(Exploratory Course)
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our
dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall
guide you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson
prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on
lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on
completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity
and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, notes to the
Teacher are also provided to our facilitators and parents for
strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary
marks on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty
in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult
your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Let Us Learn!

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the basic concepts and procedures on how to maintain
computer equipment and systems. The scope of this module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are also arranged to follow
the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

This module has one lesson:

• Lesson 1- Maintain Computer Equipment and Systems

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. undergo systems cleaning, minor maintenance, and replacement of

consumables (TLE_IAEPAS912PCO-lg-8.1.1);
2. implement procedures for ensuring security of data, including regular
backups and virus checks (TLE_IAEPAS912PCO-lg-8.1.2); and
3. perform basic file maintenance (TLE_IAEPAS912PCO-lg-8.1.3).

Let Us Try!
How well do you know about the topic? Let us try to find out how much
you know about maintaining computer equipment and systems by identifying
the following statements below if True or False. After answering this, you may
check the answers at the last part of this module.

INFORMATION SHEET

Congratulations! You have done a great job! Now you ready to learn on
the basic steps on how to maintain computer equipment and systems. Keep
up the good work!

Basic Computer Maintenance

Computer maintenance and

systems cleaning are routine activities
conducted in computers to keep it
working properly and its entire system
run more smoothly. These practices
can keep computers run longer and
avoid the damage potential parts and
expensive repairs and eventually
reduce the risk of break down.

Photos taken personally by Agnes Marian Alolor

Maintaining computer equipment and systems by cleaning your

computer’s hardware and software is important since it will not only protect your
computer hardware and increase its life span but also the data stored on it as
well.
Routine maintenance which is also known as Preventive maintenance is
performed on a regular basis to keep computer in top shape, to keep things
working well and reduce the chance of something to wrong while using it.

This type of maintenance must be given attention regularly since computers

are made up of many moving parts that get hot during its usage. If this is so, the
condition may result for the metal to expand and then contract while cooling
down again which will eventually promote unavoidable wear and tear to the
different parts of the computer. And unfortunately, after many times of use will
cause the computer parts to fail.
Dust and debris can clog computer fans and ports which reduces air low,
forms a “blanket” on internal components that traps heat, and prevents hardware
from maintaining a solid connection.

4
Desktop computers are generally very easy to clean since it has parts
that can be detached like the removable side panel or removable front panel
that comes off with just a few screws. Once separated , cleaning is as easy as
taking a compressed air or a vacuum on it to blow air outwards from the
inside.
Laptops, unlike desktop computers can be more quite challenging since
most people cannot thoroughly clean the parts because its computer parts
are not removal or cannot be taken off easily.

Procedures in Basic Maintenance and Systems Cleaning

To keep your computer’s in good shape, perform the following key tasks
after turning off and unplugging your computer. It is also necessary to allow
all parts to cool down and be handled delicately when cleaning.

A. Clean your computer regularly.

Computer keyboard

Procedure:

1. Unplug the keyboard.

2. Turn the keyboard upside down.
3. Shake it to remove dirt and dust.
4. Blow compressed air to clean
between the keys.
5. Clean the top of the keys using
soft cloth. Photos taken personally by Agnes Marian Alolor
6. Reconnect the keyboard to the
computer once it is dry.

5
Computer Screen/Monitor

Procedure:

1. Unplug the computer screen.

2. Wipe with a soft cloth.
3. Let it dry.

D. Move the computer only when it

is turned off and unplugged.

E. Do not shut down your computer

too often.

7
There are also other essential activities to do to keep the computer
running smoothly, to minimize system crashes caused by software problems,
to secure the system against viruses and other malware, and prevent data
loss. The following are:

1. Back up your files.

Save or copy your documents, videos, and other data using a CD or
DVD, an external hard drive, and thumb drives.
2. Do a full scan for viruses.
Scan your computer regularly to keep it safe from viruses and
malicious software. Also, regularly update your anti-virus to combat
new viruses and protect your computer.
3. Delete temporary files.
Remove unnecessary files to increase space and enhance speed and
performance of your system.
4. Update your programs and applications.
This will help improve the stability and security of the software,
remove outdated features, and increase better user experience.
5. Uninstall programs and applications you no longer use.
To add hard drive space and increase computer speed.

How to ensure security of data:

1. Use strong passwords and change it

regularly.

2. Do not share your password to others.

Photos taken personally by Agnes Marian Alolor

8
3. Check regularly if the computer is
affected by a virus.

4. Update the operating system,

programs, and applications.

Photos taken personally by Agnes Marian Alolor

5. Regularly back up important files.

You may use an external hard drive, a

CD/DVD or a flash drive.

Photos taken personally by Agnes Marian Alolor

In backing up your files using an

External hard drive, you typically
connect the drive to your computer
or laptop with a USB cable.

Once the drive is connected, you can

choose individual files or folders to
copy onto the external hard drive.

In the event you lose a file or a

document, you can retrieve copies

from the external hard drive.
