1.2. System Description

The PrimeLog range consists of data loggers with one to four input channels,
with several enclosure styles and various options for powering. The range of
loggers and the facilities provided by each type are shown in the tables in the
previous section, and are described in more detail below.

All logger types are optionally available with an integral PSTN modem for remote
programming and data collection.

PrimeLog (Model 2)

Local communication is by serial connection to a PC or a hand-held Psion

Workabout, which provides a local display for real time measurement as well as
inspection of recorded values.

4 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeLog

Comprehensive software support is provided by the PC-based PrimeWare host

application. This is a multi -tasking system, running under Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows 2000 or Windows NT, which handles both local and
remote loggers simultaneously. PrimeWare incorporates advanced graphing
and reporting using Wizards, simplifying greatly the presentation of data. The
user interface is fully GUI-compliant, providing full drag-and-drop facilities and
dockable toolbars.

1.2.1. Submersible loggers

Submersible loggers are available with one to four input channels. One and two
channel models are available with an internal pressure transducer.

PrimeLog with integral modem (Model 2M)

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 5

PrimeLog

Submersible loggers are powered by an internal battery with a design life of five
years or more, depending on the nature of use. However, it should be noted that
battery life will be affected significantly by temperature. If the unit is operated
continually above 30°C or below 0°C then battery life will be reduced. All models
have the option of an internal PSTN modem powered by an additional internal
battery. (The case of such loggers is lengthened to accommodate the extra
cells.)

These loggers are fitted with military-grade connectors and are sealed to IP68.

1.2.1.1. Auxiliary battery unit

An auxiliary battery unit containing 6 C-size alkaline cells is available to supply
additional power to digital sensors with heavy current demands. When such a
sensor is selected for a submersible logger (using Logger Setup and the
Digital tab options – see section 2.5.1.4), a warning message is displayed to
advise the user of the need to use the unit. The disposable pack is fully
encapsulated to meet IP68 and connects to the logger through the Comms
connector.

Because of the connection method, the auxiliary battery pack is connected to the
logger after programming and has to be disconnected temporarily when
communicating with the logger. This will result in the logger not recording data
from the digital sensor during periods of disconnection.

All battery voltages may be monitored continually and alarms generated if any
voltage falls below the preset threshold – see section 2.4.7.

1.2.1.2. Auxiliary Battery/Communications adaptor

If it is necessary that logging continues during communication periods, an
adaptor is available which allows the battery pack to be connected continuously
whilst providing access to the comms connector.

1.3. Additional features

This manual has been produced to provide information on as many standard
features as possible, but not all configurations can be foreseen nor all uses
anticipated.

PrimeLog

1.4. Hardware Connections

1.4.1. Sealing
The connectors fitted to submersible PrimeLogs are waterproof only when
mated with a matching connector, or when the captive sealing cap is fitted.

For continued full environmental performance it is essential that the sealing

caps are fitted unless the connector is i n use.

Sensors supplied by Primayer are factory-fitted with sealed matching

connectors. Connectors fit with a bayonet (twist-and-click) action of the rotating
shell.

Connectors will only seal correctly if dirt is excluded from the mating faces.
Logger sensors operate at low levels of current, consequently any penetration of
moisture is likely to cause electrical leakage causing degradation or destruction
of data. Contaminated connectors may be cleaned by scrubbing with a brush
using industrial alcohol (m ethylated spirits).

It is good practice when connections are made to ensure that the sealing caps
are also mated to each other. This prevents dirt and moisture accumulating in
the cap and so being transferred to the connector.

1.4.2. Polarisation
All PrimeLog connectors are polarised, such that it is impossible to connect the
wrong input.

1.4.3. Submersible PrimeLog Input Connections

Submersible loggers have their connectors identified by logos, which are shown
against the appropriate input below.

IMPORTANT: Due to the operational requirements of depth transducers it is

essential that the connector is never immersed in or exposed to water. The vent
tube from the transducer sensor is terminated at the connector and must be
open to atmosphere to sense pressure in vented gauge mode. If water is
8 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual
PrimeLog

allowed to enter the vent tube then the operation of the sensor may be impaired
or irreparably damaged. This damage is not covered by any warranty.

1.4.3.1. Digital Inputs

Commonly it is only necessary to connect the sensor correctly, as the logger
provides the necessary power. Sensors which require to be powered by an
external power source are discussed in the chapter on Interfacing.

If the logger starts before the sensor is connected, no malfunction will occur but
the data up to the time when the sensor was connected will be zero values.

1.4.3.2. Internal Pressure Transducer (no logo)

Loggers fitted with an internal pressure transducer have a male quick-release
connector mounted on the logger end cap.

The integral pressure transducer is available in a wide range of sensitivities,

from 3 bar to 20 bar. Damage may occur if the transducer is subjected to
pressures of more than 150% of its range. The zero point calibration of the
transducer may change if the logger is subjected to shocks, but this offset can
be compensated by calibrating the logger.

A hose with male and female connectors is available to connect the logger to the
pressure m onitoring point.

Care must be taken to avoid pressure shock when connecting to the transducer,
as this can damage or destroy the sensing diaphragm.

1.4.3.3. Analogue Inputs

Analogue inputs are of two types - general purpose and dedicated integral
pressure transducer.

General analogue inputs may be voltage or current.

Voltage input range is nominally 0 - 21V DC. Voltages outside this range require
a special cable; standard voltage ranges available are 0 - 5V and 0 - 10V.

Current input requires a special cable. This is suitable for 0 - 10mA, 0 - 20mA
and 4 - 20mA ranges.

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 9

PrimeLog

If the logger starts before the sensor is connected, no malfunction will occur but
the data up to the time when the sensor was connected will be zero values.

1.4.3.4. Communication Link

The communication link is a cable which interfaces directly to a PC serial port
or to a Psion Workabout. Communication is at standard RS-232C levels.
Loggers must be configured by PC or Workabout before use.

The communications socket on submersible loggers is used also for

connection of the Auxiliary Battery Unit.

1.4.3.5. Modem Connection

The modem connection is a direct lead between the logger and the external
PSTN linebox.

10 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeLog

1.5. Installation and Use

Installation of the logger is principally a matter of connecting the cables for the
inputs, and for the modem if fitted.

Sensors supplied by Primayer are factory-fitted with the appropriate connector.

1.5.1. Logger Set Up

The logger is setup by running the support software, or by downloading
programming data from the Psion Workabout.

Refer to the PrimeWare section or to the Workabout User section, as

appropriate.

1.5.1.1. PrimeWare Host Software

The use of this application is covered in detail in the PrimeWare see section 2.

1.5.1.2. Psion Workabout Data Transport

The use of this instrument is described in the Psion Workabout see section 0.

1.5.2. Logger Use

No routine action is required when the logger is in use. Data may be
downloaded at any time without interrupting the recording of data, either by local
connection or by modem if fitted.

