GE Healthcare CSE IB/NPI SMARTSCORE Installation / Service Manual
1. INTRODUCTION
This manual provides an overview of the installation processes for the SmartScore AW advanced application
software option. The SmartScore application is designed to run on the GE AW platform continuum. This guide
makes references to all the appropriate standard Advantage Workstation service manuals for more detailed
information about installing an advanced application software option on the AW. The current revision of the
appropriate AW Service Manual should be used when installing this software.
This revision of this manual is released with and for the SmartScore 4.0 and forward revision product.
Because of the now relatively long history of the SmartScore product, there are legacy revisions of
SmartScore (pre-4.0) in the INSTALLED BASE that can and will exist. SmartScore 3.3 should be the
earliest revision in the INSTALLED BASE (3.3 replaced 3.2 with a now terminated FMI). The various
installation and service processes in these legacy SmartScore revisions that deviate from the current and
standard advanced applications service requirements can be found in this direction in section 9 entitled
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS.
Be sure to read section 9 for the revision of SmartScore that you have, especially if dealing with a legacy
(pre-4.0) revision of SmartScore.
2. INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
2.1 INSTALLING AW ADVANCED APPLICATIONS
1. Identifying the Global Order Number (GON) for the purchased software option, and
identifying the host-Id or license-ID of the AW that the option is to be installed on - if it
is to be enabled at this time.
• The option - as well as all purchased AW options - should come with
paperwork that may include one or more license key number strings. The
license will be in one of two forms:
o Either in the “default” aw license key form (an 8 to 10 digit number string)
– relative to SmartScore revisions up to and including SmartScore 3.5
o Default license string name - SmartScore
o Example default license - 3945160921
o Or, the newer “CoLA” aw license form (a 16 digit alpha-numeric license
string) – relative to ss4.0 and forward
o CoLA license string name – SmartScore_40
o Example CoLA license - 4R9SU2OLRB39GKZH
a) These license key numbers are calculated from the AW system’s license-ID
and can only be created if the following 2 data points exist:
• The Global Order Number for the purchased option.
• The license-ID of the target Advantage Workstation.
b) The software package may include a portable media device with the license key
information on it if the license(s) have already been created. This media might
also be blank - if the license(s) were not created in advance.
Additionally, the license key information will be available (or can be created) online
at the eLicense website link by searching under the Global Order Number or the
workstation’s license-ID: http://elicense.gehealthcare.com/elicense/
d) If there is a portable media license key device, it can be used during the Easy
Install software installation to enable the application software. The media device
should be inserted - then launch Easy Install – then click on INSTALL in the Easy
Install Graphical User Interface (GUI). The license key pop-up window should
appear with the key string filled in – then click OK.
e) If the license data is found (or created) on eLicense, it can be written down and
typed in as in item (c) or saved to portable media device for use as in item (d).
3. Loading (only) the CDROM application software package to the hard disk for future
use. The load should commence if INSTALL is clicked, the license key pop-up field is
not selected (left as is), no license media is installed, and OK is clicked.
Note:
• AW up through AW4.0 uses a CONFIGURATION FLOPPY (Informational only).
• AW4.1, 4.2 & 4.3 use a CDROM CONFIGURATION media while also supporting a
LICENSE floppy.
• AW 4.4 and forward will use a CDROM CONFIGURATION media, but will also employ
a USB-Flash-Drive as a portable “LICENSE” media – NO floppy support.

eLicense treats AW4.2 and AW4.2P as the same platform – that is, eLicense only allows
selection of AW4.2 for license creation.
However, when the SmartScore 4.0 application cdrom is installed, the ADMIN > INSTALL
PACKAGE > CDROM CONTENTS screen will state something to the effect:
This “logo” requires a graphic file in one of two formats – GIF (Graphics Interchange
Format), or JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format. All other size, color, and
quality aspects of this file are up to the user to manipulate.
To install the “logo” file, simply save the logo file to a location in the AW file system, or on
a cdrom media. In the Preferences tab single click on the current logo, or the “BROWSE”
button below it. A browser window will appear which will allow the selection of the logo file
from the cdrom, or from navigating the file system. Select the file name, then select OPEN,
and the new logo will appear.
NOTE: Some Pre-SmartScore 4.0 revisions may use a floppy media instead of a cdrom.
For remote functionality or for an alternative to the easy install tool, there are command-
line installation and un-installation scripts available in /export/home/sdc/install
These install scripts will only exist IF SmartScore has already been loaded on the AW at
some time. The initial installation has to be done via the Install Package / Easy Install tool
with the application cdrom.
