INTRODUCTION bbdd

"The Gift of the Magi" is a short story by O. Henry that takes place at Christmastime. In
this story, the modern Magi are a young married couple named Jim and Della who are both
innocent. The Magi were wise men who came and, out of devotion to Jesus as the
prophesied Messiah, presented gifts to the infant child. The message of this short story is
that love is the most important gift that two people can ever give to one another. It is
about a young husband and wife who wish to give valuable Christmas gifts to each other.
The couple's limited money force them to give up something they value in order to
purchase a gift for the other.

SUMMARY
The plot revolves around James and Della Dillingham, despite their poverty they decided to
give each other a beautiful Christmas gift on Christmas Eve. Della sells her lovely long hair
to purchase a silver chain for Jim's most valued possession, his pocket watch. On the other
hand, Jim has sold his pocket watch to pay for fancy hair combs for Della's stunning hair.
The concept of The Gift of the Magi is love and sacrifice. It serves as a bittersweet reminder
that people and the things we love and care about are more important than anything else.

ANALYSIS
The story shows an important lesson about loving and caring for others. In the story, Jim
and Della both traded their most prized items to buy something wonderful for each other.
The narrative is an excellent approach to encourage children to show affection and be kind
to their family. The story also shows that gifts or materialistic presents are not the only
things that can bring happiness; true happiness comes from sharing and love to one
another. It has traditional narrative plot structure and it uses Third Person Point Of View.
Three of the most important literary devices used in "The Gift of the Magi" are dramatic
irony, symbolism, and allusion. Dramatic irony occurs when characters are unaware of the
scenario involving their gifts but the audience is aware of it."The Gift of the Magi" has a
rueful and affectionate tone. The author gives a good portrayal of Della and Jim, praising
her lovely hair and her love for Jim. But it is ironic that each person's sacrifice has made the
sacrifice of the other person meaningless. The story's central message is that
unconditional love is the greatest gift of all. Della and Jim demonstrate that love is more
important than materialistic things by making sacrifices for one another. "Among all who
give and receive presents, such as them are the wisest," the narrator says. In "The Gift of
the Magi," the concepts of simplicity and wisdom are important. It was shown in the story
that because they gave their gifts out of love, they shown true wisdom. The narrator
explains that Jim and Della have respected one another, just like the magi who brought
presents to the baby Jesus in the Bible to honor him. Their willingness to go to great
lengths for one another serves as a sign of their love.
To summarize the story, The lesson to be learned is that genuine love, rather than any
present we could give another person, best represents the spirit of Christmas. In other
words, love is a greater gift than any material item could ever be.
