What is the Volunteer Centre?
We are part of Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS) and we help people wanting to volunteer
and organisations offering voluntary roles to find one another.
Book a 30-minute appointment with an advisor who can help you find a suitable role and
can answer any questions you might have about volunteering. Our advisors are friendly,
knowledgeable and experienced in helping people to find volunteer opportunities
The Circle has a number of Covid-19 infection control measures in place. We ask that masks
are worn at all times whilst using communal spaces and that social distancing is followed.
Hand sanitizer is available and an enhanced cleaning regime is in place. Appointments at
the Volunteer Centre take place in a socially distanced, well-ventilated area.
Our volunteer advisors can also help by phone or email, identifying roles that might suit you
and answering any questions you have about volunteering. To request phone or email
support, please see the following webpage: www.sheffieldvolunteercentre.org.uk/start-
volunteering
Spotlight on…
Step Out Sheffield
Step Out Sheffield is a volunteer-led organisation, founded in 2016, that
provides short walks at 23 different venues across the city each week.
Our experienced Volunteer Walk Leaders and Walk Assistants have all
been trained, and are insured, by our umbrella organisation, the
Ramblers.
Walks generally last between 40 minutes and an hour and are delivered
at a pace to suit our walkers. To accommodate all levels of fitness our
volunteers offer a choice of walks: a shorter, slower walk and a longer,
brisker one. With one or two exceptions the leaders vary the route from week to week to introduce variety
and to take account of the ground conditions and the weather.
The role of a Step Out Sheffield Walk Assistant is to support the experienced volunteers who lead and back
mark our walks by acting as extra eyes and ears in the middle of the group to help keep the walkers safe and
socialised while they walk. You can choose which of our 23 weekly walks to support and will get more out of
the experience if you volunteer on the same walk on a regular basis. This way you’ll get to know the walkers
as well as your fellow volunteers and hopefully make new friends whilst enjoying some gentle exercise in the
fresh air. You don’t need any qualifications for this role – you don’t even need to be especially fit. It helps if
you remember to look out for the walkers behind you as well as those in front and having a good sense of
humour is an asset.
Step Out Sheffield’s short led weekly walks can help establish a regular exercise habit and improve
socialisation and wellbeing. Walks are free – all that’s needed is a comfortable pair of supportive and ideally
waterproof shoes. What are you waiting for? If you can’t commit on a regular basis as a volunteer – just join
us for a walk!
