CHECKLIST OF PARAMETERS OF A "GOOD"

SPEECH

Know the PURPOSE of your speech.

Know your AUDIENCE.
Establish CREDIBILITY with your
audience.
Your STYLE of delivery matters!
Nerves are NOT your best friends.
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

1
● Know the PURPOSE of your speech.
○ What do you intend to achieve from
the speech? Is it a purely
informational speech? Is it a
persuasive speech? Do you want the
audience to take action, or do you
want to merely entertain them?
○ When you have a clear "purpose
statement", you are well equipped to
decide on the contents of your speech
and draw a clear structure or outline.
○ Also take your speaking situation into
consideration. Are you invited to
introduce the winner of an award? Do
you have to give a eulogy? Or, do you

2
have to present a seminar in your
class?

● Know your AUDIENCE.

○ Analyze your audience. This involves
connecting with your audience and
curating a speech to their interests,
beliefs and wavelength of
understanding.
○ What experiences and values could
you share with your audience?
Building on shared and common
experiences bolsters credibility as well
as unifies an audience towards a
common goal.

3
○ An audience centered approach will
take your speech delivery to greater
heights by clueing you in about the
kind of jokes, words and phrases you
can and cannot include.

● Establish CREDIBILITY with your

audience.
○ If you have expertise, education,
experience or other qualifications that
make you an expert in the area then
find ways to reveal it.
○ Do not come off as a braggart or
someone superior.

4
○ When the audience accepts you as an
expert, you'll have their undivided
attention.
○ To actively build trust with your
audience, let your emotions and
personality come through during your
speech. Doing so will convey your
interest in the audience and their
time.
○ Let your enthusiasm for the topic
show. Fakes will be quickly exposed,
causing general displeasure i.e.
confused expressions, people
checking their wrist watches.

5
● Your STYLE of delivery matters!
○ Listeners don't want to wonder
whether you have a pulse or not.
Don't just recite your script. Move
away from the podium, use hand
movements, move your body, and
vary your voice.
○ Some of our most cherished
childhood memories revolve around
bedtime, when our elders read stories
to us, stimulating our imaginations,
and teleporting us into majestic eras
and scenes.
○ Therefore, as adults we continue to
love "once upon a time", though

6
speakers use a variety of introductory
phrasing.
○ To reinforce your ideas, try to factor in
quotations or scientific research. It
offers a second credible voice that
echoes your claims.
○ Take a minute to jot down the names
of three speakers you rate highly.
Every one of them strikes you as
energetic, vital and sometimes
dramatic. They ignite your interest
because they don't just have a perfect
"written" speech. They also have:

✓ ease of communication

7
✓ usage of language that compels
listeners

✓ dressing sense according to the

occasion

✓ the right voice modulation

✓ the skill to grab the audience's

attention and maintain it

● Nerves are NOT your best friends.

○ Focus on the audience. This way, you
won't be excessively concerned about
yourself―whether you're making a
favorable impression or not.
○ Those self directed thoughts can
become obsessive, distracting you

8
from stellar speech delivery and
audience approval.
○ Never look down consistently during a
speech. Make sure to maintain eye
contact with the members in your
audience.

● PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

○ Developing a speech structure will
NEVER be your last step. "Writing"
your speech on a paper won't cover
even half the milestone.
○ You may be well known in a particular
field/industry. But, if you are not
prepared, not organized, not

9
practiced, or not punctual, you will not
be perceived as competent and your
credibility will suffer.
○ The audience is present to listen to
YOU. Therefore, it is your job to hold
their attention. If your thoughts are
scattered or if you are underprepared,
IT SHOWS.
