Course Objectives:
The objective of this course is to introduce the students about the application of semiconductor devices in linear analog circuits. This course is to familiarize the
students with the analysis and design of circuits by using transistor, FET and operational amplifier. Detail analysis of biasing techniques, frequency response
compensation, feedback, stability, noise, and nonlinearity and introduction to advanced analog technique is presented including the topics on PLL, VCO,
multivibrators and wave form generators.

Prerequisites: Basic Electronics Engineering

Course Contents / Syllabus:

Module I: Small Signal Analysis of Transistors 25% Weightage


Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT):

• Hybrid model at low frequencies-analysis of transistor amplifier using h parameters


• emitter follower
• Miller’s theorem
• CE amplifier with an emitter resistance.
• Multistage amplifier: cascading of amplifiers
• coupling schemes (RC coupling and Transformer coupling).
Field effect transistor (JFET, MOSFET):
• Small signal model – common drain, common source, common gate, operating point
Module II: Amplifiers with feedback and Power Amplifiers 10% Weightage
• Analysis of feedback in Amplifiers (Voltage Series, Voltage Shunt, Current Series and Current Shunt)
• Power dissipation in transistors, difference with voltage amplifiers
• Amplifier classification (Class A, Class B, Class C, Class AB)
• class AB push pull amplifier
• collector efficiency, cross over distortion
Module III: Operational Amplifiers and Applications 25% Weightage
• op-amp parameters (input offset current, output offset current, i/p bias current, CMRR, PSRR, null
adjustment range, etc.
• Current mirrors, active loads, level shifters and output stages
• Applications – adders, voltage to current, current to voltage converter
• integrators, differentiators, voltage follower (voltage buffer)
• summer, subtractor, comparators
• log/antilog circuits using Op-amps, precision rectifiers
Module IV: Waveform Generation and PLL 25% Weightage
• Barkhausen criterion, tank circuit generator
• Types of oscillators: LC - Hartley and Colpitts (RLC based). RC - RC phase shift and Wien bridge
oscillator
• 555 Timer - schematic & pin configuration and Multi-vibrator- Monostable, Bistable and Astable.
• phase locked loops, VCO
• Crystal oscillator
Module V: Active and Passive Filters 15% Weightage
• Idealistic & Realistic response of filters (LP, HP, BP, All Pass & Notch), Passive filters (RLC based)
• Active filters (Op-amp based)–Butterworth & Chebyshev approximation filter function (LP, HP, BP,
All Pass & Notch)
• Operational transconductance amplifier (OTA)-C filters.

Course Learning Outcomes:


• Identify and describe operation of semiconductor devices.
• Ability to attain knowledge on theories, methods and applications related to semiconductor devices
• Analyze where and how analog components are used
• analysis of amplifier circuits using small - signal equivalent circuits to determine various parameters
• Construct OP-AMP/BJT application based circuits

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:


The course would be covered under theory and laboratory. In addition to assigning project–based learning, early exposure to hands-on design to enhance the
motivation among the students. It incorporates designing of problems, analysis of solutions submitted by the students groups and how learning objectives were
achieved. Continuous evaluation of the students would be covered under quiz, viva etc.

• To design low pass, high pass and band pass filters using op- amp. and plot their frequency response
• To design RC phase shift and Wein bridge oscillators using op amplifier
• To study the IC-555 timer as stable and bistable multivibrator.
• To design a ramp and a square wave generator using Op-amp IC 741
• To design voltage series feedback amplifier
• To design precision rectifiers using operational amplifier
• To design and study class-B push pull amplifier
