LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Quarter 3 – Week 1
Editorial Writing

Background Information for Learners

Alito L. Malinao in his book, Journalism for Filipinos, quoted M. Lyle Spencer as
he defines editorial as “ an expression of fact and opinion in concise, logical, pleasing order
for the sake of entertaining, or influencing opinion, or policies in such a way that its
importance to the average reader will be clear.”

Further, an editorial is an article that states the concerted opinions or single stand of
the publication’s staff on a particular issue. Editorials are meant to influence public opinion,
promote critical thinking and sometimes cause people to take action on an issue. In essence,
an editorial is an opinionated news story.

Editorials are believed to be the heart and soul of the newspapers. Each and every
newspaper is incomplete without the editorial section.

Characteristics of an Editorial

1. It follows a pattern. An editorial is an essay like a feature story. This means that the
editorial article should bear an introduction, body and conclusion.

2. It simplifies an issue. An editorial is an objective explanation of the hottest issue, within

the coverage of the paper’s release. Hence, it usually simplifies the complex issues by
eliminating extraneous parts of the news. In other words, it puts the news in its proper
perspective.

3. It provides opinions from the opposing viewpoints. Although an editorial showcases a

stand of the paper, it attempts to be objective by presenting views that refute directly the
same issues the group addresses.

4. It shows evidence delivered in a professional and formal manner. Formality

encompasses the use of the language and the style of argumentation. Good editorials engage
issues, not personalities. Editorial writing is direct to the point and yields a serious one.

PRACTICE HYGIENE PROTOCOLS AT ALL TIMES

2

5. It offers alternative solutions. One prime function of editorials is to effectuate change

in others’ beliefs and stands. The editorial does this by offering a suggestion to remedy the
problem or issue being criticized.
6. It offers a solid and concise conclusion. It gives the readers an unforgettable punch they
can live by.

Functions of Editorial

1. Explain or interpret. Editors often use editorials to explain the way the newspaper
covered a sensitive or controversial subject. In a school setting, the publication may
explain new school rues or a particular student body effort like a fund-drive.

2. Criticize. Editorials constructively criticize actions, decisions or situations while

providing solutions to the problem identified. The purpose of doing so is to get readers
to see the problem, not the solution.

3. Persuade. An editorial primarily aims at driving the readers to crusade with the paper’s
stand. Hence, the paper’s task, being in the realm of journalism, is to encourage others
to take a specific positive action.

4. Praise. Editorials are also used to commend people and organizations for having
contributed something to champion progress, development and peace.

Editorial Structure
An editorial is similar to an essay that focuses on a specific issue or topic, offers a
thesis and provides evidence and supporting arguments to convince its readers.

1. Title. Clearly identifies the topic.

Ex. Covid-19’s remedy is with us

2. Introduction. It contains the issue or news peg and the reaction. An introduction comes
in different forms like a thought-provoking question, a quotation relevant to the subject, a
striking statement or narration of the event.
Ex. We have entered the sixth month of community quarantine, imposed at various levels
across the archipelago and still we are seeing the highest number of Covid-19 cases in
Southeast Asia.

PRACTICE HYGIENE PROTOCOLS AT ALL TIMES

3

3. Body. It presents the factual details to bolster the opinion or principle of the newspaper
on the given issue. Arguments here are arranged from the most significant to the least
significant ones.

Ex. As of September 20, 2020, the total number of infected persons in the country
has reached 286, 743, with the daily reported new cases averaging above 3, 000 this month.
While painfully recognizing that every single death is a tragedy for all, the one mitigating
note in the Philippines’s Covid situation is the relatively low death rate. As of September
20, the death toll stood at 4, 984. And yet, the danger is so real to the vulnerable populations
that businesses have had to tiptoe around imposing strict protocols sometimes revised at a
dizzying place as they try to reboot.

Blaming the government and concerned state institutions has become the favorite
pastime of many Filipinos on social media. People tend to look outward and put blame on
others, instead of focusing on what they can do on their own to help curb the spread of the
disease. Despite the consistent public calls of local and international government and health
agencies, some people still choose to ignore protocols in practicing the minimum health
standards. It has not helped that the safeguard deniers have clothed their defiance of
protocols with the apparent double standard certain powerful people were not sanctioned
for their own breaches of quarantine rules.