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 11

PrimeLog

1.6. Interfacing

1.6.1. Quadrina Insertion Meters

Quadrina insertion meters are probes which are inserted, usually on a
temporary basis, into mains supply pipes, and which measure the local velocity.

1.6.1.1. The Quadrina range

Probes are supplied in two sizes: standard (Probeflo) and miniature (Miniprobe).
Each is available for unidirectional or bi-directional flow. As two options are
available for the insertion tube, there are eight hardware variants. Any variant
may be fitted with the MEP or QEP electronic interface.

The QEP interface requires no power from the logger and so is compatible with
all PrimeLog instruments. Its pulse frequency is linear against velocity

The MEP interface normally requires power from the logger. The PrimeLog
submersible range requires an Auxiliary Battery Unit to be used. The MEP output
pulse frequency is non-linear.

If the MEP interface has been specified to be powered internally, PrimeLogs can
be interfaced directly without auxiliary batteries.

1.6.1.2. Volumetric flow measurement

Volumetric flow must be calculated from the measurement of velocity at one
point in this flow. It is common practice (which will be assumed here) for the
measurement point to be set on the centreline of the pipe, and to assume that
flow is symmetrical about this point. There is the additional complication that the
probe forms an obstruction to the flow (blockage factor).

Happily, these problems are minimised by the probe manufacturer, who

supplies tables (F factors) which give the ratio of mean velocity to (measured)
centreline velocity allowing for the blockage of the probe in common sizes of
pipe.

12 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeLog

1.6.1.3. Probe calibration

Each probe is supplied with a calibration certificate showing the number of
pulses produced per metre of flow. (If this value seem s peculiar, consider
“...number of pulses produced per second for each metre per second of flow
rate...” - the two figures are identical).

Probes fitted with QEP interfaces have a single-point calibration. For the non-
linear MEP interfaces, calibration figures are supplied for several different
velocities. From these values a mean factor is also calculated, which is
convenient to use but which does introduce some error.

1.6.1.4. Logger Configuration

When the option Quadrina Insertion Probe is selected from the PrimeWare
flowmeter menu, the following information is required:

Probeflo (default) or Miniprobe

Unidirectional (default) or bi-directional
Standard (0.5”) or oversize (0.75”) insertion tube
Pipe diameter
MEP or QEP electronic interface

If MEP interface is selected, then there is a choice of either single point or

multiple point calibration. For multi-point calibration, the given values or rate
(metres/second) and corresponding output frequencies (Hz) must be entered
from the calibration certificate.

For both interfaces, single point calibration is simply entering the value given on
the calibration certificate.

PrimeWare automatically sets up the logger to calculate the flow rate in litres per
second.

1.6.2. Other Flowmeters

Interfacing the PrimeLog instruments to other flowmeter sensors requires
knowledge of the powering requirements of these sensors. The following table

PrimeWare

2.PRIMEWARE
This chapter documents the features and use of Prim eWare.

2.1. Introduction

2.1.1. Overview of PrimeWare

PrimeWare is the PC-based support system for the PrimeLog family of data
logging instruments. Programming and data recovery is supported by direct
connection, remotely by modem, or through the Psion Workabout data transport.

PrimeWare is 32-bit multi-tasking software running under Windows 95,

Windows 98, Windows 2000 or Windows NT, exploiting the facilities of these
multi-tasking environments. Multi-tasking enables PrimeWare to perform
communication tasks in the background whilst other applications are active.
Accordingly, in telemetry applications PrimeWare should be left running
continuously to monitor and record Alarm dial-ins from outstations.

The application provides wizards which assist the operator by leading through
such tasks as logger programming and generating data presentations using the
powerful graphing and tabular reporting capabilities.

Dockable toolbars are provided for rapid selection of commonly-used functions

with a single mouse click.

2.1.2. Survey and Database modes

PrimeWare software has two main modes: Survey mode and Database mode.
In Database mode collected data is stored in a versatile database using an
industry-standard DBASE IV file structure, Survey mode allows data to be easily
collected from a number of loggers and saved in a standard WINS or SLI text file
format (CSV). Both formats allow the data to be used with a variety of standard
software packages for further analysis and presentation.

Database mode is mainly used where a number of loggers are installed in fixed
locations to monitor a network. Survery mode is mainly used where a number of
PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 17
PrimeWare

loggers are similarly programmed (with different location information) for the
monitoring of a network for survey purposes.

2.1.3. PC Hardware and Software Requirements

The following equipment specification represents the minimum host
specification for PrimeWare:

• 486 (but Pentium recommended) with 16MB RAM and Windows 95/98,
Windows 2000 or Windows NT V4.0
• 6MB available hard disk space

As with any application, the higher the specification of the host system, the better
PrimeWare will operate.

Note that Primayer cannot support technical enquiries relating to, or caused by
problems with, the operating system (e.g. Windows 95) installed on any host.

PrimeWare

2.2. Installation
It is assumed that the host system already has the operating system and any
peripheral devices correctly configured; in particular, as detailed below, any
modems must be installed before PrimeWare is installed.

Ensure that the host system meets the minimum requirements, as described in
the previous section.

If a previous version of PrimeWare is already installed on the host, installing the

current version into the same directory will not affect the data files. However, if
the previous version is PrimeWare V1.6 or earlier, the personal preferences will
not be retained and so will require to be set again.

2.2.1. Installation process

CAUTION: Ensure that no other applications are running during the install
procedure. If necessary, close any such applications manually.

PrimeWare installs directly from the diskette pack or CD-ROM supplied.

It is recommended that the default directory names are used wherever possible.
Once the directory names are selected, installation is simply a matter of
changing diskettes when prompted.

Once installed, PrimeWare is run from the Program menu. If desired, an icon for
PrimeWare may be placed on the desktop using the standard Windows
methods.

2.2.1.1. Installation from diskettes

Insert Diskette 1, click on Start, then Run. Type a:\setup.exe and hit Enter. The
installation process will start. (Alternatively, when the Run window appears, click
on Browse, then select 3½Floppy [A:] , then select Setup.exe and click on OK.)
This loads the Setup Wizard which then installs the software.

PrimeWare

2.2.1.2. Installation from CD

The CD ROM has an autoplay feature that should automatically start the CD
information screen where information and software load menu options are
available. If the CD does not start, using the windows menu bar, select Start,
Run and enter cdfront.exe using the appropriate drive letter for your CD-drive.
You can also start the CD software using the windows browser, navigating to
cdfront.exe on the CD and double clicking.

2.2.2. Installation of Modem

For telemetry applications, PrimeWare requires that a modem is installed.

When using Windows, in most cases the “Plug-and-Play” capability will ensure
that the modem is automatically recognised and configured, but sometimes the
installation and configuration must be performed by hand. As these operations
are outside the scope of this manual, please refer to the “modems, setting up”
section of the Windows help system for a guide to the procedure.

NOTE: PrimeWare will operate in local communications mode (i.e. with loggers
connected directly to the PC) without a modem being installed on the PC. If
desired, a modem can subsequently be installed, whereupon PrimeWare will
communicate with remote dataloggers equipped for telemetry.

screen. It is assumed throughout the following description that Toolbar and
Status options are both selected. However, either or both of these displays may
be inhibited if desired by clicking on the display name to uncheck it.

