OPENING CREDITS AND MONTAGE, STARTS FROM SHOTS OF NID


CAMPUS'S RELATION/LINKS TO UMRI VILLAGE CAN BE ANYTHING EVEN

NARRATING THIS STORY), THE HIGHWAY THAT STANDS BETWEEN US

ITS CULTURE AND PEOPLE, OBSERVATIONS FROM RESEARCH AND OTHER
B-ROLLS FROM SHIVRATRI AND KUSHTI.

Scene 1

Morning time. A small middle-class household in Umri


village, fodder kept on the side, household animals under a
shed or a small room nearby. There are earthen pots stacked
in a corner, with a traditional devi inscription beside it.
There is a potter's wheel and a hukka kept near them.

Nearby there is a Bed (chatayi) beside which a young boy is


playing with tractor and trucks wearing an unusually large
size chappal.

An old women (grandmother) is resting in a cot which is on


one side of courtyar peeling vegetables. A younger women is
boiling water using cow-dung-cakes for bathing. Constant
smoke is coming out of the lit fire, she is coughing. The
mother picks up some of the fodder and takes it to the
cowshed. Then rushes back to the kitchen.

MOTHER
Paras, ja balti le aa paani deungi.

Paras ignores her. His mother comes from inside with his
toothbrush with paste already applied on it, hands it over
to him. Then goes in brings a bucket. She pours water from
patila to the bucket, the mother carries it in brings and
next bucket filled with cold water pours it back onto the
patila
GRANDMOTHER
Suman, ya leya, aloo chil gaye

Paras is sitting on the motorcycle brushing his teeth. A


man (father) comes back home. Paras runs to him gives him
the chappal he is wearing runs back inside bare foot and
bring his own small size chappal. He has brushed his teeth

FATHER
Paani tatta(hot) nahane vaaste?

MOTHER
Ruk thoda abhi paras ko dia

FATHER
Paras nahane ja, tayiyar ho jldi.
Paras goes inside to take a bath. Conversation between
mother and father in background.

Paras returns after bathing

MOTHER
Suno ji, Kal phirse lard aaya
aapka laundah.

Mother is putting on socks and tying Paras' shoes.

FATHER
Oye, Tane phirse jhadga kyu karaya?

PARAS
Usne maane pehle maara, meri pencil
chura lie thi

MOTHER
Chal baad mein batayio, school ke
liye nikal baht dere ho rahi hai

Scene 2

INT. MONDAY MORNING- EST. SCHOOL

PARAS enters class, sits next to his friend, they start


talking while they take out stuff from their bags and start
settling ,both of them talking, TEACHER ENTERS

TEACHER(O.C)
Good morning baccho

KIDS
(Answer in unison)
Good Morning Maam jiiiii

TEAHER
Chalo beth jaao sab
EXT. LUNCH BREAK-12PM

BELL RING SOUND indicating break

kids running around, shouts, running sounds and giggling


makes the lunch break air, boys and girls playing games
establishing coed school

PARAS completes his work and gets up, is packing up, getting
out his lunch when he hears commotion from outside

FRIEND 2 (O.C)
Manne dekhya tune chori ki thi
(Kids shouting)

PLAYGROUND
PARAS RUNS OUTSIDE TOWARDS THE COMMOTION Sees a crowd
gathered around his bench partner and another classmate who
are in a fight

PARAS FRIEND
Pyaar se bol rahya hu, chup chap de
de, Shail ne dekhya tanne chori ki
thi

FRIEND 1
Yeh mera hai, mein nahi dunga

PARAS FRIEND
Manne maam ji ne bata dena, dede
chup chaap

FRIEND 1
Ja bhaag jaa maam ji ke paas, kayar
kahike

FRIEND 1 Pushes PARAS FRIEND on shoulder

PARAS FRIEND
Ab tanner chodunga nahi mein

PARAS FRIEND grabs FRIEND 1's collar angrily as children


around him try to hold hm back. FRIEND 1 punches PARAS
FRIEND.

PARAS-
Oye, dur ho jaa himmat kese hui
mere dost ko haath lagani ki

HE gets aggressive and starts pushing the other friend away,


overtakes the fight and gets the other one agitated. He
tries to grab his collar and is about to hit him.