Beyond enforcement, we also must consider the violations as a reflection of the

nation’s health seeking behavior and attitude; nay, a combination of several factors, not least
of which is the overwhelming need of those impacted by lockdowns to go out and do
something, anything, to earn something to feed families forced into begging the past months.

Just recently, the Acting President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the
Philippines, Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, said that a more holistic approach to the response
to the pandemic should consider proactive promotion of a positive mindset that gives flesh
to the values of love, compassion, prudence and patience. This, most especially at a time
when many people are experiencing uncertainty with the unprecedented loss of lives, jobs
and economic slowdown. While some would probably question the relevance of the church
in the pandemic issue, recall that even Justice Secretary Menardo Jimenez acknowledged
the capability of the faith-based sector in helping Filipinos undergoing mental health and
psychosocila problems. “Pananagutan sa bawat isa(Looking out for each one),” David has
said, will give rise to the consciousness of accountability; that our actions, or inaction, will
affect other people. Every Filipino can help by channeling the spirit of bayanihan(concerted
effort and heroism) and our demonstration of malasakit(concern) to each human being. In
fact, these core values were actually communicated in a public service ad by Filipino
company Unilab with the tag line, “Malasakit ang kailangan upang Covid-19 ay mapigilan.”

PRACTICE HYGIENE PROTOCOLS AT ALL TIMES

4

4.Conclusion. It presents a solution, plea, advice, command, thought provoking question,

forecast possible effects and quotation relevant to the subject or just a summary.

Ex. We sink or swim in this country so we have no other choice but to move as one. And
we cannot simply pin all our hopes on the discovery of a vaccine that is supposed to
provide immunity. This is the best time to let the Filipino spirit take us through this
pandemic. As one Facebook post said, “Pandemic ka lang, Pilipino kami.”

Kinds of Editorial

1. Editorial of information. It presents only the information about a particular issue.

2. Editorial of interpretation. Its primary aim is to interpret or analyze the event, situation
or issue to present the facts in a more meaningful and enlightening perspective to the
reader.
3. Editorial of argumentation. It also gives information and interpret action. Its
difference, however, lies on the fact that it takes a stand on a controversial issue and gives
its reasons in a logical way to convince the reader to side with the newspaper principles.
4. Editorial of criticism. It is similar to editorial of argumentation., but this editorial tries
to present both sides of the issue or the pros and cons of the situation, though the newspaper
has its own side of the issue.
5. Editorial of persuasion. It aims to persuade readers to support a program of plan of
action by enumerating the advantages that could be gained.
6. Editorial of commendation. It usually commends, praises or pay tribute for the
achievements, successes of public figures like heroes, leaders and other celebrities.
7. Editorial of celebrating special occasions. It highlights the significance of celebrating
special occasions like Independence Day, All Saints Day, Christmas and New Year.

_____ 5. This editorial tackles topic such as a change in the grading system.

Activity 3. READ, UNDERSTAND AND GUESS ME!

Directions. Read the sample editorials below and identify their kind. Write your answers inside
the box.
1.
A Tale of Horror: Population Explosion

Today the Philippines has a population of 80 million. At the present rate of growth, this
small country, would only be most affected by the evil effect of population explosion. This
means that most of our high school students now, who would only be in their early 40’s or
50’s at that time, will be the ones to be most affected by the evil effect of population explosion.
As of today, our basic problems are food, water, housing, education and pollution. Just
imagined how these problems would be aggravated by the 150 million mouths to feed, backs
to clothe, heads to shelter and minds to educate.
The only way to avoid this situation would be through population planning.

2. A June 12 Thought: Respect Flag Rites

A flag ceremony, wherever it be a flag raising or a flag retreat is sacred. Therefore, it

should be observed with all the solemnity and sacredness a Filipino citizen can master.
The National Anthem, like the national flag, should be treated with ceremonial respect.
On this anniversary of the declaration of Independence in Kawit in 1898 it is perhaps timely
to remind all and to behave during our flag ceremonies.