2.3.1. Overview of Use

Immediately following installation PrimeWare should be configured for use on
the particular host system, using the Tools menu selections. In particular, it is
essential that the General parameters are set to allow communication with
PrimeLog dataloggers and to store data in the correct location. This is described
in section 2.4.1

The next stage of operation is to configure PrimeLog equipment for use. This is
described in sections 2.5.1 and 2.5.2

Once the dataloggers are in operation and have acquired data, it is necessary to
retrieve these data. This is described in sections 2.5.3 and 2.5.4

Once recovered, data may be displayed and printed in a variety of formats. This
is described in section 2.6

2.3.2. Main Toolbar

The main tool bar provides easy access to the main software fu nctions, there
are two main toolbars, one for Database mode and one for Survey mode (the
mode is selected from the tools, options menu. The toolbars are similar, both
are detailed below.

The toolbar is “dockable”, namely it may be dragged anywhere on the screen,

and may be re-dimensioned as required. (For example, it may be changed to a
vertical layout on the right side of the screen.)

The status bar, located at the foot of the window, displays context-sensitive
descriptions, messages and other useful information. When, for example, a
menu is accessed, descriptions of the function of the various menu items are
displayed as the cursor is positioned on each item.

2.4. Tools
2.4.1. Options
There are two modes of operation, these are Database mode (see section
2.4.2) and Survey mode (see section 2.4.3). The mode required is set on the
Options, General dialog window, different options are available for each mode,
these are detailed in the appropriate section. The Survey mode allows more
flexible data monitoring for network analysis and similar operations.

2.4.1.1. Database mode

The General dialog window allows the default settings to be changed. It is

essential that the Database path and the default COM port are set correctly, as
these control the storage of data and communications with dataloggers.

30 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

Options - General settings

The Database Path is the location where data files retrieved from
PrimeLog dataloggers are stored. When first setup, this is the default
storage location but this may be changed if desired or if a new
database has been created, as described in section 2.7.1 Databases
may be located using the Browse button, which displays the contents of
directories.

The default COM port defaults to Port 1, but may be set as required by
clicking on the appropriate selection. The port is that used for direct
communication with the datalogger; it is NOT the modem port.

If a modem is installed, it is displayed in the Default Modem window. If

more than one modem is installed, select the appropriate modem by
clicking on the name. If communication is principally by modem, select
Modem as the default communications medium. This will ensure that
the correct communication system is automatically selected for
programming or retrieving data from loggers.

The Receive Alarm Calls checkbox allows PrimeWare to control the

modem to respond to incoming calls. This allows telemetry
PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 31
PrimeWare

dataloggers to report alarm conditions, as described in section 2.5.1.5

The Audio warning on receipt of alarm call allows the operator to be
notified when the system receives an alarm call in the background.

Set Psion default comms port defines the port used when
communicating with a Psion Workabout (see section 0).

Include the legend on graph printouts controls what is printed on a

graph.

The Graph tab allows the trace colours, the graph and Y-axes titles and the font
to be changed, and allows the graticule to be displayed.

To select a colour for a trace or for the graph background, click the
desired colour square and drag it to the trace or background.

The information entered for the graph and Y-axes titles is reproduced
on every graph. This information may also be changed from within the
graph wizard, as described in section 2.6.1.1

The Select Graph Font button opens a standard Windows dialog box to
select the font, style and colour. The text size is selected automatically
to suit the data being displayed. The Select Save Directory allows the
location of saved data files to be specified.

The Y-Axis 1 and Y-Axis 2 Setup buttons are used to set the scaling for
these axes.

When the Graticule is enabled, the Y1 and Y2 buttons reference the

graticule to that particular axis, and so set the graticule scaling.

The Report tab allows the report title and font to be selected, in the same
manner as described above for the Graph.

The Report Legend Aliases are alternative designations for the

columns of the report. An alias is five characters.

The Export tab allows the selection of the file format, path for export file and file
name for data to be exported.

Options – Export tab

Two types of export file format are available: standard WINS format (see
glossary) with the extension .PRN, and ASCII format with the extension
.TXT. Average, Maximum or Minimum data, dependent on selection,
may be exported in ASCII format; only Average data are available in
WINS format. Volume data may be calculated and exported in ASCII
format. Average values may be calculated from the total logged data.

Export Options allows the location of the export file to be specified, or

selected using the Browse button. Checking the Overwrite box causes
any common named files in the target directory to be overwritten without
warning; otherwise, a warning message is given to alert the operator to
the problem.

34 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

Export Filenames allows the selection of two pre-configured filenames.

These each contain the File-Id and a character for Analogue or Digital
data. The option is to include a 6-character date in the filename. The
filenames cannot otherwise be changed.

Further information on exporting data is given in section 2.4.6

2.4.1.2. Survey Mode

The General dialog window allows the default settings to be changed. It is
essential that the default COM port is set correctly, as this controls the
communication with dataloggers.

The General tab controls the main default parameters.

Options - General settings

The Database Path is not used in Survey mode.

The default COM port defaults to Port 1, but may be set as required by
clicking on the appropriate selection. The port is that used for direct

2.4.2. Quadrina
The Tools – Quadrina option allows complete calibration data for individual
Quadrina sensors to be saved in the database. These data can then be
accessed when desired from within the logger edit field, as described in section
2.5.1.4

Quadrina calibration table

The theory behind the calibration of insertion probes is discussed in the
Interfacing section of this Manual.

To start entering data in this window, first click the New button and enter the
serial number of the sensor. The appropriate selection of characteristics can
then be made.

If a QEP interface is fitted, calibration is a matter of selecting the appropriate

parameters and entering the single point calibration factor.

If a MEP interface is fitted, then either the single point calibration value can be
used (with reduced accuracy) or the multiple values of the Multi-point calibration

table can be entered. The highest flow rates are entered at the top of the list (as
they appear on the Quadrina calibration certificate).

The Quadrina information is stored in the database; it may be retrieved (by

selecting the dialog box) and edited as necessary.

The Use Default F-Factor and Pipe Diameter boxes are only active when this
screen is accessed from within the Logger Edit menu, as it is only when a site is
defined that the pipe diameter is known. The F-Factor is a correction for the
change in flow caused by the presence of the sensor. Unless values have been
accurately measured on-site, it is recommended that the default F-Factor is
used.

2.4.3. Pressure Head Loss Plot

The Pressure Head Loss Plot facility allows the pressures logged at the same
time by a series of loggers to be graphed. If these loggers are located at different
points on the same supply, then the pressure difference can be presented as a
function of the distance between the loggers, and so the pressure head loss can
be shown.

One logger is designated as the reference, and the other loggers are plotted in
terms of their distances from the reference logger.

When first used, the facility scans the database to display the names of
all loggers which have logged pressure. The names are presented in
the data window of the dialog box, with the “Not Used” indicator against
each one.

