Addition War

Materials: 1 deck of
Name: Addition War cards with kings,
Groupings: Pairs
Time: 10 minutes queens, jacks and
jokers removed per pair.

Game Aim: To be the player with the most cards


Aim: To build fluency using addition.
in their discard pile.

Instructions:

• Pair students and give them a deck of cards with the kings, queens, jacks, and jokers removed.

• Players deal the cards out evenly and hold their cards face down.

• On the count of three, students turn over 2 cards each so that all players can see.

• Players total both their cards by adding them together.

• The player with the highest total wins all 4 cards and adds them to their discard pile.

• The game continues until both students have run out of cards in their deck.

• Players count the number of cards in their discard pile, the player with the most cards in their
discard pile, wins!

Differentiation:

• Make the game harder by drawing more than two cards.

• Make the game harder by drawing two cards then adding another number on top.

• Students can multiply instead of adding their two cards to practise multiplication facts.