PRACTICE HYGIENE PROTOCOLS AT ALL TIMES

6

Sad to say, many students during the Monday morning flag raising ceremonies, instead of
standing at attention while singing the National Anthem, and while reciting the Patriotic Pledge,
move around play and have completely disregarding what’s going on.
It is for this reasons that we are calling the attention of all teachers, especially the social
studies teachers to give more emphasis on teaching values, love of country, respect for the flag,
veneration of heroes, and proper behavior during flag ceremonies. If flag ceremonies cannot be
held properly, why then do we hold them at all.

3. Science not Conflict with Religion

Can Science be reconciled with religion?

There is no contradiction between Science and Religion when both are properly
understood; what is needed is a proper knowledge of religion and a more scholarly interpretation
of the Bible, the Koran and other similar books, for there can never be a contradiction between
any truth revealed by God in the holy scriptures and any findings of science, properly tested and
verified.
Holy Scriptures of whatever religion are not textbooks of science. Their purpose is all the
same-to inculcate moral, spiritual and religion truth. The subject matter of Science on the other
hand is the physical universe. Its purpose is to discover the law of nature. Religion and Science
move in the essentially different orbits.

4. Bayanihan: Filipino Cultural Heritage

The effectiveness of the “bayanihan” spirit was best shown by group of students, hundreds
of them, as they took to the streets in support of the Metro Manila clean-up and beautification
drive.
The bayanihan is an ancient Filipino custom, symbolic of the Filipino way of group work.
As found in the Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala(1745) by P. Juan de Noceda and P. Pedro de
Sccluar, the word bayanihan is derived from the rootword bayani meaning Obra comun or group
work.
Another related word, magpabayani, is a request for help by one who wants a job done for
him, and evoke response from neighbors who come in groups to offer their services in all forms

5.
New Year Thoughts

New year is the finale of the Yuletide Season which is accompanied by the spirit of joy
and goodwill that can only be understood, never fully explained. It is enough to feel the spirit of
it- that which illumines our souls- the spirit that transform into reality that Christmas message
“Peace on earth and to men of goodwill.”
New Year is an occasion and reason for showing the fine sentiments that we feel. It is the
time for renewal of friendships, for making bonds of kinship stronger and firmer.
New Years’ time is the most fitting time to bury all grudges. It is the time to forget all
wrongs suffered and all injuries received to let bygones be bygones.
This constitutes the real essence of the season. Love, the greatest and finest of man’s
sentiments must reign in all hearts.

Activity 4. I BELIEVE. Write an editorial article about our frontliners using praise as one
function of editorials.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Quarter 3 – Week 2
Feature Writing

Background Information for Learners

Feature
Among all journalism writings, feature is the most varied in scope, treatment
and purpose. As opposed to news stories, features are generally believed to be more
creative in orientation. Hence, it can be written in many forms and styles and can
cover many subjects. It also gives background information on certain prominent
events or personality in the news. Consequently, it includes literary devices like
color, wit, humor, dialogue, anecdotes and emotive words to capture human
interest.

Qualities of a Good Feature

➢ Creativity – from the most ordinary or common things to the bizarre or
most unimaginable subjects. A feature story can take any topic under the
sun.
➢ Human Interest – entertaining, inputs writers’ own thoughts and emotions.
- explores different points of views
- it gets into the lives of people
➢ Variety of Tones – Since feature stories are meant to entertain other than
to inform, the feature writer may use variety of dramatic tone, say a creepy
story, exciting narration, suspensive drama, angry letter, morbid experience
and the like.
➢ Variety of Form and Style – Feature stories may use any form and any
style depending on the writer’s judicious judgment to capture easily the
reader’s attention. One may use acrostic or literary techniques in crafting
stories, so long as the content is factual.
➢ Factual Content – it informs the readers of the situation, event or aspect of
life which might not have covered by hard news
- it explains, informs, and supplements the news

PRACTICE HYGIENE PROTOCOLS AT ALL TIMES

13

➢ Entirety – Feature stories are read in their entirety, so the writer can place the
highest point of interest at the end unlike the news.
➢ Organization – features apply the principles of creative writing to achieve
unity, coherence and emphasis.
- sentences may be longer allowing the use of colorful phrases and figurative
language
➢ Entertainment Value – it breaks the monotony and morbidity of war, murder,
rape, scandal, controversy, and corruption that fill the news page.
- Feature articles add color, life and zest of our publication.
➢ Timeliness/Imperishability – Feature stories can go on for weeks or months
without losing their usefulness unlike news stories which get stale as soon as
they are told.