The cursor is placed on the reference logger, and the Set Reference
button clicked to set the logger. The rubric changes to “Reference”.

The other loggers to be used are selected in turn, which displays the
logger in the editing box at the top of the list. The distance from the
reference (in km) is entered by editing the “Not Used” field.
(Naturally, not all displayed loggers will be selected for the plot.)

The Pressure Gradient Name box allows the selection to be given a

name, and so recalled at a later time.

The data are saved whenever Plot or Exit is selected; Cancel does NOT
save the data.

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 39

PrimeWare

Pressure Head Loss Plot dialog box

The data for a plot may be recalled and edited at any time. Loggers may
be added or removed; the reference may be designated as another
logger; the distances from the reference may be changed. (To remove a
logger, set its distance to 0. As there can be only one reference, this
eliminates the logger from the plot.)

The Time Reference field is used to enter the exact time for the plot; it
defaults to the current time and date.

40 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

Typical Pressure Head Loss Plot

The data are displayed as a series of line segments joining the pressures
recorded by the loggers. The Y-axis is scaled in terms of the total pressure
difference, which is the total head loss over the distance covered by the loggers.

2.4.4. Export (Database mode only)

The Tools – Export selection starts the Export Wizard, which leads the user
through exporting data from the database, this option is available in Database
mode only.

The first step is to select the site from which data are to be exported. A site is
selected by clicking on it. Alternatively, if a District has been defined, data from
the loggers in that district may be exported together. Districts are discussed in
section 2.7.8

The Next button allows the data channels to be selected. Clicking on a

displayed channel selects and highlights that channel. To de-select a channel,
click on it a second time. When a District is being exported, selecting a channel
on one logger causes data from that channel to be exported from all loggers in
the District.

The default file format, options and export filenames are set from the Tools –
Options – Export tab, as described in section 2.4.1 These default settings may
be temporarily modified if required at this stage.

The Next button now allows the start date, start time and duration of the data to
be specified. Data may also be re-scaled at this stage. Finally, the Finish button
causes the export files to be generated and written to disk.

2.4.5. Supervisor
The Tools – Supervisor selection allows user levels to be controlled. Some
users are only concerned with retrieving data and presenting these d ata as
graphs and reports, whilst other users need to program dataloggers and to edit
data.

PrimeWare supports two levels of user – Supervisor with access to all functions,
and Standard which is barred from programming loggers and from all database
functions apart from creating new databases and setting up districts. This
prevents the Standard level from deleting any data.

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 41

PrimeWare

When PrimeWare is first installed the Supervisor level is enabled. This allows
the first user to disable the Supervisor level. To do this, select the mode and type
the default password of 'Primayer' (without the quotation marks). This password
is case sensitive, and so must be typed exactly as shown.

Tools – Supervisor mode

Note that the effect of un-checking the box is to disable Supervisor mode when
PrimeWare is next launched – it does NOT take effect immediately.

The password may also be changed from this screen. It is recommended that
this is done as soon as possible, so that the password is secret.

Once the level has been set to Standard, entering the Supervisor password and
clicking Accept password enables access to all functions for that session only.
When PrimeWare is next started, the Standard level will be restored.

If the password is lost at any stage, i t is necessary to contact Technical Support

at Primayer for assistance.

2.4.6. Registration
Tools – Registration is provided to enable the user to personalise the copy of
PrimeWare. After the user name is entered in the window, it will appear on the
introduction screen every time PrimeWare is started. The registered name also
appears in the Help – About PrimeWare window.

42 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

2.4.7. Battery Warning Setup

Submersible loggers are powered by an integral battery – the “Logger Battery”,
which powers all data logging and local communication functions. Submersible
loggers fitted with a modem incorporate an additional battery, which powers only
the modem – the “Modem Battery”. An external battery – the “Auxiliary Battery” –
may be fitted to power sensors with a heavy current requirement.

This option allows the voltages of all batteries to be monitored, and warnings to
be displayed and recorded when the voltage falls below the preset threshold.
Where a particular battery is not fitted, its voltage will display as 0.0V

The recommended threshold levels are those illustrated. The logger will
continue to record until the battery voltage is less than 3.0V; the modem will
operate until its supply is below 6.0V.

2.4.8. Automatic Dialling

Automatic dialling allows PrimeWare to access selected loggers periodically (a
poll) to retrieve data without operator intervention.

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 43

PrimeWare

Logger – Automatic Dialling

The sites to be dialled are selected in the manner previously described. To
disable an Autodial, remove all sites from the Selected Sites list.

Time controls the time of day when the calls are made.
Daily makes a poll every day.
Weekly makes a poll on the selected day every week.

When data are retrieved automatically from a logger, only that data existing
since the logger was last read will be retrieved.

If a logger is engaged or does not respond, Autodial will retry three times. All
retries occur at the end of the list of calls to dial. All successes and failures are
recorded in the Modem Log.

NOTE: For automatic dialling to operate correctly, PrimeWare must be running

as a background task.

44 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

2.5. PrimeLog
The PrimeWare software has 2 modes and the menu items are different in each
mode. The modes are Databas e mode and Survey mode, these are selected on
the Tools, Options menu. In Database mode the following menu items are
available: Edit, Readback, Program, Current System Info, AutoCal, Stop Logging,
GSM Powering and Psion Transfer. In Survey mode, the following menu items
are available: Readback, Program, AutoCal and Stop Logging. Each menu item
is described below.

2.5.1. Edit (Database mode only)

The Edit menu produces the logger property sheet. Depending on the logger
type selected, there may be more or fewer tab selections. Loggers with, for
example, two digital channels will display Digital 1 and Digital 2 tabs; the
operation is identical for each channel, thus only the configuration of single
analogue and digital channels is described.

On all screens the Program Now button programs the selected logger with the
parameters set in the various tabs. This feature only operates with loggers
which are connected locally.

CAUTION: Failure to select all parameters correctly may result in the logger
being programmed with the default values, or the values selected when the
logger was last programmed.

PrimeWare

2.5.1.1. Site Information tab

Logger setup: Site Information

File-Id allows the File-Id number to be selected from a drop-down list.

This is a reference used to save the data to disk.

The New button allows a new number to be entered into the list.

46 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

New site details dialog box

Clicking this button creates the next available file ID in the New File-Id
screen, and allows it to be edited to any desired value. (File IDs range
from 0001 to 4095.) A Sitename can be entered at this stage. The
Sitename is the reference for information stored in the database. It is
therefore important to ensure that a name is entered, otherwise data
may be inaccessible. NOTE: Once the OK button has been clicked, the
File-Id is fixed and cannot be changed (although the Sitename may be
changed). The Copy setup checkbox allows setup information from
another site to be copied to the new site. To do this, click on the desired
site to be copied – it will be highlighted. All setup information (apart
from the serial number) will be copied to the new site, including logging
functions and alarm thresholds.

The Logger pull-down menu allows the type of logger to be selected.

