Clinical Skills

There is no single "right" way to carry out a clinical skill. Variations in the style of interviewing and in
the sequence or technique of clinical examination are entirely acceptable within broad general
principles. Handouts are written with this in mind and, although essential information is provided in
handbooks, many students find it helpful to read textbooks. We would recommend the following
possibilities:

 Clinical Examination by N. Talley and S. O'Connor. 7th edition. Churchill Livingstone, 2014.
ISBN : 9780729541954

 Macleod's Clinical Examination by G. Douglas, F. Nicol, C. Robertson. 13th edition. Elsevier

Research and Critical Appraisal Skills

Research and Critical Appraisal Skills is a broad term incorporating research methods, medical
statistics, and epidemiology. The library has a range of textbooks for students of different abilities.
You are encouraged to access different texts to find those that suit your needs

Nonetheless, the following texts will probably be suitable for most students. In particular, the text by
Petrie and Sabine is recommended as the main text:

 Greenhalgh T. (2014). How to read a paper: The basics of evidence based medicine (fifth
edition). BMJ Publishing.

 Petrie A. & Sabin C. (2009). Medical Statistics at a Glance (third edition). Wiley-Blackwell.

 Peacock JL. & Peacock PJ. (2010). Oxford Handbook of Medical Statistics. OUP, Oxford.

The BMJ (www.bmj.com) has published a series of Statistics Endgames, a unique online learning
resource assessing applied knowledge in statistics, epidemiology, and research methods based on a
published article or case study from a clinical scenario. Answers to questions are provided with short
explanations. Students will find these questions invaluable for their studies and when preparing for
assessments. Most of these articles have been written by Philip Sedgwick, sub-theme Lead for
Research & Critical Appraisal Skills.

Chemical Chemistry

MBBS Reading List 2019-2020

• Eureka: Biochemistry & Metabolism Paperback, 31 Mar 2015 by Andrew Davison, Anna
Milan, Suzannah Phillips and Lakshminarayan Ranganath

• Clinical Chemistry – William Marshall, Marta Lapsley and Stephen Bangert 7th ed. Mosby
Ltd 2012 ISBN 9780723437031, 8th edition due for release in June 2016
William is a complete legend in clinical biochemistry – one of the best teachers of any
subject, with good but not too overextended explanations. Lots of good clinical scenarios.
Much of the course is based on this system of teaching, just because it works for most, but
try another book if you don’t get this one. If you read and understand this book, you will
never have another problem with clinical biochemistry!

• Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine – Martin Crook, 8th ed. CRC Press ISBN
9781444144147
A very clever book by a very clever guy. Lots of clinical cases, but a completely different way
of explaining concepts compared to the book above. You only need to understand each
concept in one book – once the principles click into place you’re laughing. Doesn’t matter
who explains it to you, but don’t waste too much time on a book that you don’t understand.
(Goes into some nice detail over inborn errors and genetics, but we don’t, so interesting but
not examinable in the clinical biochemistry part of the course.)

• Lecture Notes in Clinical Biochemistry – Walker Beckett,, Rae and Ashby, 9th ed Wiley
Blackwell ISBN 9781118272138
Good coverage of all topics involved in the course, but seems a little less personable
somehow. Lots of illustrations and still a good number of clinical cases.

• Medical Biochemistry – Baynes and Dominiczak, 4th ed. Saunders ISBN 9781455745807
Big and quite heavy, but lots of beautiful illustrations. Far too much detail for this course –
we aren’t trying to make you clinical biochemists! Almost unbeatable reference book.

• Clinical Biochemistry – An Illustrated Colour Text – Gaw, Murphy, Srivastava, Cowan,

O’Reilly
5th ed. Churchill Livingstone 2013 ISBN 9780802051791
Does exactly what it says on the tin! Lots of beautiful illustrations, many 2 x A4 page concise
explanations of subjects. Not really detailed enough to be used alone, but may help to
explain some concepts on a simpler level.
