Stone Age
How do we know that people made
music thousands of years ago?

Today, recorded music surrounds us.

You can buy CDs of your favorite
music. You can hear singers on the
radio. You can even watch them on
TV. Thousands of years from now,
people will know about our music
because we have made recordings of it.

Thousands of years ago, recording music was
impossible. So how do we know that people
long ago played music? Because scientists have
found flutes that are 9,000 years old! The flutes
were found in China, in the Yellow River Valley.
Here, scientists unearthed all sorts of treasures,
including 36 flutes.

The flutes were made from the wing
bones of a crane—a long-necked wading
bird. People long ago carved and shaped the
bones and put holes in them. Even more
surprising was that one flute could
still be played. “It [makes] a
reedy, pleasant sound, a little
thin, like a recorder,”
one scientist described.

The ancient flutes made a sound

like a modern recorder.

What Is Sound?
Sound is a kind of energy that you can hear. Sound
is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly
back and forth. When something vibrates, it
makes the air vibrate, too. Vibrating air carries
the sound you hear.

Thee Arr t of Recycling

An artist in Mexico makes tiny furniture from bottle
caps. Another artist in Liberia cuts up old flip-flop
sandals to create a toy helicopter. For hundreds of years,
people around the world have made artwork and toys
from trash. They still do. In some places, trash may be
the only material that artists and toymakers can afford.
Artists in the United States recycle, too. John This toy helicopter

Illinois. He is also an artist who thinks junk is great
for making art. He once made three giant dinosaur
sculptures out of chrome car bumpers. He called them
Chromosaurs. One of them was 18 feet tall!
Recycling can be a lot more than just tossing trash
into a bin. A work of art can be beautiful whether it’s
made with paint, clay, or even recycled trash.

The article said the parrot was an artist. Write a

The Painting Parrot

happened.
Suddenly the parrot started painting
really fast. It squawked, and I thought it
sounded like “Look!” So I looked. The parrot
had the paper in its beak. On it was a picture
of a green gorilla. I guess that parrot can
paint! And it can talk, too!
