Revisiting the Purpose of the Teaching Profession

Teaching is a fulfilling and rewarding profession. Although, some people would say
you’ll never get rich when you enter this field because all you can get are heavy loads of
stress and paper works. Now that I am a teacher myself I can really say that these people are
partly correct. However, I did not become a teacher to get rich; I become a teacher because
it is my calling and passion. During college days, I was inspired by one of my teachers and I
said to myself that I’d like to follow her footsteps in the future. She is a great teacher. She
teaches her students effectively and efficiently. Hearing all her stories and achievements as a
teacher was totally inspiring. I wanted to become like her who motivates, molds and inspire
students to succeed in life. Financially,I won’t get rich in this profession but nevertheless I’m
confident that I will be wealthy in terms of knowledge and fulfillment.

John Cotton Dana said who dares to teach must never cease to learn. Educators will
always be a student. We, teachers, continue widening our academic endeavors and strive
hard to seek new learning to grow professionally. Students mainly depends on teachers
when it comes to clarification of ideas thus we must be fully equipped with knowledge
especially in our area of specialization. Not all people are called in this profession, teachers
play several roles at school such as facilitator, mentor, speaker, event organizer, counselor,
etc. and only chosen people can do these roles simultaneously. When you start teaching,
you must be comfortable of being uncomfortable because most of the times you will be
given task that is way beyond your expertise. Teaching as a profession is daunting and nerve
wracking however once you appreciate it’s beauty, you’ll never see it the way you see it
before.