• uninstall.sscore Un-install & retain SmartScore files for future hard disk install.
If the following window pops up, you probably have selected the wrong media, or the
concerned drive and or media might be defective:
Notice
! Malformed package
Notice
! Error : Cannot access to media
If the following window pops up, you probably have a wrong or defective license key,
and or media:
Installation Failed with ERROR CODE 30
SmartScore and AW System errors can be examined and investigated in either the usual AW
error logs – such as /var/adm/messages, and/or ~sdc/logfiles/EasyInstallLog - and also
in the application’s dedicated logfile:
/export/home/sdc/logfiles/sscorelog
With regard to SmartScore 4.0 “basic launch” testing there is something new: SmartScore
calculates the mass of calcification in the coronary vessels, which is a risk predictor of possible
coronary problems. In order to do this, the software requires a co-relation factor between pixel
intensity and the density of calcium. To establish this, the user scans a QRM calibration
phantom to calibrate this relationship.
If this calibration factor is not present when the “launch testing” is done (as when using the
DEMO exams), a pop-up will be presented asking the user to first select the patient size. For
this purpose, any patient size selection will work. Then click APPLY to the default values in the
‘Calibration’ pop-up window. A default calibration will be applied, and SmartScore should
launch successfully.
All current SmartScore revisions (3.3 through 4.0) will use whatever postscript and or dicom
printers successfully configured on the AW platform on which SmartScore is installed. There
are no printer configuration processes to establish, save, or restore within the SmartScore
application. The installed devices are detected and available for use. If SmartScore does not
detect an expected printer, there is likely an issue with the installation of that device on the
platform.
9. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
9.1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter is meant to provide installation and service information about the various legacy
SmartScore revisions in the INSTALLED BASE. For the purpose of this manual, “legacy”
SmartScore revisions are defined as PRE-SMARTSCORE 4.0.
This information is not intended to replace the standard AW advanced applications installation
details in the AW SM. It is intended to provide information about the various SmartScore
revisions, their particular considerations, and their deviations from one another and the AW
SM.
The base INSTALLED BASE SmartScore legacy product is SmartScore 3.5. ALL
SmartScore installations should be ‘at least’ at the latest 3.5 revision for the platform.
This manual (this section) supports SmartScore revision 3.3 only because the
SmartScore 3.3 to SmartScore 3.5 upgrade was not mandatory. Rather, it was deployed
via an “ON-DEMAND-No-Charge-SmartScore-INSTALLED BASE-Upgrade-CAT” (B79971JD)
for current SmartScore 3.3 customers only. It was, and is (if still needed) a “SALES” tool
that needs to be ordered by sales, service cannot order this catalog.
For this reason, and because there are real service functional differences between all the
SmartScore revisions – this section will deal with the legal legacy INSTALLED BASE revisions
of SmartScore at the time of this writing: Revision 3.3, and 3.5. Each sub-section will attempt to
cover installation and service information relevant to that particular revision. There will
unavoidably be some overlap.
SmartScore 3.3 does not support the “PRE-LOAD” option in easy install (installation to the
hard disk without a license key), and can only be installed from cdrom. SmartScore 3.3
should be replaced with at least revision 3.5 whenever it exists – B79971JD.
SmartScore 3.3 configuration files can only be saved within the SmartScore application -
in the ‘Preferences’ options - or by individually saving the unix/solaris files in the
SmartScore file system (not detailed in this document).
Example SmartScore 3.3 Configuration Service dependencies scenarios
• Re-load of SmartScore software only
o Save & Restore files within SmartScore preferences options.
• AW platform Re-load
o Save & Restore SmartScore files within SmartScore preferences options.
o Save & Restore AW configuration on AW platform
If the easy-install process will not work, for whatever reason (like remote service
intervention) - Manual command line install and uninstall scripts can be used.
Command-line install/uninstall scripts are located in /export/home/sdc/install
• install.sscore ########## (valid SmartScore license key)
• uninstall.sscore
ALERT
The SS3.3 uninstall.sscore script LOSES the SmartScore configuration and logo
files. Save them first in SmartScore preferences options. Repeat - If the command-line
uninstall.sscore script is to be used, Save configuration within SmartScore before running
the uninstall script – unless these files are not important.
When /export/home starts to reach a capacity of 100%, there will likely be a system
problem. The goal is to keep this partition at some level of capacity that is below 100%.