Structure of a Good Feature

➢ The Lead – It should attract outright the attention of the readers that their
interest immediately drawn so they will decide to read on.
Kinds of Lead
a. Question Lead – Asking the readers a question, the answer to which is
found in the story.

d. Descriptive Lead – Gives a vivid description of a person, place or situation
so that the reader creates a mental picture of it.
Ex: Non-stop beating of drums. 24-hour week-long street dancing. Soot-
stained faces, arms and legs, Colorful costumes. The shouts of “Hala Bira”
and “Viva!”
e. Striking Statement – A short snappy statement set off in a paragraph by
itself.
Ex: The boat people are here to stay.
f. Contrast Lead – This lead points out the opposite and extremes. It should
be sharp and witty.

razed squatter’s area in Tondo, Saturday night.

PRACTICE HYGIENE PROTOCOLS AT ALL TIMES

14

g. Narration Lead – This lead is written in the form of narration.

- A central idea or theme must be carried all throughout the story.
➢ The Conclusion – Make sure your conclusion has impact
- How? By giving a condensed summary or state the salient points in the story. By
giving the highest point of interest of the most important fact in the feature.
- Use your imagination. Be sure you come up with something for the readers to
remember.
- The end can be…

Quarter 2 – Week 3
Kinds of Feature Story

Background Information for Learners

Kinds of Feature Story

1. Personality Sketch
➢ It offers a semi-biographical account of a newsworthy person. The
information usually comes from interview with successful people or
celebrity. Feature writers should prepare questions that will shed light on
the individual life.
From Zero to Hero

Manny Pacquiao, known as “Pacman” to his countrymen, has become a man of

inspiration to everybody – children and adult like. Now becoming a world icon, Manny is
admired because of his “never-say-die” spirit and his humility and extreme passion for
sports spurred by his determination to bring honor to is country.
The 26-year old boxing pro has already taken a long leap from where he came
from. With his present social status, who could ever think that this man of honor was a
high school dropout? Who could ever imagine the idea that Manny was dropout was a
doughnut and pandesal vendor then?
He began his career at the age of 14, migrating to Manila from the South with no
possessions to his name, neither money nor friends – but still bearing a goal he was
determined to achieve: to become a world champion.
Supporting himself as a construction worker, he gained local recognition quickly
on the amateur and pro-boxing circuit as a powerful puncher with little discipline and less
fear.
He made his debut at the age of 16.
The destined champ won a world flyweight title when he was just 19 in 1998, just
two weeks before his birthday. He held the IBF Junior Featherweight World title from June
2001, but it wasn’t until manager Nazario hooked him up with Freddie Roach, a respected
boxing trainer in Los Angeles, that Manny began to reach his potentials.
Roach took Manny’s natural aggressiveness and fearlessness and combined them
with defense and discipline. With these newly molded personalities, Manny went
undefeated over the next two years, earning decisive victories in each of his fights before
the Barrera bout, aside from one contested draw.

2. Travelogue
➢ It describes a place and the kind of people the writer met during his travel.
I’ve been there

Up, up, up went the elevator as we climbed the World Trade Center in the 25th
Street, New York City. The building made of aluminum and thick glass windows with
114 stories was extremely high.
Halt! The elevator stopped on the hundredth tenth floor. Slowly, my family and
I went out. The sight was so beautiful. You can see far-off buildings and towers that
seem to race up to the sky. The cars and people were very small like insects. From there,
I saw how busy the people of New York were. Busy cars were on the streets. That time,
there were no heavy traffic and officious people were trotting everywhere.
High-tech machineries were inside the tower. There was this computer, where
you can choose any language you want. Through this, you can explore New York
without working.
We went higher to the top floor through the escalator and wowed everything’s
so little up there. The air was so cold! I really enjoyed the whole scenery up there.
But now…it only remains in my memory. The feeling of nervousness and
happiness on a tall building is now only enclosed in a picture. However, it is relieving to
think that before it was destroyed, I had been there!

