1.1. Introduction
PrimeLog is a family of advanced data loggers specifically designed for
applications in the Water Industry. A typical range of applications includes:
• District, domestic and leakage flow monitoring
• Network analysis
• Pressure monitoring
• PRV monitoring
• Open channel flow
• Reservoir and borehole depth
The range of loggers offers single, two or four data input channels; this manual
describes operation i n a general manner, thus some sections may not be
applicable to particular loggers.

.......................Digital input
.......................Analogue input
.......................Internal modem
All logger types are optionally available with an integral PSTN modem for remote
programming and data collection.
PrimeLog (Model 2)
Submersible loggers are powered by an internal battery with a design life of five
years or more, depending on the nature of use. However, it should be noted that
battery life will be affected significantly by temperature. If the unit is operated
continually above 30°C or below 0°C then battery life will be reduced. All models
have the option of an internal PSTN modem powered by an additional internal
battery. (The case of such loggers is lengthened to accommodate the extra
cells.)
These loggers are fitted with military-grade connectors and are sealed to IP68.
Because of the connection method, the auxiliary battery pack is connected to the
logger after programming and has to be disconnected temporarily when
communicating with the logger. This will result in the logger not recording data
from the digital sensor during periods of disconnection.
All battery voltages may be monitored continually and alarms generated if any
voltage falls below the preset threshold – see section 2.4.7.
1.4.1. Sealing
The connectors fitted to submersible PrimeLogs are waterproof only when
mated with a matching connector, or when the captive sealing cap is fitted.
Connectors will only seal correctly if dirt is excluded from the mating faces.
Logger sensors operate at low levels of current, consequently any penetration of
moisture is likely to cause electrical leakage causing degradation or destruction
of data. Contaminated connectors may be cleaned by scrubbing with a brush
using industrial alcohol (m ethylated spirits).
It is good practice when connections are made to ensure that the sealing caps
are also mated to each other. This prevents dirt and moisture accumulating in
the cap and so being transferred to the connector.
1.4.2. Polarisation
All PrimeLog connectors are polarised, such that it is impossible to connect the
wrong input.
allowed to enter the vent tube then the operation of the sensor may be impaired
or irreparably damaged. This damage is not covered by any warranty.
If the logger starts before the sensor is connected, no malfunction will occur but
the data up to the time when the sensor was connected will be zero values.
A hose with male and female connectors is available to connect the logger to the
pressure m onitoring point.
Care must be taken to avoid pressure shock when connecting to the transducer,
as this can damage or destroy the sensing diaphragm.
Voltage input range is nominally 0 - 21V DC. Voltages outside this range require
a special cable; standard voltage ranges available are 0 - 5V and 0 - 10V.
Current input requires a special cable. This is suitable for 0 - 10mA, 0 - 20mA
and 4 - 20mA ranges.
If the logger starts before the sensor is connected, no malfunction will occur but
the data up to the time when the sensor was connected will be zero values.
1.6. Interfacing
The QEP interface requires no power from the logger and so is compatible with
all PrimeLog instruments. Its pulse frequency is linear against velocity
The MEP interface normally requires power from the logger. The PrimeLog
submersible range requires an Auxiliary Battery Unit to be used. The MEP output
pulse frequency is non-linear.
If the MEP interface has been specified to be powered internally, PrimeLogs can
be interfaced directly without auxiliary batteries.
Probes fitted with QEP interfaces have a single-point calibration. For the non-
linear MEP interfaces, calibration figures are supplied for several different
velocities. From these values a mean factor is also calculated, which is
convenient to use but which does introduce some error.
For both interfaces, single point calibration is simply entering the value given on
the calibration certificate.
PrimeWare automatically sets up the logger to calculate the flow rate in litres per
second.

2.PRIMEWARE
This chapter documents the features and use of Prim eWare.
2.1. Introduction
The application provides wizards which assist the operator by leading through
such tasks as logger programming and generating data presentations using the
powerful graphing and tabular reporting capabilities.
Database mode is mainly used where a number of loggers are installed in fixed
locations to monitor a network. Survery mode is mainly used where a number of
PrimeWare - PrimeLog System Us er Manual 17
PrimeWare
loggers are similarly programmed (with different location information) for the
monitoring of a network for survey purposes.
• 486 (but Pentium recommended) with 16MB RAM and Windows 95/98,
Windows 2000 or Windows NT V4.0
• 6MB available hard disk space
As with any application, the higher the specification of the host system, the better
PrimeWare will operate.
