CHAPTER I

Background

With long hours and heavy works in school, it's easy to chased teachers by

having burnout. Without proper support and time to have a proper rest, teachers are

in danger of being overwhelmed of their works and not be able of taking care of their

own mental and physical health needs. The purpose of this research is to identify the

effects of teachers burnout on students learning and academic performances. The

primary research objective is to understand teachers burnout and how can students

avoid it to prevent affecting their academic learning. A focus on student performance

and learning is important when examining the effects that will provide much needed

clarity on how teachers burnout symptoms affect the students they are teaching.

From other studies, the understanding how teacher stress, burnout, coping

and self-efficacy are interrelated can inform preventive and interventiong efforts to

support teachers. In their study, they explored those constructs to determine their

relation to student outcomes(Twillie, Hickmon-Rosa & Reinke, 2017). However, this

study also provides evidences with regards to whether teacher burnout needs further

consideration in educational policy, especially in student’s well-being and how does

teacher’s stress and burnouts can affect their student’s academic performances and

how they learn inside the classroom. Teacher burnout and attrition affect student

achievement especially in academic. Academically, teachers burnout have negative

impact on student success because of unsteadiness in instructions and their

discussions. Teacher votality affects student motivation and enthusiasm for learning

so, it is important to identify teacher burnout before it has a chance to grow into a

larger problem.
Research Question

The aim of the study is to identify the effects of teachers burnout on students

academic learning. Specifically, this aims to answer the following:

1. What are the factors contribute to teacher burnout?

2. How does students assess teacher burnout affecting their academic

performances?

3. How do teachers perceive their burnout impacting interaction with students?

Significance of the Study

The group members acknowledged it was judicious to investigate and

understand teacher burnout and how it will affect the student's academic

performances as it could place a severe problem.

This study served as a significant contribution of the study was that other

schools can review the the result of the research and take a stance to look more

closely at their staffs and recognize ways they can deal with teachers stress and

burnout affecting it in student’s academic performance. The most significant

contribution is that the positive result and changes in which teachers are treated

like professionals by their institutions and given respect, support and opportunities

to grow and their concern for their student’s well-being and academic

performances.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of the research to be conducted for this will focused on how does

teachers stress would affect the student’s academic performance, how they learn

inside their classrooms and teacher’s experiences in their burnout and their
interaction with their students. The relation between the teachers adjustments,

student behaviors and academic outcomes will be conducted.

The study will be delimited to Villa Katrina, Pahinga Norte, Candelaria, Quezon

and bound by time March through April 2024.

Definition of Terms

This research endeavor aims to explore the factors of teacher burnout

affecting the student’s academic learning and performances. Thus, the following

terms in the study are defined operationally:

Self-efficacy refers to individual’s capacity to execute an individual’s behavior. The

confidence and self-assurance in a task.

Votality is the liability to change rapidly specifically for the worse. It is

changeable and and can have higher risks in our research.

In-depth is when comprehensively and thoroughly in great detail. Covering all

important points of a subject or a topic in investigations.

Attrition is a process gradually reducing the strength or effectiveness of someone or

something through sustained pressure. The decrease or reduction in numbers of

our student’s affect of teacher burnout.

Burnout is the state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by

excessive and prolonged stress. It is also the situation an educator can

experience in their work. They are unable to effectively complete their

professional responsibilities and tasks.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This literature review is focused on the phenomenon of teacher burnout. The

purpose of this literature review was to explore and understand teacher burnout by

focusing on contributing factors, how burnout impacts student learning and

performances, and the relation between the teachers and students.

The study begins with a description of the study’s background information, sarch

for the data and organize the gathered data. Relevant facts will be gathered that

supported by the hypothesis of social interaction.

The problem of teacher burnout is explored by highlighting the following

components: (a) the factors that contribute to teacher burnout, (b) how teacher

burnout and attrition impact student learning, and (c) how teacher burnout impact

their interaction with their student.

