Before reading the text …
Do you know of any boat races? The story you will read is
about a pirate ship race. There is an exciting start, a fight
between two ships and finally a winner! Read the story and
find out what happened.
READ IT!
After reading the text …
♦ Your story map
Create a story map to retell the main events in the story.
Start by drawing a picture of two islands on a big piece
of paper. Write the numbers 1 to 5 on the pictures so that
1 is at the beginning of the story and 5 at the finish.
Beside each number, write a few sentences about what
happened in the story.

After reading … Think and share with a partner.
Have you ever played a game where someone cheated so they
could win? How did you feel about that?
What did Captain Red Beard do to stop Norman winning the
race? Do you think this was fair? Why?

After reading the text, write …

♦ Illustrating a scene
Scan through the story again. Choose your favourite part
and make a drawing or painting of what happened. Then
write a few sentences to explain the scene.
♦ Design of a pirate ship
Make a model of a pirate ship. Look at the boats in the
story for ideas. Use boxes and construction materials
to make your model.
Give your ship a name. Make a sketch of your ship and
label some of its parts.
♦ Article about the race
Well done! You have been chosen to write an article about
the great race to go in “Pirate Newspaper”.
Start with a clever heading for your story. An example is:
Red Beard Cleans up Norman at the Race. Then explain
what happened in the race. Remember to write short,
sharp sentences to keep your readers interested.
Ask your teacher to photocopy a picture for you to include