Note that Primayer cannot support technical enquiries relating to, or caused by
problems with, the operating system (e.g. Windows 95) installed on any host.
2.2. Installation
It is assumed that the host system already has the operating system and any
peripheral devices correctly configured; in particular, as detailed below, any
modems must be installed before PrimeWare is installed.
Ensure that the host system meets the minimum requirements, as described in
the previous section.
It is recommended that the default directory names are used wherever possible.
Once the directory names are selected, installation is simply a matter of
changing diskettes when prompted.
Once installed, PrimeWare is run from the Program menu. If desired, an icon for
PrimeWare may be placed on the desktop using the standard Windows
methods.
Insert Diskette 1, click on Start, then Run. Type a:\setup.exe and hit Enter. The
installation process will start. (Alternatively, when the Run window appears, click
on Browse, then select 3½Floppy [A:] , then select Setup.exe and click on OK.)
This loads the Setup Wizard which then installs the software.
When using Windows, in most cases the “Plug-and-Play” capability will ensure
that the modem is automatically recognised and configured, but sometimes the
installation and configuration must be performed by hand. As these operations
are outside the scope of this manual, please refer to the “modems, setting up”
section of the Windows help system for a guide to the procedure.
NOTE: PrimeWare will operate in local communications mode (i.e. with loggers
connected directly to the PC) without a modem being installed on the PC. If
desired, a modem can subsequently be installed, whereupon PrimeWare will
communicate with remote dataloggers equipped for telemetry.
2.3. Startup
The View options accessed from the main menu control what is displayed on-
screen. It is assumed throughout the following description that Toolbar and
Status options are both selected. However, either or both of these displays may
be inhibited if desired by clicking on the display name to uncheck it.
The next stage of operation is to configure PrimeLog equipment for use. This is
described in sections 2.5.1 and 2.5.2
Once the dataloggers are in operation and have acquired data, it is necessary to
retrieve these data. This is described in sections 2.5.3 and 2.5.4
Once recovered, data may be displayed and printed in a variety of formats. This
is described in section 2.6
The main tool bar provides easy access to the main software fu nctions, there
are two main toolbars, one for Database mode and one for Survey mode (the
mode is selected from the tools, options menu. The toolbars are similar, both
are detailed below.

2.4. Tools
2.4.1. Options
There are two modes of operation, these are Database mode (see section
2.4.2) and Survey mode (see section 2.4.3). The mode required is set on the
Options, General dialog window, different options are available for each mode,
these are detailed in the appropriate section. The Survey mode allows more
flexible data monitoring for network analysis and similar operations.
The Database Path is the location where data files retrieved from
PrimeLog dataloggers are stored. When first setup, this is the default
storage location but this may be changed if desired or if a new
database has been created, as described in section 2.7.1 Databases
may be located using the Browse button, which displays the contents of
directories.
The default COM port defaults to Port 1, but may be set as required by
clicking on the appropriate selection. The port is that used for direct
communication with the datalogger; it is NOT the modem port.
Set Psion default comms port defines the port used when
communicating with a Psion Workabout (see section 0).
The Graph tab allows the trace colours, the graph and Y-axes titles and the font
to be changed, and allows the graticule to be displayed.
To select a colour for a trace or for the graph background, click the
desired colour square and drag it to the trace or background.
The information entered for the graph and Y-axes titles is reproduced
on every graph. This information may also be changed from within the
graph wizard, as described in section 2.6.1.1
The Select Graph Font button opens a standard Windows dialog box to
select the font, style and colour. The text size is selected automatically
to suit the data being displayed. The Select Save Directory allows the
location of saved data files to be specified.
The Y-Axis 1 and Y-Axis 2 Setup buttons are used to set the scaling for
these axes.
The Report tab allows the report title and font to be selected, in the same
manner as described above for the Graph.
The Export tab allows the selection of the file format, path for export file and file
name for data to be exported.
The default COM port defaults to Port 1, but may be set as required by
clicking on the appropriate selection. The port is that used for direct
communication with the datalogger; it is NOT the modem port.
The Select Psion default comms port option is not available in Survey
mode.
The Receive Alarm Calls, Audio warning on receipt of alarm call, select
the default comms media and Select Default Modem options are not
available in Survey mode.
The Y-Axis 1 and Y-Axis 2 Setup buttons are used to set the scaling for
these axes.
2.4.2. Quadrina
The Tools – Quadrina option allows complete calibration data for individual
Quadrina sensors to be saved in the database. These data can then be
accessed when desired from within the logger edit field, as described in section
2.5.1.4
To start entering data in this window, first click the New button and enter the
serial number of the sensor. The appropriate selection of characteristics can
then be made.
