I think the Fabunan antiviral injection is not a valid cure for COVID-19 or any viral infection as
believed by many people. The proponents of the invention describes the vaccine as a formulation of pro-
caine hydrochloride, USP, combined with dexamethasone sodium phosphate, USP. These agents are, in
no way, drugs that have any proven antiviral properties as they are only an anesthetic and a steroid re -
spectively. However, Dr. Fabunan claims that the combination of these two drugs in a specific ratio pro-
duces a certain kind of alcohol (DEAE) that selectively kills the virus in the body. As a nursing student
who studied biochemistry and a little bit of pharmacology, I firmly believe that this drug’s claim as a
“cure-all” for the common viral infections we are battling in the Philippines is highly suspicious and
likely to be proven false sooner or later.

Analyzing it further, I believe the reports that many people who received the vaccine recovered
from their illness were merely due to the fact that the steroid component of the vaccine worked to sup-
press the inflammatory reactions of the body that would have otherwise blown up as a response to the in-
fection — a reaction that was erroneously interpreted as the patient healing and becoming better. We all
know that steroids are immunosuppressants and they function to halt the mechanisms such as the inflam-
matory processes that help the body fight against the invading pathogens. Not only is the use of this an -
tiviral injection useless on a scientific and medical bases but it is also unethical and morally unjustifiable,
as it can lead to further detriment for the patients’ medical conditions. It would be like adding further in-
sult to the injury as the steroid component in the concoction would bring the patient’s immune defenses
down and would put him at even more risk for even more serious infections, and us, people in the health-
care field, blindly advocating for such treatment would be promoting maleficence thereby violating our
oath of doing no harm to our patients.

Lastly, with all the humble knowledge and moral principles that I have as a nursing student and a
well-meaning human being to my fellow people I am confidently and strongly opposing the use and
proposition of the Fabunan Antiviral Injection as a cure for CoVid19 or any other viral infections for that
matter, as no proven or even rational scientific explanation could ever possibly account for the purported
mechanisms of action claimed by the inventors of such drug.
