Square Test
Submitted by: Ma. Roche D. Caro
Solve the problem by following the steps sequentially, the steps of hypothesis
testing.
Test the hypothesis if hypertension is related is related to the drinking habits
among 200 males respondents in a certain locality as shown below.
Solution:
1. Ho: There is no significant relationship between Hypertension and drinking
habits among 200 males in the locality.
Ha: There is a significant relationship between hypertension and drinking
habits among 200 males in the locality.
2. a = .05 since the significant level is not specified
3. Chi (X2)-test
4. Find the tabular value
Degree of Freedom = (row classification-1) (column classification-1)
Df= (r-1) (c-1)
r = 2, male classification with hypertension and without hypertension
c = 3, drinking habits classified as Non- drinker, Moderate drinker, Heavy
drinker
df = (2-1) (3-1) = 2
Tabular value = 5.99 with a = .05 ( found in appendix of Chi Square table).
5. Computation
A. Compute for expected frequency (FE)
Formula:
Expected Fe = (row total) (column total)
Grand total
Observed 22 45 42 22 54 15
frequency
Expected 39.53 27.47 37.76 26.24 40.71 28.29
Frequency
Compute X2 value
Formula:
X2 = ∑(Of – E )2/expected frequency
OF 22 45 42 22 54 15
EF 39.53 27.47 37.76 26.24 40.71 28.29
(O-E) -17.53 17.53 4.24 -4.24 13.29 -13.29
(O-E)2 307.30 307.30 17.98 17.98 176.62 176.62
(O-E)2/ef 7.77 11.19 .48 .69 4.32 6.24
X2 = 30.69
Decision:
Since computed value is 30.69 more than the tabular value of 5.99 ( Ho) null
hypothesis is rejected. It means there is a significant relationship between
hypertension and drinking habits among 200 males in the locality.