3. Personal Experience
➢ It deals with any unusual experience, usually written in the first person.
My 2019 UCAT Experience

The UCAT exam was a pretty big deal for me. I want to be an orthodontic
surgeon, so I knew I needed to ace this. So, here’s my experience of taking the 2019
UCAT.
With one day left to go, I felt a bit anxious and the nerves were kicking in. I set
aside Sunday to revise and do practice questions. I chose the first day available (Monday)

Perhaps it was my exam stress, but time was passing by so quickly! I was
starting to feel nervous about tomorrow and I knew I wasn’t thinking as clearly as I
would have hoped! Abstract reasoning is the section that I always struggled with. And I
did worse that I’d expected in my practice exam! So, after I finished the practice exam,
I knew I had to brush up on my abstract reasoning. I did some quiz questions and read
my theory notes and examples. This helped me remember the most common pattern s in
Abstract reasoning.
After weeks of preparation. It was finally the day of the exam. I was checked to
make sure that I had nothing in my pockets. They were friendly about it which made it
feel less intimidating. After that, I was given a laminated note board and a pen. I asked
extra pieces of note board before my exam to save time!
I headed into the exam room to my assignment computer. There were 16
computers set up in the room, with around 9 candidates already taking the exam. As I
expected, the timing was extremely tight and I only had time to spare in Situational
Judgement.
Overall, I was happy that I kept pace during most of the exam and managed to
answer all of the questions in 4 of the 5 sections, even if I had to guesstimate some of
the more difficult ones.
If you are sitting the UCAT exam, good luck!

4. Informative feature
➢ It emphasizes the giving of information with the element of human interest.
It is usually taken from interview or from research materials, such as drug
problems, streets children, victims of calamities and other current issues. It
may also deal with scientific facts presented in non-technical language, or
some interesting or useful facts in other areas.

Side Effects of COVID-19 Vaccines

Vaccines are designed to give you immunity without the dangers of getting the
disease. It’s common to experience some mild-to-moderate side effects when receiving
vaccinations. This is because your immune system is instructing your body to react in
certain ways: it increases blood flow so more immune cells can circulate, and it raises
your body temperature in order to kill the virus.
Reported side effects of COVID-19 vaccines have mostly been mild to moderate
and have lasted no longer than a few days. Typical side effects include pain at the
injection site, fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills and diarrhea. The chances of
any of these side effects occurring after vaccination differ according to the specific
vaccine.

PRACTICE HYGIENE PROTOCOLS AT ALL TIMES

24

COVID-19 vaccines protect against the SARS-CoV-2 virus only, so it’s still important
to keep yourself healthy and well.
Upon receiving the vaccine, a person should be requested to stay for 15–30
minutes at the vaccination site so health workers are available in case of any immediate
reactions. Individuals should alert their local health providers following vaccination if
they experience any unexpected side effects or other health events – such as side effects
lasting more than three days. Less common side effects reported for some COVID-19
vaccines have included severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis; however, this
reaction is extremely rare.
National authorities and international bodies, including WHO, are closely
monitoring for any unexpected side effects following COVID-19 vaccine use.
There have been concerns about COVID-19 vaccines making people sick with
COVID-19. But none of the approved vaccines contain the live virus that causes
COVID-19, which means that COVID-19 vaccines cannot make you sick with
COVID-19.
After vaccination, it usually takes a few weeks for the body to build immunity
against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. So, it’s possible a person could
be infected with SARS-CoV-2 just before or after vaccination and still get sick with
COVID-19. This is because the vaccine has not yet had enough time to provide
protection.
Experiencing side effects after getting vaccinated means the vaccine is
working and your immune system is responding as it should. Vaccines are safe, and
getting vaccinated will help protect you against COVID-19.