Changing the logger type changes the tabs available in this window
according to the facilities provided by the selected logger. NOTE: It is
important that the correct logger type is selected.

(If the connected logger will accept only part of the programming
information (e.g. attempting to program a PrimeLog 2 as a PrimeLog
1F), then PrimeWare will ask whether to continue or abort.) If the setup
information is incompatible with the hardware (e.g. 4 channel
parameters being programmed into a 2 -channel logger) the
programming will be aborted.

Phone Number allows a number to be entered to contact telemetry

sites. This number must be entered for sites set up for Autodialing (see
PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 47
PrimeWare

section 2.5.4). The number should contain all codes needed to access
the logger (e.g. if an access code – such as 9 - must be dialled to
obtain an outside line, then the number should start 9,…)

Notes allows text comments (32 characters) to be recorded.

If the Serial Number of the logger is known, it may be entered at this

time. Otherwise, it will be recorded when the logger is programmed or
read back.

District allows loggers to be grouped for such tasks as readback and

reporting. The District name may be entered at this stage, or later using
the District Setup function – see section 2.7.8.

Delete Site allows the current site details and all associated stored
data to be deleted. Caution must be exercised when using this function,
as once a site is deleted it cannot be restored. (This option is disabled
at the Standard level of access in PrimeWare.)

The GSM Modem option, when checked as shown, causes the GSM
Standby mode tab to appear. This feature is discussed in section
2.5.1.6

48 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

2.5.1.2. Analogue tab

Logger setup: Analogue tab

Channel Description defaults to Pressure, but the description may be
changed to identify the measurement function of the channel.

Sensor is selected from a pull-down menu. Depending on the sensor

selected, other relevant parameters are displayed. In the case of
loggers with internal pressure transducers, this parameter is fi xed.

When an external pressure transducer is selected, the following

parameters appear:

Ground Level is an offset value for a pressure transducer,

which enables measurements to be referenced to a common
datum (usually Ordnance Datum).

PCAL (see Glossary) and Pressure Offset are individual

calibration values for a pressure transducer, and are supplied
with the transducer. When the transducer is internal to the
logger, these boxes are greyed.

Perform AutoCal ... refers to a method of correcting the drift

with time of a transducer, and involves measuring the
transducer output when it is sensing atmospheric pressure (in
PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 49
PrimeWare

other words, measuring the zero offset). This may only be

performed if the transducer is not connected to pressure at the
time when the logger is programmed. If the value of pressure
offset is known, this function is not required.
NOTE: AutoCal may also be performed directly from a separate
menu item (under Logger) to enable this calibration to be
carried out independently of any other function.

If Current or Voltage input is selected, a different set of parameters

appear:

If 0 –10mA or 4–20mA flow is selected, the Full Scale value to

be entered is the value in CuM/hr (i.e. M3/hr - see glossary)
corresponding to 10 or 20mA as appropriate. The Offset is the
value of current produced when zero units are measured. Note
that the measurement will be displayed in the default flow units
of litres/second

If 0 –10mA, 4–20mA or one of the various voltage inputs is

selected, the Full Scale value to be entered is the maximum
value (in the units being measured) corresponding to the
upper limit of the input as appropriate. The Offset is the value
produced when zero units are measured. The measurement
will be displayed in the specified units.

Units is a text field which defaults to Metres, but should be

changed to describe the parameter being measured. This text
appears as the data description in Graphs and Reports.

Alternative Scaling allows the scaling units and calculation factors to

be changed. These values are stored, and may be recalled when
displaying reports and graphs (using the Units button). This function
modifies the data temporarily for display; it does not change the data
stored in the database. (As an example of the use of this function, take
the case where data are stored in metres head, but it is desired to
display in bar. In this case, Units is Bar, Multiplier is 0.098, Offset is 0.)

The Currently Logging window is a live display, displaying the active

logging activities at the site being monitored. If, for example, a function
has been set to log for a period, then the function will be displayed
during that period but will disappear once the period has elapsed.

50 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

New allows a different logging function to be defined; Edit

allows a previous ly-defined function to be changed. Both
buttons open the Logging Function Parameters screen,
described in the next section. To edit a function, first highlight it
then click the Edit button.

The Delete button allows a (previously highlighted) logging

function to be deleted.

The Quick Program button selects a default logging function to

be added to the list of activities. The parameters are: 15 minute
measurement interval, average data type, cyclic logging mode;
the description is Analogue 1 15 Minute Average.

2.5.1.3. Logging Function Parameters screen

The Logging Function Parameters Screen (shown overleaf) controls how the
logger records data from each channel. (This screen is common to all logging
functions and to both Analogue and Digital channels.) As an example, a typical
logging function might be 15 minute average pressure logging, cyclically. Up to
four independent logging functions (only one of each data type) may be
programmed. Note that the Total is only available for digital inputs.

Logging Function Parameters Screen

A Description should be entered for the selected logging mode, as this

is the reference used to identify the data when displaying a graph or
report. It is advisable to make this description precise in order to readily
identify the specific data.

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 51

PrimeWare

Data Type and Logging Interval are fundamental parameters, but note
that the logging intervals are pre-set. These are selected from a list, or
may be typed; an error message will appear if an invalid interval is
typed.

The logging modes are s elected from the box on the top right of screen.
There are four modes:
Cyclic logging allows the function to continue indefinitely, as
the latest reading overwrites the oldest record once the
memory is full.
Log for starts logging immediately the logger i s programmed
and continues for the specified number of days (max 100).
Stop when full is self-explanatory, and starts immediately the
logger is programmed.
Specific allows an exact logging period to be defined. The
default settings have the start time 15 minutes in advance of
the PC clock, and the stop time 24 hours later. Both times may
be edited as required. Note that if the start time is passed
before the logger is programmed, the logger will not be setup
successfully.

2.5.1.4. Digital tab

Logger setup: Digital tab

The Digital tab produces a dialog box which is similar to the analogue
parameter box. Naturally, a different range of sensors is available for selection.

Description defaults to Flow but may be edited.

The Sensor pull-down box displays a list of common flow sensors. If

there is any problem with the selection of a suitable sensor, technical
advice should be obtained from Primayer. The parameters displayed
vary with the choice of sensor. If a selected sensor requires external
power, a warning message is displayed.

FCAL (defined in the Glossary) is the specific value for the sensor in
use. Appendix 4 contains FCAL values for various types of sensor. If the
wrong value of FCAL is used, data read from the logger will be
erroneous. The value of FCAL can be corrected after data has been
logged using the Advanced Programming feature – see section 2.5.2)

The Setup Calibration button is only active for Combination meters and
for Quadrina Insertion probes. Setting calibration for a combination
meter is a matter of entering the FCAL factors for the Main meter and for

PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 53

PrimeWare

the Bypass meter. If a Quadrina sensor is selected, the Quadrina

calibration table is displayed, as described in section 2.4.2

The Very low flows expected checkbox should be used with caution,
as it sets a special sampling mode,. This is explained in the warning
which is displayed if this option is checked:
"Setting this flag will set the sample period for the flow sensor equal to
the measurement interval, and should only b e used if the flow rate input
expected is less than 1 pulse/minute. Min/Max data cannot be logged if
this flag is set. Similarly this flag cannot be used with a Combination
Meter. The display of current flow under the System Information option
will update less frequently”.

