Waitangi Day is the most important marker in New

Zealand's history.
It’s been celebrated since 1934 and celebrates the Treaty of
Waitangi, which promised to protect the Māori (the largest
indigenous people, living in New Zealand) and gave to the
Crown the right to govern New Zealand and to represent the
interests of all New Zealanders.
Celebrations include Māori ceremonies as well as sporting
events, music, and parades in the streets.
