Can Artificial Intelligence be used in improvising the Indian Justice System?

Summary of Arguments
1. Artificial Intelligence can be called as one of the landmark technological revolution of
21st century, capable of influencing almost all aspects of our life. National Strategy for
Artificial Intelligence (NSAI) released by NITI Aayog acknowledges the fact that AI can
bring tremendous changes in the field of Mobility, Healthcare, Agriculture, and
Education. Another area where AI can effectively be applied is in criminal justice
administration.
2. Criminal law’ and ‘technology’ have always been seen as mutually exclusive fields. The
field of criminal procedure law has been debating the potential for artificial intelligence
to be used in court.
3. The transition to a digital culture is bringing about significant changes not only in the
context of crime but also in the way investigations are conducted.
4. AI based technology can be effectively used to guide the investigation officers on
procedures of investigation.
5. There are several studies which have been conducted on the use of AI in criminal
procedures worldwide. Some of these studies show that AI gives significant chances to
ensure the legal system’s transparency, predictability, and standardization. Meanwhile
other studies show that AI also poses numerous concerns due to the limited software
capabilities available in the IT business

This blog discusses the role and implementation of AI in improvising the criminal justice system
in India.

Conclusion
Advances in Artificial Intelligence, technology and shifting demographics are redefining the
future of work, presenting both opportunities and challenges in the field of Criminal Justice
System. The future of Criminal Justice System will undoubtedly look and feel very different
from the one we have today. However, the crucial question is how rapidly justice agencies can
establish programs that enable improved experiences for victims, witnesses, and those attempting
to live lives free of crime. If utilized wisely and responsibly, AI can make a significant positive
change in the field of law and Criminal Justice System.