FRIEND 1
Tu ku involve ho raha he madarchod

CROWD
Gasps, hawws in unison

KID 1
Paras dekh kya bol diya tujhe

KID 2
Tanne maa ki gaali de di isne

(Paras is confused by the crowds reaction but


angry/defensive)

PARAS
Kya bola tune mujhe, iska matlab
kya howa, bata mujhe
Friend 2 whispers in his ear

Paras panting, his facial expressions turn from angry to


horrified friend 2 takes over the fight, now because friend
1 gave the gaali and paras slowly disappears into the crowd.

FADE IN:

EXT. OUTSIDE SCHOOL GATE

Father is waiting outside school gate for Paras with his


bike parked next to him. He is arguing intensely on the
phone with someone.Old men sitting in the bg

FATHER
(Indistinct arguing)

The school is dismissed and Paras walks slowly towards the


gate and looks for his father only to find him arguing on
the phone(this is normalised for him, he gets a little
concerned(eyebrows).

FATHER (O.C.)
Dekh le bhai, soch le bahut bura ho
jayega, mereko gussa mat dila

Paras stands beside him waiting for him to finish, His


father is getting louder and more aggressive, Bystanders are
slowly becoming aware.

OLD MAN (O.C.)


Oh bhai school ke aage kya kar rahe
ho

FATHER ON PHONE
Abe sale, madarchod, teri haddi
todh dunga, bilkul bach nahi payega

The old man pushes the father, some men gather around

OLD MAN
Oh bhai! Zabaan sambhaal ke bolo,
yeh sab baccho ke samne kya kar
rahe ho!

(A few men agree)Paras looking worried and hides behind his


father, his grip on his school bag tightens

FATHER
Oh dada! Apne kaam se kaam rahko,
Chal beth Paras isko toh mein baad
mein dekhunga !

Paras gets on the bike, after a second takes of his school


bag as his father starts the bike and places it between him
and his father. He looks uncomfortable and in disbelief

EXT. VILLAGE (ON BIKE)

Paras stares into space as his father rides back home. The
sound of the overpowers the scene (Shots of him feeling
distant from father)

EXT. HOME

Father parks the bike outside the house, Paras quickly gets
off the bike run inside to see his mother. He stands between
his father and mother.

INT. HOME

Father talks to mother in hushed tones. He looks very


frustrated

FATHER

Mein todi der mein aata hun, inko seedha karke aata hu

MOTHER
Ha ji, sambhal ke rehna

Scene 6

MOTHER

INT. HOME

PARAS closely follows his mother from the gate to towards


her room where she was sitted sewing??

MONTAGE sequence

PARAS runs and hugs mother after a while of following


around, mother doesn't resist instantly but after a while
when her mobility was constrained she gets annoyed

MOTHER
Oho paras, kya hua aaj tujhe jaana
de mujhe bohot kaam he
(brushes him aside)
Mother tries to throw him off his following act by playing
along, blocking his way and stopping in between at places to
see how far he'd go with the following.

EXT. MARKET

Mother is out for grocery shopping, paras stands between the


crowd and her- trying to intimidate people. His posture
remains a puffed chest, hands on waist, furrowed brows.

Mother is in the bg observing paras and his peculiar


behaviour, she is amused by it and finds it funny initially
but it starts to get to her.

EXT. FIELDS
Mother is cutting grass in th evening in her land, she uses
a sharp tool to cut through the blades and then stacking
them on her head with someone's help. She carries it back to
her home and on her way also talks to Paras, shows him
things on the way, maybe birds or about crops itself.

Paras looks at her and is fascinated by the recieved info.

He slowly walks along her instead of ahead of her

Long shot of both silhouettes walking/skipping alongside,

INT. HOME

Paras helps mom give ghaas to the cattle as she also sings a
folk song and encourages him to do the same.

Rest of the montage is her singing parts of the song in a


sequence

Song continues,

Maybe he doesn't want to directly tell her what has happened


so he tries to ask questions?

Following her in her day-

- grass cutting

- boiling water

- getting groceries

- while making food

- tells him a story about dealing with anger? Or a story to


cheer him up