If a MEP interface is fitted, then either the single point calibration value can be
used (with reduced accuracy) or the multiple values of the Multi-point calibration
table can be entered. The highest flow rates are entered at the top of the list (as
they appear on the Quadrina calibration certificate).
The Use Default F-Factor and Pipe Diameter boxes are only active when this
screen is accessed from within the Logger Edit menu, as it is only when a site is
defined that the pipe diameter is known. The F-Factor is a correction for the
change in flow caused by the presence of the sensor. Unless values have been
accurately measured on-site, it is recommended that the default F-Factor is
used.
One logger is designated as the reference, and the other loggers are plotted in
terms of their distances from the reference logger.
When first used, the facility scans the database to display the names of
all loggers which have logged pressure. The names are presented in
the data window of the dialog box, with the “Not Used” indicator against
each one.
The cursor is placed on the reference logger, and the Set Reference
button clicked to set the logger. The rubric changes to “Reference”.
The other loggers to be used are selected in turn, which displays the
logger in the editing box at the top of the list. The distance from the
reference (in km) is entered by editing the “Not Used” field.
(Naturally, not all displayed loggers will be selected for the plot.)
The data are saved whenever Plot or Exit is selected; Cancel does NOT
save the data.
The Time Reference field is used to enter the exact time for the plot; it
defaults to the current time and date.
The first step is to select the site from which data are to be exported. A site is
selected by clicking on it. Alternatively, if a District has been defined, data from
the loggers in that district may be exported together. Districts are discussed in
section 2.7.8
The default file format, options and export filenames are set from the Tools –
Options – Export tab, as described in section 2.4.1 These default settings may
be temporarily modified if required at this stage.
The Next button now allows the start date, start time and duration of the data to
be specified. Data may also be re-scaled at this stage. Finally, the Finish button
causes the export files to be generated and written to disk.
2.4.5. Supervisor
The Tools – Supervisor selection allows user levels to be controlled. Some
users are only concerned with retrieving data and presenting these d ata as
graphs and reports, whilst other users need to program dataloggers and to edit
data.
PrimeWare supports two levels of user – Supervisor with access to all functions,
and Standard which is barred from programming loggers and from all database
functions apart from creating new databases and setting up districts. This
prevents the Standard level from deleting any data.
When PrimeWare is first installed the Supervisor level is enabled. This allows
the first user to disable the Supervisor level. To do this, select the mode and type
the default password of 'Primayer' (without the quotation marks). This password
is case sensitive, and so must be typed exactly as shown.
The password may also be changed from this screen. It is recommended that
this is done as soon as possible, so that the password is secret.
Once the level has been set to Standard, entering the Supervisor password and
clicking Accept password enables access to all functions for that session only.
When PrimeWare is next started, the Standard level will be restored.
2.4.6. Registration
Tools – Registration is provided to enable the user to personalise the copy of
PrimeWare. After the user name is entered in the window, it will appear on the
introduction screen every time PrimeWare is started. The registered name also
appears in the Help – About PrimeWare window.
This option allows the voltages of all batteries to be monitored, and warnings to
be displayed and recorded when the voltage falls below the preset threshold.
Where a particular battery is not fitted, its voltage will display as 0.0V
The recommended threshold levels are those illustrated. The logger will
continue to record until the battery voltage is less than 3.0V; the modem will
operate until its supply is below 6.0V.
Time controls the time of day when the calls are made.
Daily makes a poll every day.
Weekly makes a poll on the selected day every week.
When data are retrieved automatically from a logger, only that data existing
since the logger was last read will be retrieved.
If a logger is engaged or does not respond, Autodial will retry three times. All
retries occur at the end of the list of calls to dial. All successes and failures are
recorded in the Modem Log.
2.5. PrimeLog
The PrimeWare software has 2 modes and the menu items are different in each
mode. The modes are Databas e mode and Survey mode, these are selected on
the Tools, Options menu. In Database mode the following menu items are
available: Edit, Readback, Program, Current System Info, AutoCal, Stop Logging,
GSM Powering and Psion Transfer. In Survey mode, the following menu items
are available: Readback, Program, AutoCal and Stop Logging. Each menu item
is described below.
On all screens the Program Now button programs the selected logger with the
parameters set in the various tabs. This feature only operates with loggers
which are connected locally.