CNHS clouds SPUP; defends title, 3-0

Cagayan National High School (CNHS) shaded its all-time nemesis St. Paul
University (SPUP) and defended its title, 3-0, in the Tuguegarao City Meet Men’s
volleyball finals today at the People gymnasium, Tuguegarao City.

CAVRAA veteran Kaniel Jude De Leon led his team with 12 kills and 5 ace
services to take the three straight sets in a glaring statistics.

“My teammates expect much from me, but I keep telling them that we are a
team,” explained De Leon who delivered the winning spike in the last set of the
game.

SPUP had a good start scoring the first 5 points in the first set courtesy of Czar
Magleo but failed to sustain it when CNHS got the momentum with De Leon who
spurrred his team during the first time out and continued to give the SPUP their
first set loss, 21-18.

SPUP’s Magleo started strong in the second set but a knee injury of their setter,
Mico Narag slowed them down giving the second set to the defending champion,
16-21.

CNHS continued their rampage and never gave the SPUP a chance to gain the
upperhand as De Leon and Dioneter King Meflores gave them a combined 14 ace
services to take the title, 21-14.

and secure the last quarterfinal slot in the TCAA girls basketball elimination
round, at the Peoples Gymnasium, Tuguegarao City, this morning.

b. Star player / hero of the game
c. Writer’s record of the background of the athletes and coaches
d. Observation of the audience / viewers reaction of the game

Example:

CAVRAA veteran Candaroma who posted 35 points, 6 rebounds and 4

steals combined with Antonette Turo’s 15 points fuelled USLT’s bid for the
quarterfinals slot to join, Cagayan National High School, University of
Cagayan Valley and John Wesley College in the semi-finals starting
tomorrow.

USLT, despite their slow start, managed to turn the tides to their favor
after Coach Janet Millare called for the much needed time-out in the second
half to reorient her players.

“I was a bit disappointed with the way our team started and I knew
something needs to be done, so I called a time-out,” explained coach
Millare.

SPUP led by their twin towers, Thelma Costales and Lorena Catillejo
started strong with a 15-point lead at the end of the first half, 65-50, but
showed complacency in their defense giving 5 turnovers all converted to solid
10 points, bringing the lead down to 5.

The crowd, mostly Louisians headed by the University VP for Finance

Celso Tuddao, went hot and wild, despite the cold January breeze, when Turo
squeezed in the shaded area only to pass the ball out to Candaroma who
freely took a buzzer-beating 3-pointer and survive the elimination round.

Analysis:
Most crucial part – buzzer beater 3-point, 5 turnovers
Star Players – Candaroma and Tappa
Background of player – CAVRAA veteran
Audience – mostly Louisians and they went wild

Activity 5: Possible Answer

TNECS outplays TECS; defends crown

Tuguegarao Northeast Central School (TNECS) blasted Tuguegarao East

Central School (TECS), 3-1, and defended their last year’s title in the Milo
Volleyball Boys Finals at the Peoples Gym, Tuguegarao City last May 3.

TECS started strong with Sean Lucero’s 3 consecutive spikes fueling their
campaign but TNECS caught up when CAVRAA player, Miguel Narag came in
demolishing TECS’ defense with the tricky placements and went on to get the
first set victory, 15-12.

TECS hoping to retaliate, started early with Shane Tungcul spurring others
with his massive spikes giving no chance for TNECS to take the lead and
finished set 2 with a 15-13 victory.

TNECS was a bit rattled but they changed their strategy and blew the defense
of TECS with their quick sets taking the 3rd set on their side, 15-11.

In the 4th set, TECS tried to outplay TNECS but Tungcul sprained his ankle,
did not play half through the game and came back only to find out it was too late
because TNECS rallied behind Narag’s massive kills and finished the match with
15-11.

“We took advantage of the absence of their power blocker Shane, that’s
where we upped our game,” bragged Ralph Ventura, TNECS coach.

“Shane’s injury was a blow to our team but my boys did well, I am proud of
them,” assured Jackelyn Lacambra, TECS coach.

With this win, TNECS received 20K pesos while TECS settled with 10K as
their prizes.
