Introduction
The Banjar tribe, also known as Urang Banjar, is an
Indonesian ethnic group originating from South
Kalimantan.
Today, they can be found in various regions including
East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, Jambi, Riau,

Traditions
The tribal culture has evolved over centuries through a
process of cultural blending, primarily influenced by the
introduction of Islamic beliefs brought by traders from
Persia and Arabia.

So, what special customs do the Banjar tribe

have?
1. Bausung Pengantin
This cherished Urang Banjar wedding tradition has been
passed down through generations. During this ceremony, as
the bride and groom prepare to walk down the aisle, they are
carried on the shoulders of two dancers known as Hanuman
and Hadrah. The journey to the aisle is accompanied by the
melodious sounds of Hadrah music, while the bride and
groom continue to recite prayers and receive well-wishes.

2. Bayuun Mulud Traditional Ceremony

Baayun Mulud is a Banjar tradition observed to commemorate the
birth of the Prophet Muhammad. In this ritual, infants or children
aged 0-5 years are gently swayed while Mawlid poems are
recited. Prior to commencing Baayun Mulud, families must
arrange three swings made from various fabrics. A religious
leader recites selawat (prayers) followed by all attendees, and the
child is swayed slowly until qiyam is recited. The ceremony
concludes with a prayer by the cleric, followed by a meal
prepared by the family.
3. Floating Market
The Banjar tribe has a time-honored trading tradition
known as the floating market. This involves the buying
and selling of essential goods like vegetables, fruits,
fish, and everyday necessities conducted on boats in
river waters.

4. Musik Panting
Musik Panting is characterized by a distinctive rhythm
created by a combination of musical instruments,
including the Panting (a type of small harp guitar), violin,
gongs, and baboons. This music is commonly used as an
accompaniment to traditional dances and Banjar songs.
5. Tanglong Ritual
The Tanglong Ritual is an integral
part of Banjarese culture observed
during the first night of Ramadan
and the night of takbiran. Lanterns
are illuminated on the inaugural
night of the holy month, and people
gather to pray throughout the village
until midnight, with some remaining
in observance until dawn breaks.