CAUTION: Failure to select all parameters correctly may result in the logger
being programmed with the default values, or the values selected when the
logger was last programmed.
The New button allows a new number to be entered into the list.
(If the connected logger will accept only part of the programming
information (e.g. attempting to program a PrimeLog 2 as a PrimeLog
1F), then PrimeWare will ask whether to continue or abort.) If the setup
information is incompatible with the hardware (e.g. 4 channel
parameters being programmed into a 2 -channel logger) the
programming will be aborted.
section 2.5.4). The number should contain all codes needed to access
the logger (e.g. if an access code – such as 9 - must be dialled to
obtain an outside line, then the number should start 9,…)
Delete Site allows the current site details and all associated stored
data to be deleted. Caution must be exercised when using this function,
as once a site is deleted it cannot be restored. (This option is disabled
at the Standard level of access in PrimeWare.)
The GSM Modem option, when checked as shown, causes the GSM
Standby mode tab to appear. This feature is discussed in section
2.5.1.6
Data Type and Logging Interval are fundamental parameters, but note
that the logging intervals are pre-set. These are selected from a list, or
may be typed; an error message will appear if an invalid interval is
typed.
The logging modes are s elected from the box on the top right of screen.
There are four modes:
Cyclic logging allows the function to continue indefinitely, as
the latest reading overwrites the oldest record once the
memory is full.
Log for starts logging immediately the logger i s programmed
and continues for the specified number of days (max 100).
Stop when full is self-explanatory, and starts immediately the
logger is programmed.
Specific allows an exact logging period to be defined. The
default settings have the start time 15 minutes in advance of
the PC clock, and the stop time 24 hours later. Both times may
be edited as required. Note that if the start time is passed
before the logger is programmed, the logger will not be setup
successfully.
The Digital tab produces a dialog box which is similar to the analogue
parameter box. Naturally, a different range of sensors is available for selection.
FCAL (defined in the Glossary) is the specific value for the sensor in
use. Appendix 4 contains FCAL values for various types of sensor. If the
wrong value of FCAL is used, data read from the logger will be
erroneous. The value of FCAL can be corrected after data has been
logged using the Advanced Programming feature – see section 2.5.2)
The Setup Calibration button is only active for Combination meters and
for Quadrina Insertion probes. Setting calibration for a combination
meter is a matter of entering the FCAL factors for the Main meter and for
The Very low flows expected checkbox should be used with caution,
as it sets a special sampling mode,. This is explained in the warning
which is displayed if this option is checked:
"Setting this flag will set the sample period for the flow sensor equal to
the measurement interval, and should only b e used if the flow rate input
expected is less than 1 pulse/minute. Min/Max data cannot be logged if
this flag is set. Similarly this flag cannot be used with a Combination
Meter. The display of current flow under the System Information option
will update less frequently”.
The Reset Total Flow checkbox allows the totalising counter in the
logger to be reset (or not) when the logger is programmed.
The remainder of the Digital tab operates in the same manner as the Analogue
tab discussed in section 2.5.1.2. The Quick Program button sets a default
digital logging function. This is the same as the analogue function, except that it
is described as 15 minute avg cyclic flow (D1).
If the logger is configured for telemetry, then checking the Alarm Dial Out box will
cause the datalogger to make an alarm call when an event occurs, so providing
an immediate notification of on-site conditions. Up to four telephone numbers
may be programmed; if the logger fails to connect to the first number, it will call
the second and so on until it is successful.
It is normally recommended that GSM modems are only powered for short
periods of time to minimise power consumption. Naturally, communication with
the logger (in either direction) is only possible during these periods.
It is important that the time of first power-up is some time in the future, or
programming of the logger will fail.
It is necessary to plan the system operation when selecting the standby times
and duration. For example, the logger may be part of an Auto-Dial (see section
2.4.8) poll, so it is necessary to ensure that the poll occurs at a time when the
logger is available for communication. A recommended configuration is to have
the logger power its modem every 12 hours at 00:00 and 12:00, and for the poll
to occur at 00:00. (If a logger is communicating at the end of its power-up time,
the modem will remain powered until the communication ceases.)
The screen displays the data available from the datalogger. If the selected
datalogger was setup on the same system as is being used for readback, then
the descriptions of the available data will be that entered by the user (as this is
stored in the database), otherwise the default data description stored in the
logger will be shown.
When the data have been selected, a dialog box indicates progress of the data
transfer from the logger(s). All data retrieved are saved automatically in the
database.
On completion of the retrieval, the option is given to display the retrieved data as
a graph or report.