The Reset Total Flow checkbox allows the totalising counter in the
logger to be reset (or not) when the logger is programmed.

The remainder of the Digital tab operates in the same manner as the Analogue
tab discussed in section 2.5.1.2. The Quick Program button sets a default
digital logging function. This is the same as the analogue function, except that it
is described as 15 minute avg cyclic flow (D1).

2.5.1.5. Events tab

Logger setup: Events tab

54 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

An event is a threshold value, which if breached causes the datalogger to record

the occurrence. Events can be retrieved and reported. Both high and low
thresholds may be set; these are independent of each logging function selected.
A deadband value prevents the logger continuously taking action on events if the
parameter fluctuates around the threshold value, as the parameter must change
by the deadband value in order to 're-arm' the event recording. (The deadband
applies both above and below the selected threshold.)

The window displays logging functions to which events may be attached.

Checking the High or Low box allows the appropriate value to be entered; the
deadband should be set to a suitable value to prevent repeated actuation of the
event.

If the logger is configured for telemetry, then checking the Alarm Dial Out box will
cause the datalogger to make an alarm call when an event occurs, so providing
an immediate notification of on-site conditions. Up to four telephone numbers
may be programmed; if the logger fails to connect to the first number, it will call
the second and so on until it is successful.

2.5.1.6. GSM Standby mode

This tab defines the standby times i.e. the times when the GSM modem is
powered and so is available for communication.

GSM Standby tab

A GSM modem is effectively a mobile telephone, and so has the same

characteristics – notably that of high power consumption. Such modems are
always powered from an external source.

It is normally recommended that GSM modems are only powered for short
periods of time to minimise power consumption. Naturally, communication with
the logger (in either direction) is only possible during these periods.

It is important that the time of first power-up is some time in the future, or
programming of the logger will fail.

It is necessary to plan the system operation when selecting the standby times
and duration. For example, the logger may be part of an Auto-Dial (see section
2.4.8) poll, so it is necessary to ensure that the poll occurs at a time when the
logger is available for communication. A recommended configuration is to have
the logger power its modem every 12 hours at 00:00 and 12:00, and for the poll

56 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

to occur at 00:00. (If a logger is communicating at the end of its power-up time,
the modem will remain powered until the communication ceases.)

2.5.1.7. Program Now

The Program Now button allows the current configuration (site and channel
parameters) to be programmed into the connected datalogger. If the logger
contains unread data, a warning notice is displayed to advise that this data will
be lost if programming is performed. When the logger has been programmed
successfully, the user is offered the opportunity to generate a configuration
report detailing the parameters set in the logger.

If there is no requirement to program the parameters into a logger immediately,

the user may return to the Site Information tab and select a new site for
configuring. When all information has been input, clicking the OK button saves
all new site and channel details to the database and exits from the logger setup.

2.5.2. Readback (Database mode)

The Readback wizard controls the selection of data to be recovered. Either a
single locally connected logger or a series of remote loggers may be selected.
For remote loggers, highlight a desired site and click on the left double-arrow
button to make the site appear in the Selected window. Repeat as necessary to
select all desired sites. Sites selected in error may be removed by using the
right double-arrow button.

Readback Wizard - site selection

The data selection screen allows the selection of data to be retrieved as all,
since last read, and by defining start and stop times.

The screen displays the data available from the datalogger. If the selected
datalogger was setup on the same system as is being used for readback, then
the descriptions of the available data will be that entered by the user (as this is
stored in the database), otherwise the default data description stored in the
logger will be shown.

2.5.3. Readback (Survey mode)

When the logger is in survey mode, the selection of readback will start
communication between the pc a nd the logger. As data comes back from the
logger the Readback Survey Logger screen is built up with appropriate
information. The Comms Progress window shows progress of the readback
and the progress bar will scroll across several times. If there is a
communication fault an error message is shown.

The logger information is read and presented on the Readback Survey Logger
dialog. Logger information is displayed as previ ously set up on the logger and
can be edited (the serial number cannot be changed). The sensor type can be
selected as required, and the FCAL Value: Litres/Pulse and Units can be
changed as required.

60 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

PrimeWare

The lower part of the dialog allows the filename for the saved data to be changed
as required, and the options to Stop logging after readback and Graph after
readback can be selected as required.

When the selections have been made the Read and Save button will start the
readback process. Communication of data from the logger is present on an
additional comms progress window.

On completion of the readback a survey setup report is displayed, or if the graph

after readback checkbox was selected (on the Readback Survey Logger Dialog),
the data in graphical format is shown. The saved data can be opened as
required using a suitable package, for example Microsoft Excel in the normal
way.

2.5.4. Program (Database mode)

Logger: Program
The screen allows previously configured sites stored in the database to be
selected for downloading to dataloggers. Loggers may be programmed
individually or in batches. To select several sites, hold down either Shift or Alt
when clicking on site names. (If loggers are connected locally, the user is
prompted to change the logger.) A batch of loggers must be programmed using
one mode of programming – in other words, it is not possible to mix local
programming and programming by modem in the same batch.

If the logger contains unread data, a warning notice is dis played to advise that
this data will be lost if programming is performed. When a logger has been
PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 61
PrimeWare

programmed successfully, the opportunity is given to generate a configuration

report.

The Advanced button allows parts of the programming information to be

selected for individual loggers (so that, for example, a group of loggers could
have only the logging period changed).

This feature can also be used to program sensor information only. As an

example, assume that the wrong value of FCAL has been used, and that the
logger has recorded flow data. Using this feature, the flow sensor can be set
correctly and the existing data retrieved using the new value of FCAL.

Logger: Advanced Programming

2.5.5. Program (Survey mode)

The Program option in survey mode allows the user to program the logger (or
several loggers) with location, sensor types and logging mode information, this
information is programmed into the logger(s) when the Program Now button is
clicked. When programming more than 1 logger with similar information, only
the individual logger-specific fields need be changed (e.g. Site Name).

The Program Loggers dialog has 4 tabs, these are General, Digital 1, Analogue
1 and Time, where the logger has additional sensor input channels thes e will be
show as additional tabs.

On each dialog there are 4 buttons, OK, Cancel, Program Now and Help.

The Time tab allows the user to program in the logging frequency and period.
There are 4 modes that control the over-all logging time, Cyclic Logging, Log for:
(various periods available from pull-down menu), Stop when full Logging and
Specific (start and stop date and times can be entered).

The Logging Interval allows the frequency of logging measurement to be

controlled during the logging period. The interval can be chosen from pre-
defined values using the mouse – or a user specific value can be manually
entered from the keyboard.

