Capturing an effervescent mixture of the mid-90s, it's a
striking, authentic observation of two people experiencing
a romantically charged connection which would come to
erode and inform the shape of their future.
There is a part in the movie wherein Jesse and
Celine are talking about their past lives, how they
broke-up with their ex-boyfriend and ex-girlfriend,
and how they recuperated from their own
traumatizing story. I realized that some people are
going to leave, but that’s not the end of the story.
That’s the end of their part in your story. The
before Sunrise movie made me understand and
appreciate that sometimes God removes someone
from our life to bring the right one.
This is the part 1:14:00 wherein Jesse
and Celine headed their way towards one
of the stairways in Vienna – talking about
how grateful they are as they meet and
link-up each other. You can see and feel to
the bones the amorous and romantic
exchanging dialogues of Jesse and Celine
and one of the highlight scenes from the
movie. Which gives me an introspection
about what would the world be like if
everyone is in love? Will still be the
existence of violent extremism? How about
terrorism? Prejudice? Discrimination? I
guess not.
For me, it is the cheesiest part of the
movie – telephone scene. 1:04:50, I
like the way how they express their
inner thoughts towards each other.
When Celine is describing Jesse with a
greasy hair, big blue eyes, and being
clumsy. I tittered a lot when it’s Jesse’s
turn and talk about how he met Celine
and talk about the kiss, etc.
In somewhat, I envisage The Canterbury Tales written
by Geoffrey Chaucer to the movie because of the same
“road trip story style” or also known as pilgrimage. The
Before Sunrise movie was also a good depiction of
reality, succeeding on the narration of a wide spectrum
of society such as love, death, principles, gender
stereotypes, etc., same as The Canterbury Tales.
There is a part in the movie wherein Jesse told a story
about how he saw his aunt after her death which
reminds me of one the studies of Sigmund Freud about
dreaming and seeing of a dead family member, there is
also a psychological explanation behind seeing them.
Psychological reasons can include a feeling of guilt or
regret for not having spent time with a loved one before
he/she died or some anxiety about that departed family
member. Which you can extrapolate that Jesse don’t
much have spent his time together with his aunt.

wherein Jesse and
Celine walking at the
alley and discussing
about gender
stereotypes and social
norms. And it gives me
another introspection
about patriarchy or male
dominance and
matriarchy as a parallel
ideology.
A question driven me after that scene, do you think the
idea of matriarchal would replace the patriarchal
system someday? Based on my speculation, it’s a big
YES. And if we will put it in the context of LEADERSHIP,
women will definitely dominate the spot. People
believe women have the right to be political leaders.
When it comes to honesty, intelligence and a handful
of other character traits they value highly in leaders,
the public rates women superior to men, according to
demographics and surveys.
I like the part whereas dialogues are not
just simply to entertain but to inform as
well. A very informative scene 1:03:50
wherein Celine is explaining birth dance to
Jesse and why and how female spiders kill
male spiders after mating.