It is important to understand that other “non-SmartScore” files in this partition can also
lead to over-capacity.
But, for the purposes of this SmartScore Maintenance Procedure, it is recommended that
when the ~sdc/sscore/studies directory reaches 800 files (roughly a file system capacity of
50M) all the files, or a subset of all the files should be removed per the following removal
procedure.
Find the capacity of the ~sdc/sscore/studies directory:
1. Type cd ~sdc/sscore/studies .
2. Type du -k
The size of the directory is displayed. (example = 141)
NOTE: 800 files (50M) is an estimation that should be used in conjunction with the
directory’s normal df –k output characteristics. Remember, this is meant to be a proactive
service procedure – hopefully to avoid SmartScore 3.3 file system issues until replaced by
SmartScore 3.5 – which, of course is the standing recommendation.
Remove save state files from ~sdc/sscore/studies directory
Find out from the customer what SmartScore studies in the studies directory file listing are
now old, and not needed anymore. It is possible that none of them will be needed for
future use. However, this is a site usage specific variable, and should be verified with the
user before it is assumed. A possible usage scenario would be where a follow-up study is
planned on a patient, and therefore the save state information will be needed to compare
to the last study. Theoretically, this should not be needed if a report was generated, but
the customer could conceivably be using it this way.
3. Remove the unwanted files (or in blocks with the appropriate unix wildcard specifier)
Example:
• Type rm ##-##-##-##_####_#(##-##-##-##_####_# (file name)
4. The following text is displayed:
o rm: remove ##-##-##-##_####_# (yes/no)?
o Type y to confirm.
The Solaris and Linux SmartScore 3.5 CDROMs are different and have different part
numbers. The following are examples of what the SmartScore 3.5 revisions are as of the
writing of this document.
• 2228113-14
o 3.5_F_11 – Solaris
• 2355178-5
o 3.5_L_4012 – Linux – (AW4.1 – 4.3 only)
• 2355178-8
o 3.5_L_4015 – Linux
9.3.2 SMARTSCORE 3.5 INSTALLATION
If there is a portable media (floppy) license key - it can be used during the Install Package
/ Easy Install software installation. But, again – not standard:
• Insert the media (floppy) and then launch Install Package / Easy Install.
CDROM Installation
• Click on [INSTALL] from the cdrom [CONTENTS]
o The license key pop-up window will appear with 0 in the license key field.
The license key string will not fill in - click [OK].
• SmartScore will install successfully if the license media (floppy) is valid.
PRELOAD Hard Disk Installation
• Click [INSTALL] after selecting from the hard disk [CONTENTS]
o The license key pop-up window will appear with the SmartScore license key
string filled in – click [OK]
• SmartScore will install successfully if the license media (floppy) is valid.
NOTE: In either of the above scenarios - If a valid license media is not inserted, and [OK ]
is clicked, the application will fail the installation with a security key validation error, and a
pop-up window will appear - Installation failed with an error code – or something to this
effect...
NOTE: If a valid license media is not inserted, and [OK ] is clicked, the application will fail
the installation with a security key validation error, and a pop-up window will appear -
Installation failed with an error code – or something to this effect...
• install.sscore KEY
o KEY = license number to enable software
If no KEY, it will try to access it from the license media.
• If no KEY or media KEY, it will fail as a bad license key.
• uninstall.sscore Un-install & retain installation files for future hard disk install.
ALERT
The uninstall.sscore script LOSES the SmartScore configuration and logo
files. Save them first in SmartScore preferences options. Repeat - If the command-line
uninstall.sscore script is to be used, Save configuration before running the uninstall script
– unless these files are not important.
• install.sscore KEY
o KEY = license number to enable software
If no KEY, it will try to access it from the license media.
• If no KEY or media KEY, it will fail as a bad license key.
• uninstall.sscore Un-install & retain installation files for future hard disk install.
• uninstall.sscore –all
(SmartScore 3.5_L_4015 & 4.0 & forward only)
• Un-install ALL SmartScore “functional” FILES (will need the
application cdrom to re-install).
SmartScore 3.5 and beyond configuration files can be saved the same as SmartScore 3.3.
But, also with the standard AW SERVICES or ADMIN / Save Configuration Utility.
Example SmartScore 3.5 Configuration Service dependencies scenarios:
• Re-load of SmartScore software only:
o Save & Restore files within SmartScore and/or AW Save Configuration
• AW Platform Re-load:
o Save & Restore AW configuration on AW platform.
