Journal of Research and Development in Education published Janice E. Williams’

article “Article Critique: The Relationship Between Efficacy for Self-Regulated Learning and

Domain-Specific Academic Performance, Controlling for Test Anxiety” in 1996. Williams’

goal is to establish if perceived efficacy for self-regulated learning is related to academic

performance. The author seeks to associate the change in test results when self-regulated

learning takes place and efficacy to performance between English, Mathematics, English, and

Science.

The research sampled 103 students, 57 females and 46 males. The students were

assessed on self-efficacy in learning and test anxiety. The students were monitored and after

that took a test in English, Mathematics, Reading, and science.

At the end of the research, William notes that students who were self-regulated

learners also had high academic attainments. In addition, self-regulated learners tend to have

less test anxiety. The research showed that self-regulated learners are better with verbal

content areas than mathematics. The author concludes that teachers should discuss with their

students and encourage them to use self-regulated learning techniques.

The research is relevant to modern education and the author does well explaining the

technique. However, he adopts a language that is too technical for most basic teachers to

comprehend. The research states that the students were all academically sound. This shows

that the results of the research are biased, teachers may not know if this learning technique

will improve academic performance and reduce test anxiety among struggling students.

Schools, teachers, pastors, and educational stakeholders should encourage and adopt

self-regulated learning techniques in their teaching and learning environment. There is room

for more research to be done on the subject matter. I believe every educational-minded

person should read this article.
