What is a Datum Target?
 Why datum target?

• Sand casting, forging, welding and many

mechanical procedures cause warpage and
irregularities in the parts 'surface. The entire
surface cannot be established as datum, in this
case datum target may be used to established
datum planes.

When we must use Datum Target?

1- when it is not possible or practical to use

an entire surface as a datum feature, we

use a part of it such as a point, a line or
an area on the surface as a datum.
 Other Reasons

• “Only a portion of the feature is used in

the function of the part.”

• “The designer suspects the part may rock

or wobble when the datum feature
contacts the datum feature simulator”
