VIALS USE IN PHLEBOTOMY


(use of differently colored vials in phlebotomy)

These were evolved with the aid of Joseph Kleiner in 1947 and are currently being produced
with the aid of Becton, Dickinson and organization, a global issuer of clinical substances to the
healthcare and pharmaceutical enterprise .Extraordinary phlebotomy tubes are identified with
the aid of the color of the stopper. Each color is specified for different tests.

Dark Green colored vial :

Additive : sodium heparin

Phlebotomy vials with green top contain sodium herapin, lithium herapin and

Purple colored vial :

Additive: EDTA

Vials with purple colored lid contain EDTA additive that binds with calcium ions,
effectively inhibiting coagulated Full blood count.
 Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
 Blood film for abnormal cells
 Reticulocytes
 HbA1C for diabetic control
 Parathyroid hormone.

Yellow colored vial :

Additive : sodium polyanethol sulfonate

These vials are used for a huge variety of

Grey bottle vial :


Additive : Sodium Floride And Potassium Oxalate

As compared t the yellow one this vial is used cony for two purposes. It
basically used for biochemistry in which whole blood is required for analysis.
