day, a gender equality seminar was held to develop girls’ self assurance,
self expression and self worth. They were also had the chance to express themselves by
having a debate on how women had an equal right as men.
Day 5 – Environment Day – “Encouraging awareness and protection of the environment”

A community clean-up day was held on the Environment Day of the celebration. The
scouts went out of the community with their brooms and sacks and picked the pieces of
plastics and other recyclable materials littered on the street. They also made sure that the
streets were swept before they return to the school.

Day 6 – Troop Leader’s Day – “Thank You Teacher”

How could the Troop leaders or the teachers be happy? A simple card from the scouts
would really make their teachers happy. A card making activity was conducted so that the
scouts could thank their teachers for their hard work. They also had the chance to have a
photo shoot with their leader.

Day 7 – Partnership Day – “Building a long-lasting affiliation with partners”

On partnership day, resource persons from the community were invited to have a talk
about livelihood and taught the girls how to make different materials out of coconut palms.
The girls had a great time making brooms, weaving mats and baskets, making and toys such
as balls, wrist bracelets and shades.
