What is Romantic
Period?

composers started to
incorporate their cultures in
their musical composition.

It is a period that described as
a cultural movement that
stressed emotion, imagination,
individualism, and freedom of
expression.
Romantic Period
Nationalism is commonly observed
among the composition of this Era.
“Polonaise” was one of the
examples composed that shows
nationalism.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

• The Romantic period started around 1830 and ended around 1900, as
compositions became increasingly expressive and inventive. Expansive
symphonies, virtuosic piano music, dramatic operas, and passionate songs
took inspiration from art and literature. Nationalism is one of the main
features of this era. This is evidently shown in some compositions made
by Romantic composers. One of which is the Polonaise of Frederic
Chopin, a dance composition for piano which is famous in Poland until
today. In addition, the composers’ focuses mainly on individuality of style
and expressive aims and subjects.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

• The romantic period is a term applied to the


literature of approximately the first third of the
nineteenth century. Romantic is a derivative of roman,
which was borrowed from the French roman in the
sixteenth century. At first it meant only "like the old
romances" but gradually it began to carry a certain
taint.

• Romantic era produced great composers who


innovates variety of sounds in piano music, orchestral
music and vocal music as well. FREDRIC CHOPIN,
FRANZ LISZT, CAMILLE SAINT-SAENS, PETER
ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY and HECTOR BERLIOZ are
among the composers who contribute to the history
of music.
THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF
ROMANTIC MUSIC:

• Freedom of form and design.


• Song-like melodies (lyrical) as well as many chromatic
harmonies and discords.
• Dramatic contrasts of dynamics and pitch.
• Big orchestras, due mainly to brass and the invention of
the valve.

Niccolo Paganini
He was born on October 27, 1782 in
Genoa, Italy in a family of six
children.
His musical skills started with
playing mandolin at the age of five.
Paganini became the most famous
violin virtuoso in the world .

Frederic Chopin
He was known as the poet of the
piano.
He was born March 1, 1810 in
Zelowa, Poland.
He studied piano at Warsaw
Conservatory under Wilhelm Wurfel
and most of his music was
• Ballade – a verse form or narrative that is set to music
• Etude – a piece composed for the development of a
specific technique
• Mazurka – a Polish dance in triple time signature
• Nocturne – an instrumental composition of a pensive,
dreamy mood, for the piano
• Polonaise – a slow Polish dance in triple time that
consists of a march or procession

CHOPIN IS • Prelude – a short piece of music that can be used as a


preface, and introduction to another work or may stand

Franz Liszt
He was known as the virtuoso
pianist, a composer and the busiest
musician during the Romantic Era.
He played and studied in Vienna and
Paris while performing in concerts in
the rest of Europe.

Robert Schumann
He was a composer and music
critic.
He was born in 1810 in Zwickau.
His father wanted him to study
law so in 1821, Schumann went
to Leipzig to study law.

Hector Berlioz
 French romantic composer born
on December 11, 1803.
At his young age , he learned to
play guitar and flute but never
became skilled in a specific
musical instrument.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky
He was born on May 7,1840 in
Votkinsk, Russia.
He was known for his ballet
music.
He first studied law and became a
law clerk in St. Petersburg in his
twenties.

Camille Saint- Saens
He was known as a talented musician
from an early age.
He was born in Paris on October 9,
1835 and started music through the
help of his aunt by teaching him piano
lessons when he was only two years old
and afterward, he began composing
piano pieces at age three.
