La Biennale di Venezia for carbon neutrality

In 2021, La Biennale di Venezia launched a plan to reconsider all of its activities in light of
recognized and consolidated principles of environmental sustainability.

For the year 2022, the goal is to extend the achievement of “carbon neutrality” certification, which
was obtained in 2021 for the 78th Venice International Film Festival, to all of La Biennale’s
scheduled activities, which include the 59th International Art Exhibition, the Theatre, Music and
Dance Festivals and the 79th Venice International Film Festival.

La Biennale is developing a plan of action for all these events, aiming at this point not only to
monitor its environmental impact, but to reduce it by orienting its choices towards a more
sustainable model.

The plan will thus work in parallel on other environmental factors as well, which are defined by
more than just the carbon footprint: from the efficient consumption of resources, to integrating the
principles of a circular economy.
The areas of concern have been identified, as have the specific interventions to reduce emissions
and, more in general, to scrupulously manage the environmental impact profile for all its activities.
For example:
 Reuse of materials and choice of recyclable materials for the exhibition
 Use of electric power generated exclusively from certified renewable sources
 Introducing criteria of sustainability in tenders for suppliers
 Guidelines and instructions on the theme of environmental sustainability for the national
participations
 Environmental impact awareness campaign for the public and guests

The aim is to reduce the emissions generated by the events and therefore the need to offset: but
achieving this aim requires the contribution of all the parties who make this possible, and in
particular the participating public.
La Biennale has taken on and will take on this responsibility, but everyone has been and will be
asked to collaborate actively through virtuous behaviour, certain that we share a common
awareness.
This is a path that La Biennale is undertaking with a great sense of responsibility, and which will
be certified by an international agency qualified for this purpose in the hope that this will set an
example for other cultural events, and more in general, spread the culture of sustainability across
our country and the world.
