c State what ‘bit’ is short for.

(1 mark)
d Describe how bits are stored on your phone or laptop.

2 Here are some energy resources used to generate electricity.

a Look at the statements about growing demand for electricity.
 Write ‘P’ next to the statement if it is describing a problem.

 Write ‘S’ next to the statement if it could be part of the solution.

P or S

3 Light can travel down optical fibres even if the fibres are bent into curves or circles.
Describe in detail how this happens.

In this question you get marks for how well your answer is written.
You will get marks for:

 spelling

 grammar

 organising your ideas and information clearly

 using key scientific words.

4 Thermistors and light dependent resistors (LDRs) are examples of sensors.

a Explain what a sensor is.

(1 mark)
b Describe how you could use a thermistor to control the temperature in an incubator for
a baby in hospital.

(3 marks)

5 A teacher shows you images of different household appliances. Some are efficient and
some are not.
a Explain what is meant by efficiency.

(1 mark)
b Write down the equation for efficiency and use it to calculate the efficiency of a 1 kW
kettle that heats water with a power of 900 W.
(1 kW = 1000 W).

(3 marks)
c State what happens to the other 100 W.

Here is the data that she collected.

Resistance Resistance Resistance Mean

Distance (cm)
(k) (k) (k) resistance (k)

10 25 28 27

20 38 42 48

30 58 63 60

40 81 90 85

b Complete the table by calculating the mean for each distance. Round your calculations
to the nearest whole number. (2 mark)

c Explain how you know that there are no outliers in this set of data.

Rita draws a graph and writes a conclusion.

d State 2 things that Rita must include in her conclusion.

(2 marks)
e Use the spread of the data to state and explain how confident Rita can be in her
conclusion.

7 Here is some information that shows how the resources used to generate electricity
changed over 35 years.

Use the diagram above to answer these questions.

a Apart from ‘other’ state the resources that were used more in 2007 than in 1971.

(1 mark)
b Suggest a reason why the use of these resources increased.

(1 mark)
c State the resources that were used less in 2007 than in 1971.

(1 mark)
d Suggest a reason why the use of these resources decreased.

(1 mark)
e If the changes continue then one of the resources will not be used at all 20 years from
now. Suggest and explain which resource this will be.

8 A typical song that downloads onto your phone. It contains 3 MB. Your ring tone takes
about 3 kB to be stored.
1 MB = one million bytes 1 byte = 8 bits 1kB = one thousand bytes
a Calculate the total number of bits that you are storing for a song.

(2 marks)
b Calculate the total number of bits that you are storing for your ringtone.

(2 marks)

Download speeds are calculated in bits/s. A fast download speed is 30 Mbit/s.

In the past download speeds were 56 kbit/s.
The download speeds for songs has not changed very much even though download
speeds have increased dramatically.

c Use the information in the box to suggest and explain how the number of bytes used to
store songs has changed.
