Activity 5
Read the story of PHINEAS GAGE and answer the following questions
1. What part of the brain did Phineas Gage damage?
The greater part of his left frontal lobe, a traumatic brain injury caused by an iron
rod that shot through his skull.
2. What does the case of Phineas Gage teach us about the brain?
Gage's remarkable narrative was one of the first to provide evidence that the
frontal lobe was involved in personality. Gage's case had a huge impact on early
neurology, helped scientists in gaining a better knowledge of the human brain
and the impact that injury might have on both function and behavior. The exact
alterations in his behavior related to growing notions concerning brain function
localization, or the assumption that various functions are connected with certain
parts of the brain.
3. What does the frontal lobe do?
The frontal lobe is the brain's most front component. It stretches from the region
beneath the brow to the precentral gyrus. The frontal lobe is in charge of higher
cognitive skills such as memory, emotions, impulse control, problem solving,
social interaction, and motor function as a whole.
