Introduction:
Connotation and Denotation are two principal methods of describing the meanings of words.
Connotation refers to the wide array of positive and negative associations that most words
naturally carry with them, whereas denotation is the precise, literal definition of a word that
might be found in a dictionary.The terms connotation and denotation are essential in
semiotics. Marxism, Cultural Studies, structuralism, and every branch of literature and cultural
theory. Both denotation and connotation, though they each describe a distinct meaning,
describe the connection between a signifier (a sign's form) and what is signified (what a sign
represents).
Denotation:
 A pizza box, one slice of pizza.
 The catchphrase "Fight for the Last Slice,"
 I see a vegetable, such as cauliflower or broccoli, on top of the slice, together with
cheese.
Connotation:
 Everyone is squabbling over the pizza because it is so amazing. The slices have already
been consumed because of this. It was made plain by the slogan.
 Anyone would want to eat the slice since it appears to be so delicious. It has such a
beautiful appearance. It appears natural and fresh as well.

Denotation:
 In this picture we can see that from a salt jar salt is pouring over some food.
 The background is a picture of a home.
 There is a logo “SOL SAL MARINE” that says it’s marine it’s natural.
 In the salt jar, we can see a deep-sea environment.

Connotation:
 From the picture, we can understand it is an advertisement of a salt brand.
 Which claims to be natural salt.
 It seems they some how produced the salt from deep sea natural water or something.
 Denotation:
 In this picture, we can see the background is totally white.
 On a sheet hanger, one pair of shoe is hanging
 We can see there is a logo of Nike Air Max
 And there is a text they keep you alive
Connotation:
 The hanging shoes on steel represent the shape of lungs.
 This is a poster advertisement of Nike Air Max.
 The concept was to show the shape of a pair of lungs to symbolize the breathing of
oxygen.
 The end line, They Keep You Alive, plays on the notion that the shoes are as vital to
you, as air is to your lungs, therefore keeping you alive in all senses of the word.
 The color white often evokes ideas of purity, simplicity, and cleanliness
 Denotation:
 We can a deep yellow background in this picture.
 White smoke coming out from a brown coffee cup.
 There is a logo or a writing McCafe.
 A cock shape on the left of the picture and maybe a man shape on the right side.

Connotation:
 The yellow background represents heat, joy, happiness, hope, optimism, contentment,
and uplift.
 A man is awakened by a cock on the left side. And the man is feeling revitalized and
eager to begin his day.
 And than by taking a coffee you will feel refreshing.
 Denotation:
 The picture seems like a vintage movie poster.
 The background is deep sea blue.
 In the middle of the poster, there are three people who seem like a family of three
mother father, and son. And there are some paintings of fish and sun.
 The name of the movie is “Pother Pachali”
 There is some text in bellow about the writer and the producer

Connotation:
 The poster seems like it is a family movie.
 In the middle, it seems like the boy is sad and the parents are trying to make the kid
happy.
 Maybe the poster portrayed the hassle of daily life by the name “Pother Pachali” and
at the end the photo of the family portrayed who is important to you in your life or for
whom we live.
 Denotation:
 In this picture, we can see a lion cub.
 The background is a dark cave.
 A big paw prints.
 There is a big text “The Lion King.”

Connotation:
 The picture shows the lion cub is getting out of the cave.
 There is a big paw print but there is no big lion in this picture. That kind of thing
portrays that either his mother or father who was protecting the cub is not coming
back that’s why the cub is out of the cave.
 The expression of the lion cub face is really confusing.
 The text “The Lion King” portrays the whole picture like by following the big paw print
the lion cub will be the next king.
 Denotation:
 In the picture, we can see a gentleman who seems rich.
 The background is black and there is a window from there light is coming.
 There is text “The Godfather”.
 There is a cross in someone’s hand and maybe it is bleeding.

Connotation:
 The black background color meaning is symbolic of mystery, power, elegance, and
sophistication.
 The crossbar in hand that is bleeding somehow portrays power and killing.
 According to the text “The Godfather” and the background it seems like the poster
tried to portray someone powerful.
 Denotation:
 The picture got a dark deep sea blue background.
 A person is looking at someone or something with a very intense angry look.
 There is an ambulance and some buildings in the background.
 There is a text Taqdeer a hoichoi original series.

Connotation
 The text “Taqdeer” means fate destine. From the text and the background ambulance
we can assume that they have tried to portray something about life and death or
some thing uncertain happened with the person in the poster.
Conclusion:
Through denotation and connotation, I learned how to find out the inner meaning of the
picture. As a marketing student, I find it very useful. I understood how to connect with their
consumer or a group of people though a picture. I learned a picture can also tell a story.
