TAUSUG ART-

THE TAUSUG ARE THE COASTAL “PEOPLE OF THE CURRENT”, KNOWN FOR
THEIR COLORFULLY-PAINTED VINTA BOATS AND THEIR MASTERY OF CRAFTS. THEY’RE ALSO
KNOWN FOR PANGALAY, A TRADITIONAL FORM THAT PREDATES CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM IN
THE PHILIPPINES SULU ARCHIPELAGO.

UKKIL OR OKIR MEANS the art of sculpting or carving and a particular curvilinear design.

"Ukkil" was a Tausug art form long before the Spaniards introduced Western-style
painting in the Philippines. The "ukkil" is a design form indigenous to the Muslim ethnic
groups in Mindanao, and it can be seen in their wood carvings, brassware, and textiles,
among others.