The logger information is read and presented on the Readback Survey Logger

can be edited (the serial number cannot be changed). The sensor type can be
selected as required, and the FCAL Value: Litres/Pulse and Units can be
changed as required.
The lower part of the dialog allows the filename for the saved data to be changed
as required, and the options to Stop logging after readback and Graph after
readback can be selected as required.
When the selections have been made the Read and Save button will start the
readback process. Communication of data from the logger is present on an
additional comms progress window.
Logger: Program
The screen allows previously configured sites stored in the database to be
selected for downloading to dataloggers. Loggers may be programmed
individually or in batches. To select several sites, hold down either Shift or Alt
when clicking on site names. (If loggers are connected locally, the user is
prompted to change the logger.) A batch of loggers must be programmed using
one mode of programming – in other words, it is not possible to mix local
programming and programming by modem in the same batch.
If the logger contains unread data, a warning notice is dis played to advise that
this data will be lost if programming is performed. When a logger has been

Clicking the Setup button retrieves and displays the system setup information in
the datalogger. This displays the current logging function(s), event status and
sensor selection.
2.5.7. AutoCal
AutoCal provides the facility to remove any transducer error immediately. As this
involves measuring the transducer output when it is sensing atmospheric
pressure (in other words, measuring the zero offset), this function should only be
performed if the transducer is not connected to pressure at the time when the
AutoCal is performed.
CAUTION: Use of this option in either mode causes the logger to ignore the GSM
standby times previously programmed. The only way to restore the GSM standby
times is to reprogram the logger.
This function may be invoked from the menu or from the Psion button on the
main toolbar. All selection and transfer of data is controlled from the host
computer.
The Workabout must be connected to the selected serial port of the PC using a
null modem or PC-to-PC cable. It is not important whether the transfer mode is
first selected from the Workabout or from the host computer, provided that both
selections are made within 10 seconds. As has been mentioned, the Comms
port used for the Psion transfer is configured from the Tools – Options menu.
Once communication is established between the Workabout and the host, all
the site information in the Workabout is downloaded and a list of sites available
for download is displayed. One or several sites may be selected for download,
using the data from one or more data channels at each site.
Once the selection has been made, the Transfer button causes the data to be
transferred; the host displays a status bar to indicate the progress of the
transfer.
NOTE: The data will be stored automatically in the directory specified in the
current data path, as set in the Tools – Options menu (see section 2.4.1)
Line Graph plots logger data as a continuous line of value against time.
Bar Graph is only available for data in Daily Logging format. Data are
displayed as a single bar for each daily value.
The Digital Units and Analogue Units selection sets the units of
measurement for flow and pressure. These units are used for all
graphs. To set units for individual graphs, refer to section 2.6.1.1
following.
If a data set is selected in error, click on its name to highlight it, then click on the
Remove button to de-select it.
Up to eight data sets may be selected for display at any one time.
The +/- button allows data to be added and subtracted to produce a new data set
which can be displayed with the other parameters if desired.
Include Ground Level allows pressure values to be displayed relative to the local
datum.

2.6.1.1. Units
The Units button beside each selection produces a dialog box which allows
values to be scaled, either by application of parameters held in the database or
by entering scaling values into the window.
The database parameters are those entered when editing the scaling in the
logger channel selection dialog boxes. Where applicable, the Add Ground Level
control permits the pressure readings to be compensated for ground height.
The Set Times button allows the start and stop times for each graph to
be specified. These times may be different for each source of data.
If all data are to be displayed with the same timescale, then the All start
and stop times the same ? checkbox should be selected, otherwise
the timescale for each graph may be set by pressing the Set Times
button. The Start and Stop times may be edited to select the time
interval to be displayed. The Overlay Graphs allows data with different
start and stop times to be plotted as overlays i.e. the graphs will be
displayed on top of each other.
The timescale defaults to that of the last graph produced, and the end
time defaults to the last time of the selected data.
The Trace Setup button opens a dialog box which allows the trace colours to be
selected and the axis for each trace to be determined.
The fourth screen (shown overleaf) allows the graph title to be changed from the
default setting, and allows titles to be entered for the Y-axes.
Note that by default flow is displayed on the left Y-axis and pressure on the right
Y-axis.
Toolbar buttons may be used to zoom and pan the graph, and to measure point
values. This toolbar is dockable.

Zoom left Y-axis: when selected, clicking the mouse on the graph and dragging
up or down produces a rectangular selection box (extending the full width of the
graph) which defines the section of graph to be zoomed
Zoom right Y-axis: operates in the same manner as the left Y-axis zoom.
