1. Archeological sites:
Cat Ba Island - which is known as the terrestrial paradise since primitive times, has
undergone excavations and found a lot of precious archaeological sites. In archaeological
documents, scientists have confirmed that Cat Ba is one of the places where humans
appeared more than 6000 years ago, quite early compared to other areas. In which, the
largest relic is also the place where the most ancient relics are found, which is in Cai Beo
area. Many relics are made of cobblestone, or crude ceramic material from clay and sand.
Fossil remains of human corpses were also found along with evidence of their
whereabouts. Cai Beo settlement belongs to the ancient Ha Long culture that existed
6473-4200 years ago. According to folklore about Cat Ba island, these were the first
people who came to occupy the northeastern waters of Vietnam to exploit the sea and
cultivate.
There are 67 caves containing paleontological and archaeological remains found in Cat
Ba archipelago such as: Ang Giua, Tien Duc (Viet Hai commune), Gieng Ngoe cave (Cat
Ba town), Ang Ma and Mai cave clusters. Ong Bay rock (Hien Hao commune) all have
the same material culture content as Hoa Binh cultural sites in the mainland and Soi Nhu
site on Ha Long bay. These inhabitants of Hoa Binh culture live in a continental
environment, they exploit snails in freshwater environments to eat. At the sites of Hoa
Binh culture on Cat Ba island, stone tools are rarely found, mainly saw blade sharpening
pebble tools, disc shaped pebble tools made from Hoa Binh - Northern style pebbles.
Paint, in addition to the presence of tools made of native limestone (base stone). In
general, the sites belonging to Hoa Binh culture on Cat Ba archipelago usually have not a
thick cultural layer and only one layer of culture, proving that the residence time is not
long.
This has proved that the class of residents residing on Cat Ba archipelago in particular
and the Northeast coastal region in general belonging to the late stage of Hoa Binh
culture are the ancestors of the inhabitants of Ha Long and Cai Beo cultures. Later. In the
Hoa Binh cultural sites on the Cat Ba archipelago, there are certain traces of the use of
fire: coal stoves with ashes, fragments of animal bones with bruises, and stones with
black smoke. The piles of freshwater snail shells pierced, the bones of animals were
chopped and smashed, allowing it to be confirmed that the ancient people here gathered
and hunted.
3. Festivals:
According to ancient custom, from the morning of March 30 every year, in Cat Ba (Cat
Hai district) will hold a ceremony to pray for fish, launch the army to catch male fish,
release fingerlings and launch a movement of people to protect and development of
aquatic resources. The fishing festival takes place with solemn rituals, praying for a year
of favorable rain and wind, and the most effective harvest and aquaculture season. A
large number of officials and people of the island district attended the fishing ceremony,
especially the fishermen who directly went to the sea, held water processions and
sacrifices with good wishes. The second festival is Cat Ba Festival that takes place from
the 4th to the 10th day of the first lunar month. At this time, the locality will restore the
original state of the village festival in the past. You will be captivated by the atmosphere,
festive sounds, hand-crafted contests, intelligence and Dum singing.
Besides, in recent years, sea carnivals are regularly held to promote tourism and attract
domestic and foreign tourists to Cat Ba.
4. Folk culture: lễ hội hát Đúm
As mentioned above, at the Cat Ba festival, which takes place in the first lunar month
every year, there will be a part of the Dum singing festival. Starting to sing Dum is also
the time when the girls of General Phuc took off their scarves and covered their faces
throughout the year. And this festival is also known as the opening festival. On this day,
village boys and girls gather at Phuc Le communal house which is the big communal
house of the village. They will sing songs and love songs. The cultural feature in Dum
singing is preserving the folk songs imbued with the national folklore of the homeland.
They sing about love, about the desire of a couple to be in harmony and bond for a
hundred years. The very polite costumes of the boys and girls in the Dum singing village
show a solemn and respectful look in the meeting in the festival. A certain boy or girl
who has not had "charm", also thanks to this Hat Dom festival, chooses to send gold to
each other. Not only singing Dum takes place in the communal house, but also in the
fields, on the empty fields or on the way, they can also turn it into a stage where they can
voice their enthusiasm and search for a life partner.
Although the origin of Dum singing comes from Thuy Nguyen area, not Cat Ba island, it
is still an outstanding folk song, performed at the annual Cat Ba festival, impressing
many guests when visiting Cat Ba.