PROBLEM:
Window Frame
DISCUSSION:
However, if one were to do something to the AW to re-set this .XSdC file by effectively
removing the line "Mwm*AWTapp.clientDecoration: none" (after SmartScore is
installed and working OK), the frame problem will appear. One of the things that could
GE Healthcare CSE IB/NPI SMARTSCORE Installation / Service Manual
SCENARIO 2: Another potential scenario that could see this issue is with SmartScore
3.5_L_4014 or 4015 after a “new” installation of SmartScore (where SmartScore did not
previously exist). The 4014 and 4015 revisions of SmartScore 3.5 do not add this AW
platform environment variable in the ~sdc/.XSdC file - to turn off
"Mwm*AWTapp.clientDecoration: none"
RESOLUTION 1:
If this frame / border issue ever presents itself, you can fix it by simply re-installing
SmartScore 3.5_L_4008 or 4012 either from the easy install hard disk menu, the
cdrom, or the command-line install.sscore script. Logout and log back in. Frame
should be gone when you launch SmartScore again.
RESOLUTION 2:
Check the details of the .XSdC file per the above information, and the “nedit”
illustration of the .XSdC file screen-shot below.
If the Mwm*AWTapp.clientDecoration: none line is missing
• Open a command window and use any text editor – like “nedit”
• If it is not there, position your cursor to be at the last line – new blank line – and
type in this line exactly like you see it here with a space between : & none:
o Mwm*AWTapp.clientDecoration: none
• When you are happy with your creation, click on the File menu, Save your work,
and reboot the workstation.
• When the AW is back up, SmartScore should launch with no frame border…
This is not a “normal” installation or service procedure. IF, and ONLY IF the
customer/radiologist requests - the following is the procedure to configure specialized research
scoring methods. In order to successfully do this, the customer must provide the following
specific variables:
9.5.1 PROCEDURE
1.) Open a unix command window and perform the following commands:
cd sscore ENTER
cd bin ENTER
ls ENTER
config_sscore ENTER
3.) A window with TABS will open towards the top of the screen. The First Tab is “Display”.
Below there will be THREE labeled fields:
- THRESHOLD
- DEFAULT LEVEL
- DEFAULT WINDOW
NOTICE The threshold value listed here must be the lowest value the site intends to
use. Example; If they intend on using the AJ 90 score as one of their available reports then
they must enter 90 in this field, and all subsequent values must be larger.
Example Configuration:
a.) Click on tab “Score 3"
b.) Name - enter in the score name desired on the report - 8 characters MAX.
c.) Filter - this is pixel connectivity. The number given here is the number of additional
pixels to be connected.
* A filter of 1= 2 pixel connectivity.
* A filter of 3=4 pixel connectivity.
* Typical value is 1 for GE scanners & 2 for Imatron.
* The maximum value you can enter in this field is 5.
d.) Score Class - choices are:
* SteppedScorer - all AJ reports fall into this class
* LinearScorer - invokes Linear scoring algorithm
* VolumeScorer - measures volume of the calcium in mm3
* MassScorer - calculates the mass of calcium in mg.
e.) Threshold - User defines - see NOTICE in step 3.
f.) Continue this process for Score 4 - 8, if desired.
3.) In the ALGORITHM WINDOW, you should see all the scoring methods that are currently
configured - including the one(s) that you setup with the config_sscore process.
The scoring methods should have a 'CHECK BOX' that - when checked - designates the
scoring method to appear in the REPORT output.
- Make sure that the scoring method(s) that you configured with the config_sscore
process appear in the ALGORITHM WINDOW.
If it (or they) do not, it could be that perhaps the Browser was not restarted after the
config_sscore activity.
- Presumably, the user would like the newly configured scoring method(s) to appear in the
REPORT output. Make sure that there is a CHECK MARK in the box corresponding to
the new scoring method(s). DO NOT CHANGE THE CHECK BOX STATUS OF ANY OF
THE SCORING METHODS THAT YOU DID NOT CONFIGURE - unless the user
specifically asks you to.
For further verification, a scoring report can be generated to verify that the scoring
method(s) appear in the report output.
10. FRU’S
Because this manual will not be automatically updated for every software cdrom update that
does not change the details of this manual significantly - it is possible that in the future one
might get a newer version part number of the software cdrom when ordering this number,
without the part number in this manual getting updated before or at the exact same time.
All forward revisions of the application cdrom(s) will be setup to replace the old cdrom(s) and
purge them from availability.
