Title of Standard Operating Procedure:

Fire Response Plan
Purpose:
This will be the training protocol and guidelines for use of the live flame effect (torch) for Jane Eyre.

1) In the event of a fire, the backstage crew/fire walk should immediately let the Stage Manager know of the
situation.
2) If there are 2 people present (i.e., Fire Watch and an ASM) then the person on comm with the Stage
Manager should relay the information of the situation while the other acts upon it.
3) If crew member is comfortable fighting the fire, then they should approach with a fire extinguisher or fire
blanket and follow the outlined procedure below.
4) If the fire is too dangerous to contain or cannot be extinguished with one fire extinguisher, then do NOT
attempt to control the fire. Go directly to the evacuation procedures outlined in the Crowd Management
SOP and the show specific fire plan.
a. Fires that are waist high or below can usually be extinguished or contained. If it is spreading to a
large area, evacuate immediately!!
5) In the event of any unplanned fire, even if it can be controlled by crew, you must notify campus police. DO
NOT CALL 911. Call 816-235-1515. Campus police will determine what actions must be taken.

Fire Extinguisher Use:

1) Make sure you have an unobstructed path behind you in case the fire cannot be controlled
2) For a fire blanket, throw the blanket over the small fire and wait for it to be smothered.
3) To remember the proper use of a fire extinguisher, remember the PASS – word
a. Pull the pin. Pull the locking mechanism on the handle.
b. Aim the nozzle. Remember you aren’t fighting the flames; you are fighting the source. Aim the hose
at the BASE of the fire.
c. Squeeze the lever above the handle. This will release the extinguishing agent. The agent will
dispense immediately when lever is squeezed and stop immediately when released.
d. Sweep the extinguisher from side to side. Move toward the fire and keep nozzle aimed at the base of
the fire. Repeat the sweeping motion until the fire appears to be out. If it re-ignites, repeat the
procedures
4) Again, if at any moment you realize that the fire CANNOT be contained or you feel uncomfortable fighting
the fire or it appears you may lose your clear exit, evacuate without hesitation.