NOTE: Only the appropriate axis zoom button is enabled. If two or more traces
are displayed, both buttons may be enabled. In such a case, zooming on a Y-
axis affects only the traces which are scaled from that axis.
Zoom selected zone: allows both time and Y-axes to be zoomed together. The
selection box is fully defined by the mouse movement, which selects both height
and width of the area to be zoomed.
This facility is shown active on the graph overleaf. For illustration, the value
display has been positioned at the bottom left o f the window, not on the graph.
Pan left and right: if there are more data points than can be displayed on
screen, move the start to left or right. The change in position is one half of the
displayed time - in other words, if the screen display shows tw o days of data, a
pan will change the start time of the display by one day.
Add text: allows any text to be typed over the graph. The mouse must be clicked
at the desired start position before typing. Pressing Enter completes text entry;
pressing Esc aborts text entry.
Move text: when selected, the text is surrounded by a box, which is dragged to
re-position the text. This option may be used to delete text. - select the text and hit
the Delete key.
Display Legend, which also works with the tabular display, shows the data
sources.
Produce tabular report: displays the on-screen data in the form of a tabular
report.
When a graph is displayed, pressing the right mouse button with the cursor o n
the graph presents a number of options:
Titles enables the titles of the main graph and the Y-axes to be edited.
Axis Font, Comment Font enables the fonts colour and appearance for
these texts to be changed.
Graticule controls the display of grid lines on the graph. The grid may
be associated with either Y-axis.
Time Setup selects the start and stop times of the d ata, and so allows
a larger or smaller timescale to be displayed.
Legend Setup permits the daily period over which statistical data is
calculated to be controlled. Statistics are calculated using data from all
displayed days in the specified daily period.
This menu also provides a Print Preview option, which gives an on-screen
display of how the graph will be printed.
The remaining report selection screens are i dentical in operation to those of the
Graph Wizard, except that the fourth screen allows the entry of Report Legend
Aliases. These are alternative titles for the columns of data. Not all screens are
required for some reports.
The example shows alarm events only, but the report may be of system events,
or of all events.

Most of the functions are self-descriptive, but note that the Display graph button
displays a graph of the data displayed on-screen in the report. To change the
amount of data displayed, change the font size.
Print preview displays reports as they will be printed. If data extend across
several pages, this feature allows the correct page of a multi -page report to be
selected for printing. This is the only way to select the correct page!
The sizes of fonts used when printing a report are normally set automatically, but
if the font sizes are changed by using the toolbar buttons then these font sizes
are used when printing. This controls the number of values which are printed on
a page.
Saved files contain data (rather than a representation of the graph/report), and
so are fully transportable. A saved file may be re-loaded and displayed in the
other format (i.e. a saved graph file may be displayed as a report) if desired.
2.7. Management
PrimeWare provides sophisticated functions for the management of data, both
recorded data stored in the database and site information.
The Update checkbox changes the default database path to the newly created
database. Note that there are no sites in a newly created database. Sites are
added using the Logger – Edit menu, as described in section 2.5
A warning is given if a merging site has the same name as an existing site.

Multiple sites may be deleted at one time by selecting several sites (hold down
Ctrl and click on site names in turn), then clicking Delete Site.
This screen allows a logger serial number to be associated with a GSM modem
phone number.
Once this has been done, when a site is created in Logger – Edit entering the
serial number of the logger will caus e the associated GSM phone number to
appear in the phone number field.
2.8. PrimeProbe
2.8.1. Overview
To prevent confusion, the following text will refer to the 'flow meter'. This refers to
the PrimeProbe, the AquaProbe2 and the AquaMaster2.
The flow meter transmitter head contains three integral data loggers allowing
either temporary or permanent monitoring of flow and pressure from a site,
without the need for an external data logger.
The integral data loggers allow logging of average flow and pressure (at two
independent measurement intervals) and flow total. A typical configuration would
be to have the first data logger recording flow and pressure at 15-minute
intervals and the second recording these values at 1 -minute intervals. The
second logger would only be interrogated and read back when more detail is

All values recorded by the internal data loggers are derived directly from the
measured flow velocity, so there will be no quantisation errors introduced by
converting to a digital output for an external data logger.
The top level menu item - 'Probe/Master' has a single menu item that allows
readback and limited programming of the flow meter transmitter head.
Data can be recovered either via a direct local comms link, or via the Radiopad
interface (provided this is fitted to the transmitter head).
