Background:

COMPUTER SYSTEM MAINTENACE PROCEDURE

A computer system is a set of integrated devices which takes input, process it and give output. Also it store
data and information. Computer system allows users to input, manipulate and store data. Computer systems
include a CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse and other optional components.

A. PC SYSTEMS
Common Computer Maintenance Procedures
There are a number of things that can be done to maintain your computer. Here is the description of typical
computer maintenance procedures:

Computer Cleaning

All computer hardware should be cleaned regularly, dust is a number one factor when it comes to computer
faults arising, getting under processor fans causing processor fans overheat, leading to a damage processor.
Another common factor of computer hardware failure is dust clogging up in the power supply.
You should not remove the side panels from your computer if you are not confident enough. Never use a
device such as a hoover to clean the insides of your computer, vacuum cleaners generate a high amount of
static electricity which can shorten the life, or damage the components inside your computer system. The best
option for doing this is to use a can of compressed air.
In computers where the dust build – up may have been for a number of years the heat sink compound may
require replacing, this should not be done by the casual computer user as processors are expensive, fragile
and easy to damage. In this case an alcohol based solution, or heat sink remover should be used to thoroughly
clean existing heat sink paste from the processor. Fresh heat sink compound should be then re-applied.

Ensuring all cables are secured and not obstructing air – flow will also help keeping the computer temperature
to a minimum.
Hard Drive Maintenance

There are a few things that are part of computer’s hard drive maintenance, such as checking enough space
exists for the system to run at optimal performance; checking the drive for errors (both software and
hardware) and defragmenting the hard drive. Software errors on a hard drive caused by in proper system
shutdown can cause a computer system not to boot.
Anti – Virus, Privacy and Security Software

Utilizing privacy software and anti-virus ensures the privacy of you and your information on your computer.
Good privacy and anti -virus software also cleans up your computer, prevents unauthorized installation of
software (spyware, adware, and malware), causes less programs to access the internet - and as a result
speeds up your internet connection. Keeping your anti - virus software up-to -date should be a critical part of
any computer maintenance plan.
Updating Windows

An important part of your daily computer maintenance routine should be keeping your software (windows,
anti-virus, etc.) up-to-date, ensuring the latest security patches and application updates are installed,
available and running properly.
Updating your windows operating system is very important! Microsoft releases security fixes at a rapid rate.

B. COMPUTER OPERATIONS

Oversee maintenance and operation of computer hardware systems.

Control console of mainframe digital computer or set of minicomputers,
Set control on computers and peripheral devices.
Run computers tasks.
Maintain logbooks or records for job runs.
List malfunctions that occur during shift.
Perform maintenance tasks such as checking for viruses, backing up tape, upgrading software, and other
basic maintenance.
Assist programmers and analysts with testing and debugging new programs.
Monitor systems remotely.
Watch closely for error lights.
Locate and solve other malfunctions.
Load files onto storage media.
Help network administrators ensure network connections are in place.
Ensure network and servers are functioning properly.
Connect computer peripherals for users.
Help new employees get their computer running.
Clear equipment at end of operating run and review schedule.
Notify supervisor or computer maintenance technicians of equipment malfunctions.
Retrieve, separate and sort program output as needed, and send data to specified users.

C. ELECTRONIC FAULTS FINDINGS

Basic Fault Finding Guide

Here are some simple fault finding techniques that you can try.
We suggest that you thoroughly recheck the circuit again using the sequence detailed below.

Page | 2
1. Check that all components are in the correct position and orientation.
2. Check that there are no short circuits (excessively high current drain on the power supply may indicate
shorts). Examine the PCB for solder splashes across pads/tracks and stray component leads/wires.
3. Carry out some basic electrical tests to ensure power is reaching all parts of the circuit.
4. Check all components are functioning correctly. Has overheating during soldering damaged any
components? ICS and transistors are particularly susceptible.
5. Remove and test suspect components using appropriate test equipment. Alternatively, substitute dubious
components with tried and tested ones.
6. Make through check circuit voltages/currents/signals using appropriate test equipment.
7. Where kits are connected to other equipment check for compatibility problems by testing on alternative
equipment.

By adopting a systematic approach to fault finding you will eventually discover where the problem lies. If you
wish to learn more about the design and testing of electronic circuits we recommend that you explore the
extensive range of books and magazines that are available on the subject.
Please note that we are unable to provide specific help or advice on design modifications or adaptations of
project kits for individual customer applications.
Fault finding can be quick and easy or a case of time, effort and perseverance. It may (and will) be frustrating
at times but it really is one of the best teachers, providing you with a greater knowledge.