METHODOLOGY

Methodology

A qualitative case research design was chosen to guide this study on affect of

teacher burnout to student's academic performance. The purpose of this study is to

understand and define the factors that contributed to teacher burnout and how

burnout affected student learning and teacher interaction with their students. This

section states the research design for thus study. It also described the methodology

used to select participants and the instruments used to collect the data. The validity

and trustworthiness of data and data analysis are explained.

Research Design

The qualitative tradition that best suited this inquiry into teacher burnout was a

case study. A case study method was the appropriate research deign for this study

because each teacher and student participants was studied as an individual case.

The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that contributed to teacher

burnout and its impact on learning and communication with the students.

The case study approach supports intervention, deconstruction, and the

reconstruction of various phenomena (Creswell, 2012; Patton, 2014). Case study

research is designed to bring out details from the viewpoints of the participants and

can be exploratory, explanatory, descriptive, intrinsic, instrumental, or collective

(Maxwell, 2012; Yin, 2013). An exploratory case study design was selected because

this research was focused on the exploration of human behavior and individuals’

perspectives within a bound system: setting, time, population, and issue (Maxwell,
2012; Miles, Huberman, & Saldana, 2013)

In contrast, descriptive case studies were not appropriate because they

require descriptive theory to be developed before starting the study.

Phenomenological study was unsuitable because it focuses on an event and does

not necessarily focus on each individual’s experience.

Research Participants

The participants for the study is the Grade 11 HUMSS and Senior High School

teachers of Dolores Macasaet National High School. Participants will be brief fully

and encourage to ask questions for clarifications regarding the nature land purpose

of the study. The study will use qualitative approach to conduct data and identify the

effects of teacher burnout in student’s academic learning. The approach that we are

going to use is relevant to identify the effects of teacher burnout as it will let us seeks

an in-depth understanding of student’s experiences in their teacher’s burnout.

The approach that we are going to use is relevant to identify the effects of

teacher burnout as it will let us seeks an in-depth understanding of student’s

experiences in their teacher’s burnout. The study will give clear and deep perception

in teachers burnout and how it affects student’s academic learning. Also, how this

study will help students understand how teachers burnout is important and how it will

affect thwie success in life.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted in Dolores Macasaet National High School, Villa

Katrina, Pahinga Norte, Candelaria, Quezon.

Research Instrument
An important step in the process of conducting this case study research was to

implement a plan that was aimed at gathering solid information that drove the study.

Data will be gather using simple random sampling. The participants will be selected

from randomly picking in classroom’s students list. Data will be gather by having

structured questionnaires as the document to conduct the experiences. Worded in

specific way, we will ready a set of questions that the participants will answer

Data Gathering Procedure

As the study of the researchers; identifying the affect of teacher burnout in

student academic performance, they will employ the following procedures:

a. Researchers will go to the corresponding rooms and will look for the research

participants, in Grade 11 HUMSS and Senior High School teachers.

b. The researchers will brief the participants for what they are going to do and how

they will be participating in the study.

c. After the briefing, they can now proceed in to giving the research questionnaires in

the participants.

The questions were used to gauge the following signs of teacher burnout as

described in the other article: short on patience with students and colleagues and the

feeling of being overworked, overwhelmed, and not appreciated (Leiter & Maslach,

2011).

Teacher participants will also be one of the source for this study on teacher

burnout and the affect of it in student academic performance. Teacher participant will

be selected based on teacher availability and their desire to participate in the study.

To accommodate teachers who wanted to participate, times were arranged to

conduct the study before or after teacher’s working hours.

Data Analysis
One characteristic of data analysis in qualitative research is that analysis

occurs simultaneously with data collection (Bryman, 2012; Rubin & Rubin, 2012).

The categories identified included the factors that contribute to burnout,

burnout’s impact on classroom, and teachers’ social development. The narratives

accurately depicted the impact burnout played in participants’ everyday lives. Once

the data were analyzed and compared to the research questions, were categorized

and used to identify results. The participants’ perspective and answers, in some

cases, will be altered when the researchers will review the answers. Although each

case and perspectives was different, every case reflected some common results.