The data selection s creen allows the selection of data to be recovered. Each
logger can be read back individually. The option is given to change the
measurement interval for each logger after read back. If this option is selected
all data for that logger will be destroyed after read back. On readback all data are
automatically saved into the database.
A further option allows selection for the time update. If the time is synchronised
with the PC before read back all data read back will be associated with this new
time. If the time is synchronised after read back all the data will be associated
with the time before update. A final option is available for not updating the time.
Graphing and reporting facilities for flow meter data are the same as for
PrimeLog data. Please refe r to the appropriate section of the manual for help.
When the data read is complete the Program Probe dialog shows the probe
serial number, Meter ID and allows the logging interval for data collection to be
set. If necessary the Synchronise Clock checkbox can be selected and if the time
is synchronised with the PC before read back all data read back will be
associated with this new time. If the time is synchronised after read back all the
data will be associated with the time before update.
The Logging Interval can be set to the required value between 15 seconds and
18 hours.
When the required selections have been made, clicking the Program button
sends the programming data to the probe.
Data can be recovered either via a direct local comms link, or via the Radiopad
interface (provided this is fitted to the transmitter head).
The dialog shows the probe Serial number and Meter ID, and allows various site
name and location information to be viewed and/or changed. The unit of flow can
be changed and various Pressure settings can be changed as required. The
Graph after readback checkbox will display the readback data in graph format.
Graphing and reporting facilities for flow meter data are the same as for
PrimeLog data. Please refer to the appropriate section of the manual for more
information.
3.PSION WORKABOUT®
PrimeLog V1.4x
This chapter documents the facilities and use of a Psion Workabout loaded with
PrimeLog V1.3 software.
For instructions on loading the software into Workabout, refer to section 3.4 at
the end of this chapter.
3.1. Introduction
The Psion Workabout is a robust handheld computer which provides a means of
accessing PrimeLog loggers through a serial link, and thereby is a rugged,
smaller and lighter alternative to a portable computer. A Workabout can retrieve
data from a logger, display data graphically and numerically, and can program
the input channels. Retrieved data can be subsequently downloaded to a PC-
compatible computer for archival storage and for analysis.
• Programming of dataloggers
• Readback of data from one or more channels, with option to select time
period
Psion Workabout
The standard configuration of Workabout has 1MB of internal memory and non-
rechargeable alkaline batteries.
3.2. Operation
3.2.1. Main Screen
PrimeLog V1.3
The Read, View and Program actions are those most commonly used, and so
are accessible directly from the main screen by pressing R, V or P respectively.
All other options are accessed by pressing the Menu key on Workabout. Note
that the Menu key is only active when the Main screen is displayed.
NOTE: It is essential (for data security) to return to the Main screen after
completing a series of operations with a datalogger and before attempting to
communicate with another datalogger or before powering down Workabout. It is
not necessary, however, to exit from the PrimeLog program before powering
down.
Pressing R causes Workabout to display the start and stop dates of data stored
in the Workabout database; the display is blank if no data is currently stored.
Pressing R again causes the retrieval of data from the datalogger; a progress
bar shows the proportion of data retrieved for each logging function. When
retrieval is complete the display is updated to show the start and stop times for
the data on each channel.
The option to view the stored data (average values only), as described in section
3.3.2, is given; alternatively, pressing Esc returns to the Main screen.
Pressing V causes Workabout to retrieve the current data and display the
channel type(s), the current value(s) and the total(s) as appropriate.
Pressing V again updates the display. This may be done as often as required,
subject only to the time to access and transfer current data.
To change from one to another, and to select individual options, use the (yellow)
cursor keys and the (yellow) Enter key. Alternatively, each option may be selected
by a ‘hot-key’ combination e.g. to read all data from a single site, use ∪ O (hold
down the large ∪ grey key - bottom left - and hit O).
3.3.1. Read
Read transfers data from the logger to the Psion. Various options allow
selection of the data and the channels to be read.
All channels (all data) retrieves all data stored in the datalogger. When the
option is selected, Workabout accesses the datalogger, then displays the start
and stop dates of data stored in the Workabout database. (The display is blank
if no data is currently stored.) Pressing R causes the data to be retrieved.

106 PrimeWare - PrimeLog System User Manual
Psion Workabout
The option to view the stored data (average values only), as described in section
3.3.2, is given; alternatively, pressing Esc returns to the Main screen.
All channels (since last read) operates in a similar manner, but the data which
is retrieved is limited to that which has not been previously retrieved.
