Labsheet Compression Ratio
Labsheet Compression Ratio
2.0 OBJECTIVES:
3.1 Perform the experiments correctly according to the lab sheet and recognize the methods
used in the experiments
3.2 Prepare a proper technical report based on data from experiments
3.3 Demonstrate ability to lead a team to complete the assigned tasks or assigned project
during practical work sessions.
4.0 INTRODUCTION:
In a combustion engine, the static compression ratio is calculated based on the relative
volumes of the combustion chamber and the cylinder. It is a fundamental specification for
combustion engines. The dynamic compression ratio is a more advanced calculation which
also takes into account gasses entering and exiting the cylinder during the compression
phase.
Most engines used a fixed compression ratio, however a variable compression ratio engine is
able to adjust the compression ratio while the engine is in operation.
5.0 APPARATUS :
1
c. Dial gauge indicator holder
d. Vernier caliper
e. Internal micrometer
f. Measuring cylinder 1000 ml
6.1 Make sure that all machines have affective and properly working guards that are always in
placed where machines are operating.
6.2 Keep the floor clean of metal chips and curls, put them in container provided for such
things.
6.3 Don’t lean against the machines.
6.4 Get first aid immediately for any injury.
7.0 PROCEDURES:
a) Preparation
i. Remove cylinder’s head.
ii. Clean the cylinder block and combustion cavity.

c) Swept Volume (Vs)
1.Length of stroke ( L )
i. Mount the dial gauge on cylinder.
ii. Rotate the crankshaft and make sure the piston at Bottom Dead Center (BDC) position,
iii. Set the dial gauge at 0 when the piston on BDC.
iv. Use the Vernier caliper to take the measuring.
v. Record the data in table below.
vi. Repeat step (iv).
vii. Make sure repeat at difference area to take measuring.
viii. Calculate the average length of stroke ( L )

2. Diameter of bore ( B )
i. Before using the internal micrometer, make calibration first.
ii. Using the internal micrometer, place the internal micrometer on top the piston.
iii. Take the data recorded to the table.
iv. Repeat step ( ii and iii ) and repeat twice.