The OK button closes the dialog window with current settings, the Program Now
button will send the program data to the logger.

Clicking the Setup button retrieves and displays the system setup information in
the datalogger. This displays the current logging function(s), event status and
sensor selection.

Current System Info: Setup data

Stop Logging aborts all logging functions in the logger. All data are
retained for subsequent retrieval. This facility is useful if the logger is to
be stored for some time, as it conserves battery power and prevents the
logger from powering any sensor – particularly integral pressure
transducers.

2.5.7. AutoCal
AutoCal provides the facility to remove any transducer error immediately. As this
involves measuring the transducer output when it is sensing atmospheric
pressure (in other words, measuring the zero offset), this function should only be
performed if the transducer is not connected to pressure at the time when the
AutoCal is performed.

2.5.8. Stop Logging

This option stops all logging on the attached logger, so enhancing the life of the
battery. Any data present in the logger will be stored, and may be read at any
time.

2.5.9. GSM Powering (Database mode only)

This option allows a locally-connected logger to be powered up to the GSM
network, or alternatively to be immediately powered down. Once a logger is
powered down it will no longer be available for GSM communication.
68 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual
PrimeWare

CAUTION: Use of this option in either mode causes the logger to ignore the GSM
standby times previously programmed. The only way to restore the GSM standby
times is to reprogram the logger.

2.5.10. Psion Transfer (Database mode only)

The Psion Transfer function reads logger data from the Psion Workabout, where
it has been stored for transport.

This function may be invoked from the menu or from the Psion button on the
main toolbar. All selection and transfer of data is controlled from the host
computer.

The Workabout must be connected to the selected serial port of the PC using a
null modem or PC-to-PC cable. It is not important whether the transfer mode is
first selected from the Workabout or from the host computer, provided that both
selections are made within 10 seconds. As has been mentioned, the Comms
port used for the Psion transfer is configured from the Tools – Options menu.

Once communication is established between the Workabout and the host, all
the site information in the Workabout is downloaded and a list of sites available
for download is displayed. One or several sites may be selected for download,
using the data from one or more data channels at each site.

Once the selection has been made, the Transfer button causes the data to be
transferred; the host displays a status bar to indicate the progress of the
transfer.

NOTE: The data will be stored automatically in the directory specified in the
current data path, as set in the Tools – Options menu (see section 2.4.1)

If necessary, the transfer may be interrupted by clicking the Abort button.

Most of the functions are self-descriptive, but note that the Display graph button
displays a graph of the data displayed on-screen in the report. To change the
amount of data displayed, change the font size.

2.6.2.8. Printing reports

Reports are not printed in the same format as they are displayed on-screen, as
the default is to portrait format.

Print preview displays reports as they will be printed. If data extend across
several pages, this feature allows the correct page of a multi -page report to be
selected for printing. This is the only way to select the correct page!

The sizes of fonts used when printing a report are normally set automatically, but
if the font sizes are changed by using the toolbar buttons then these font sizes
are used when printing. This controls the number of values which are printed on
a page.

An example of a print preview is shown on the following page.

2.6.3. Saving to file

Both graph and report data may be saved to file.

Saved files contain data (rather than a representation of the graph/report), and
so are fully transportable. A saved file may be re-loaded and displayed in the
other format (i.e. a saved graph file may be displayed as a report) if desired.

Graphs are denoted as PGR files; reports are PRP files.

2.6.4. Copy to clipboard

Both graphs and reports may be copied to the clipboard for incorporation into
another document. It is the image which is copied (i.e. a bitmap), not the data.

recorded data stored in the database and site information.

2.7.1. Create database

This function allows new databases to be created.

Create Database screen

The database is created in the directory shown in the box.

The Update checkbox changes the default database path to the newly created
database. Note that there are no sites in a newly created database. Sites are
added using the Logger – Edit menu, as described in section 2.5

2.7.2. Delete database

This function deletes an existing database.

WARNING: Deleting a database causes all data contained in that database to

become inaccessible.

2.7.3. Merge Databases

This function adds data from one database into another. It may be used, for
example, to duplicate an existing database, or to combine data from two
separate databases into one (which may be one of the existing databases, or
may be newly created).

A warning is given if a merging site has the same name as an existing site.
88 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

2.8. PrimeProbe
2.8.1. Overview

The PrimeProbe facility allows the use of the PrimeProbe, AquaProbe2

(insertion flow meters) and the AquaMaster2 (full bore flow meter).

To prevent confusion, the following text will refer to the 'flow meter'. This refers to
the PrimeProbe, the AquaProbe2 and the AquaMaster2.

The flow meter transmitter head contains three integral data loggers allowing
either temporary or permanent monitoring of flow and pressure from a site,
without the need for an external data logger.

The integral data loggers allow logging of average flow and pressure (at two
independent measurement intervals) and flow total. A typical configuration would
be to have the first data logger recording flow and pressure at 15-minute
intervals and the second recording these values at 1 -minute intervals. The
second logger would only be interrogated and read back when more detail is

introduced by the longer measurement interval.
The flow total logger will log a value at midnight, recording the total flow to have
passed through the meter in the previous 24 hours. The measurement interval
cannot be changed for this logger.

All values recorded by the internal data loggers are derived directly from the
measured flow velocity, so there will be no quantisation errors introduced by
converting to a digital output for an external data logger.

2.8.2. Probe/Master (Database mode)

The top level menu item - 'Probe/Master' has a single menu item that allows
readback and limited programming of the flow meter transmitter head.

Data can be recovered either via a direct local comms link, or via the Radiopad
interface (provided this is fitted to the transmitter head).

The data selection s creen allows the selection of data to be recovered. Each
logger can be read back individually. The option is given to change the
measurement interval for each logger after read back. If this option is selected
all data for that logger will be destroyed after read back. On readback all data are
automatically saved into the database.

A further option allows selection for the time update. If the time is synchronised
with the PC before read back all data read back will be associated with this new
time. If the time is synchronised after read back all the data will be associated
with the time before update. A final option is available for not updating the time.

Graphing and reporting facilities for flow meter data are the same as for

3.PSION WORKABOUT®

PrimeLog V1.4x
This chapter documents the facilities and use of a Psion Workabout loaded with
PrimeLog V1.3 software.

For instructions on loading the software into Workabout, refer to section 3.4 at
the end of this chapter.

3.1. Introduction
The Psion Workabout is a robust handheld computer which provides a means of
accessing PrimeLog loggers through a serial link, and thereby is a rugged,
smaller and lighter alternative to a portable computer. A Workabout can retrieve
data from a logger, display data graphically and numerically, and can program
the input channels. Retrieved data can be subsequently downloaded to a PC-
compatible computer for archival storage and for analysis.

Workabout has a 39 character x 12 line screen and a 57-key keyboard.

The PrimeLog software provides the following facilities:

• Display of real time measurements

• Programming of dataloggers

• Readback of data from one or more channels, with option to select time
period

• Storage of data from several loggers for subsequent transfer to

PrimeWare on PC

• View retrieved data

• Graph retrieved data

3.2.1. Main Screen

PrimeLog V1.3

Data Access Unit

Read View Program

The Read, View and Program actions are those most commonly used, and so
are accessible directly from the main screen by pressing R, V or P respectively.