One channel (all data) displays the available data in all channels, as previously
described. The required channel is then selected, using the up and down cursor
keys, then R is pressed to retrieve the data.
One channel (since last read) uses the same process of selecting the channel,
but only retrieves the data which has not previously been retrieved.
3.3.2. View
View allows data to be viewed for checking.
Current values reads data from the logger in real time. The display shows the
channel type(s), the value(s) and the total(s) where appropriate. The display may
be updated by pressing V.
Logged values may only be viewed after data have been read from the logger,
and displays the average data which has been retrieved from the current active
site. The site may be changed (for details refer to section 3.3.4).
Data from a single channel logger are presented directly. When viewing data
from a multi-channel logger, select the channel to be displayed by pressing the
appropriate number on the numeric keypad of Workabout.
Data is displayed as Time & Date with a value. Four values are displayed.
The on-screen menu offers three options - Graph, Position and Exit.
Position allows the time and data of the end of displayed data to be selected.
The Start and Stop times are displayed, and the New Date can be edited. Use
the left and right cursor keys to select the field to be changed, then use
Shift-á and Shift-â to change the value. Always hit Enter when the New Date is
correct - Esc exits without making changes.
Graph displays the data against time; 200 points are displayed. à or ß may be
used to scroll through the data; if a large change is required, exit to the main
View screen and use Position to change the start time of the data and then re-
display the graph. Esc exits from the graph display.
Min/Max and Total values may be selected only where the logger is set for this
mode of recording.
3.3.3. Program
Program allows the logging parameters to be changed, and the logger to be
calibrated.

datalogger. File ID is a four digit number, ranging from 0000 to 4095, which is
entered using the numeric keypad. Site name is a 32 character alphanumeric
field. Pressing Enter programs the data into the attached datalogger; a warning
message is displayed before transferring data.
To delete site details , select Delete. Sites currently stored in Workabout are
displayed with File ID and Time & date of last communication. Shift-á á or Shift-
â cycle through the sites.
Site - Delete
Pressing the Enter key displays a warning message; to proceed with the
deletion, press Y
Delete All (the D key) removes ALL SITES from Workabout – permanently! Again,
a warning message is displayed before deletion.
3.3.5. Special
The special functions are the transfer of data from Workabout to a PC,
configuring (initialising) a new solid state disk, and the ability to terminate the
Primayer program and return to the main Workabout menu.
Selecting PC file transfer passes control to the host PC computer, where the
data are selected. Workabout must be connected to the host PC via the RS232
port using a null modem or PC to PC cable. It is possible to abort the transfer by
hitting Esc.
Configure initialises a solid state disk for data storage. This must be done if a
new disk is inserted.
Note: Data is accessed from a solid state disk at a slower rate then from RAM,
because of the characteristics of solid s tate storage.
Note that if the program is exited it will be necessary to restart the PrimeLog
program, as described under Display at Switch-On, when Workabout is next
used.
1. Connect the Psion RS232 Port to port COM2 of the PC. Use a PC to PC
cable, also called a NULL modem cable - do not use a standard serial
cable. If COM2 is not available, see below for instructions on changing the
PC port.
2. In the System screen of the Psion (the one containing the icons), move to
the Special menu and select the Remote Link option. This screen will
probably say that the Remote Link is Off. Turn the Remote Link On, and set
the Baud Rate to 19200 and the Port to A. This allows the Psion to see the
PC which is transferring the files to it.
3. Press Enter to accept this screen, and move back to the PC.
4. Open a DOS prompt, change to the floppy drive and type install if the
software is being installed for the first time, or update if the software is
being updated.
5. This launches MCLINK, a Psion program which copies four files to the
Psion. It may take a minute or two to complete. When MCLINK has finished
move back to the Psion.
6. Select the Remote Link menu option again, and turn the Remote Link Off. If
in the System screen there is a PrimeLog icon and caption, then the
installation is complete. Otherwise the icon has to be installed. Move to the
Apps menu and select Install. One of the applications in the list to install
should be primelog.app. Select this to install, and the icon will appear on
the main screen.
NOTE: It may happen that the last command of the Install program displays an
error message on the PC which says File Already Exists, and allows selection
of Abandon or Continue. Using the Spacebar and Enter key select the Abandon
option. (This is simply the install program trying to create a directory which
already exists, so the error message can be ignored.)
1. Open a DOS prompt, change to the floppy drive, then type del mclink.trm.
2. After the file has been deleted type mclink. This starts MCLINK, the Psion
communication program.