All other options are accessed by pressing the Menu key on Workabout. Note
that the Menu key is only active when the Main screen is displayed.

When performing a function which accesses the datalogger, a warning is

displayed if there is more than one minute difference between the time on the
logger internal clock and the time held in Workabout. The user is then given the
option of synchronising the clocks.

NOTE: It is essential (for data security) to return to the Main screen after
completing a series of operations with a datalogger and before attempting to
communicate with another datalogger or before powering down Workabout. It is
not necessary, however, to exit from the PrimeLog program before powering
down.

3.2.2. Read (from Main screen)

This function is accessed by pressing R. The function automatically retrieves
unread data from all channels of the connected datalogger. (in other words, it
performs the All Channels (since last read) menu operation.)

Pressing R causes Workabout to display the start and stop dates of data stored
in the Workabout database; the display is blank if no data is currently stored.
Pressing R again causes the retrieval of data from the datalogger; a progress
bar shows the proportion of data retrieved for each logging function. When

104 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual

retrieval is complete the display is updated to show the start and stop times for
the data on each channel.

The option to view the stored data (average values only), as described in section
3.3.2, is given; alternatively, pressing Esc returns to the Main screen.

3.2.3. View (from Main screen)

This function is accessed by pressing V. The function allows the reading of real
time values from the datalogger.

Pressing V causes Workabout to retrieve the current data and display the
channel type(s), the current value(s) and the total(s) as appropriate.

Pressing V again updates the display. This may be done as often as required,
subject only to the time to access and transfer current data.

Pressing Esc returns to the Main menu.

3.2.4. Program (from Main screen)

This function is accessed by pressing P. The function allows the logging
function(s) of the channel(s) to be changed. Sensor configuration and calibration
cannot be performed from this function.

Editing the logging parameters is described in section 3.3.3.

Pressing Esc returns to the Main menu.

3.4. PrimeLog software installation

These ins tructions detail the operations to install the PrimeLog application in a
Psion Workabout.

1. Connect the Psion RS232 Port to port COM2 of the PC. Use a PC to PC
cable, also called a NULL modem cable - do not use a standard serial
cable. If COM2 is not available, see below for instructions on changing the
PC port.

2. In the System screen of the Psion (the one containing the icons), move to
the Special menu and select the Remote Link option. This screen will
probably say that the Remote Link is Off. Turn the Remote Link On, and set
the Baud Rate to 19200 and the Port to A. This allows the Psion to see the
PC which is transferring the files to it.

3. Press Enter to accept this screen, and move back to the PC.

4. Open a DOS prompt, change to the floppy drive and type install if the
software is being installed for the first time, or update if the software is
being updated.

5. This launches MCLINK, a Psion program which copies four files to the
Psion. It may take a minute or two to complete. When MCLINK has finished
move back to the Psion.

6. Select the Remote Link menu option again, and turn the Remote Link Off. If
in the System screen there is a PrimeLog icon and caption, then the
installation is complete. Otherwise the icon has to be installed. Move to the
Apps menu and select Install. One of the applications in the list to install
should be primelog.app. Select this to install, and the icon will appear on
the main screen.

NOTE: It may happen that the last command of the Install program displays an
error message on the PC which says File Already Exists, and allows selection
of Abandon or Continue. Using the Spacebar and Enter key select the Abandon
option. (This is simply the install program trying to create a directory which
already exists, so the error message can be ignored.)

Psion Workabout

3.4.1. Changing the COM port

The install and update programs work by installing from COM2 of the PC. If
COM2 is not available then the following procedure will change the installation to
work on COM1. This must be done after the Remote Link has been enabled on
the Psion.

1. Open a DOS prompt, change to the floppy drive, then type del mclink.trm.

2. After the file has been deleted type mclink. This starts MCLINK, the Psion
communication program.

3. At the prompt type set –p1 –b19200 and press ENTER

4. Type exit and press ENTER to halt MCLINK.

The installation or upgrade can then be run as previously described by typing

install or update.

Appendix 2: Meter Scaling Tables

4.2.4. Supplementary Notes for Meter Scaling Tables

FCAL = NO. LITRES PER PULSE

4.2.4.1. Kent Meters:

* Some earlier 100mm meters require the following:
FCAL = 100(PU10/LRP) or 10(PU100/HRP). These meters can be distinguished by the centre pointer dial registration =
1000 litres/rev.
** Applies to 7 digit counters only, the other FCAL’s apply to the 8 digit counters.
Kent combination meters use a Helix 3000 meter as the main meter and a PSM-T as the secondary meter. Select the
appropriate FCAL from the table above for each of the meters.

Master 2000 has been discontinued.

4.2.4.2. Schlumberger meters:

* It should be noted that the ‘S’ pulse unit is factory fitted and that various outputs can be specified at this time. The
individual meter should be checked before selecting the appropriate FCAL.

Schlumberger combination meters use a Woltex meter as the main meter and a Flowstar as the secondary meter.
Depending on the size mix, select the appropriate FCAL from the table above for each of the meters.

122 PrimeLog System User Manual

Appendix 2: Meter Scaling Tables

4.2.4.3. Socam meters:

*The K510 pulse unit is factory fitted and cannot be removed. The FCAL is determined at the factory and the above table
shows the values available. The individual meter should be checked before selecting the appropriate FCAL.

The K505R is a removable reedswitch with only two FCAL values available.

** It is recommended that the K10 position on the index head be used at all times when using the R02.2 and RD022
reedswitch as this will give a higher resolution. The two Opto devices use K=1000 as a pulsed output value.

Appendix 4: Safety

4.4. Appendix 4: Safety

4.4.1. Airfreight Regulations applicable to PrimeLogs

PrimeLogs are powered by internal C -size Lithium cells, and as such are
governed by the appropriate regulations issued by ICAO and IATA.

The effect of these regulations can be summarised in two parts:

4.4.1.1. Shipment of loggers in new condition

Loggers containing new batteries may be shipped by passenger or freight
airline. A waterproof package must be used; this may be an inner sealed plastic
bag. The equipment must be packed securely so that no movement can occur
within the package.

There is no restriction on the number of loggers in any package.

A special warning label (Hazard Label for Class 9 - Miscellaneous Dangerous

Goods) must be affixed to the outside of the package. This label is readily
available from packaging suppliers.

4.4.1.2. Shipment of loggers with discharged batteries

It is expressly forbidden to ship equipment with discharged batteries.

Cells which are discharged or in a condition close to discharge must be

removed from loggers (and subjected to correct disposal) before shipping such
loggers by air. Naturally, loggers which do not contain any batteries are exempt
from the requirements quoted above.

NOTE: This summary applies only to batteries contained within the loggers, not
to unmounted batteries for which other sections of the Regulations are
applicable.
