Dear Dr. Payne,

The Peach High School Orchestra is happy to present you with our budget proposal. Over
the next five years, our goal is to expand the orchestra program and subsequent music
department. The budget will allow for this growth through buying new instruments, new music,
and traveling to worthwhile musical experiences.
In this document, you will find the five year budget overview followed by an itemized list
of equipment and other expenses that we will need. In the next section you will find a rationale
for the items on the budget and why they are necessary for the program.
With this budget, we will be able to grow our program, better our community, and
provide necessary learning materials to our students. Should you have any questions, comments,
or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
Sincerely,

Jenna Dominguez
Director of Orchestras

Support Information

Year One

Instruments
Viola Eastmann VA100- There is a need for a half size viola in this program because there is a
student that needs this size. It will be purchased through the capital outlay fund. A case and
shoulder rest is included in the purchase of this viola. There may be more students with this need
of size, therefore the program needs to be in possession of a half size viola.

Other Equipment
Violin/ Viola/ Cello/ Bass Prelude Strings- Strings break often in a string class, therefore in
anticipation of a string breaking, I am purchasing a set of strings for each instrument. If a student
does not have one of their four strings, they are not able to participate in class and learn.

Bass Bag/ Case- It is important to protect instruments so that they stay in tact for a longer period
of time. There is one bass that is missing a case. A fabric case is cost effective and more
reasonable than a case of a different material for a double bass that is very large in size. Having a
case is essential especially in transit to contest.

Light and Dark Rosin- Rosin is an essential part of playing a string instrument. It goes on the
strings to make it catch on the strings and make a sound. Without rosin, the sound of the
ensemble would suffer immensely. Rosin is essential to playing string instruments.

Music Library
All music purchased this year is essential to the learning environment as well as the large group
contest. There are many pieces in the current library that are missing the score, therefore I will
focus on purchasing the scores of the pieces we have in our library, and playing said pieces with
the ensemble.

Travel
Traveling to competitions gives students unique opportunities to learn and experience a new
playing environment. These festivals are attended by many schools in the state which means my
students will be able to meet and learn from like minded individuals. Traveling to competition is
essential to student learning.

Awards
Senior Plaques- Receiving a plaque as a senior will commemorate their time and effort spent in
the orchestras. It is important that students are celebrated for all their efforts as they graduate
from the program.

Phyllis Young Award Plaque and Pin- This award is a distinguished honor given to a student that
exemplifies what it means to be an orchestral musician as well as a hardworking member of the
ensemble.

Lettering Certificate Paper/ Plastic Covers/ Pins- Lettering in orchestra is a motivating aspect to
be involved in community music and further develop their involvement in many different things
that the school and the state offers. Upon earning a “letter”, students will receive a certificate in a
plastic cover and a pin to put on their letter given to them by the school. Students can continue
earning points over the years, in which they will then receive a “bar” that will be purchased in
year 2. Pins and bars are purchased in bulk for a discounted price and for convenience of not
having to buy them every year.

Printing/ Publicity/ Advocacy-

Programs- Programs at concerts are essential for audience engagement. They tell the audience
about the piece being played and about the composer that wrote the piece. Programs also have a
personnel list of all the students performing that night.

Posters- Posters are essential for advertising for our concerts. Students work very hard towards
their concert and deserve a large crowd to play for. With concert posters around town and school,
we can expect a decent turnout.

Brochures- There are two types of brochures: one for young students getting started on a string
instrument, and one for high school students that are interested in joining an orchestra. Either
way, brochures are essential for recruitment to the orchestra program.
Repair and Maintenance
All repairs are necessary to student learning because without working equipment, there is limited
learning. This first year, there will be one major repair for each instrument: violin, viola, cello,
double bass. This is so that there is one more working instrument for each section.

Contest/ Festival Fees

Student participation in contests and festivals is voluntary and often participated in by the top
performing students in the program. To alleviate the monetary burden on the students, the
orchestra program will pay for their entry fees.

Contractual Services
Hiring a double bass specialist for a few days out of the year will improve the quality of the bass
section. This section has more individualized needs than the rest of the group. With a specialist,
they can be given more detailed and challenging instructions to further their playing ability.

Year Two

Instruments
Double Bass- Knilling 1202 Sebastian Model ¾ size is a standard student model bass. The other
¾ size basses that we have are damaged and need more extensive repairs, and beyond that there
are mostly full sized basses or quarter sized basses. With a brand new three quarter sized bass,
students will have the opportunity to play on a high quality bass that fits their body.

Cello Bow- Georg Werner Brazilwood Round cello bow is a quality German bow that is made
for more advanced players. I am purchasing these bows for use in my top orchestra.

Other Equipment
Viola and Bass Strings- Planning for more strings to break, I will purchase more viola and bass
strings first.

Cello Hard Plastic Case- In order for instruments to stay in a quality condition, they must be
protected during travel. This cello case will be used for our highest quality cello we have to be
used at contests and festivals.
Bass Rosin- is different than the rosin used for the other instruments. This rosin is more
expensive than other types because it is made specially for the double bass.

Concert Folders- The current concert folders are falling apart. Therefore, this is the first round of
new concert folders in an attempt to replace all the old folders by year five.

Music Library
All music purchased this year is essential to the learning environment as well as the large group
contest. There are many pieces in the current library that are missing the score, therefore I will
focus on purchasing the scores of the pieces we have in our library, and playing said pieces with
the ensemble.

Travel

Senior Plaques- Receiving a plaque as a senior will commemorate their time and effort spent in
the orchestras. It is important that students are celebrated for all their efforts as they graduate
from the program.

Phyllis Young Award Plaque and Pin- This award is a distinguished honor given to a student that
exemplifies what it means to be an orchestral musician as well as a hardworking member of the
ensemble.

Lettering Certificate Plastic Covers/ Lettering Bars- Lettering in orchestra is a motivating aspect
to be involved in community music and further develop their involvement in many different
things that the school and the state offers. Upon earning a “letter”, students will receive a
certificate in a plastic cover and a pin to put on their letter given to them by the school. Students
can continue earning points over the years, in which they will then receive a “bar” that will be
purchased (in bulk) in this second year.

Year Three

Instruments
Violin, Viola, and Bass bows- The bow is a necessary part of playing a string instrument.
Without a good quality bow, the sound of the music suffers. These bows will belong to the
program and can be used by students upon request.

Other Equipment
Stands and Stand Racks- many of the stands are broken and beyond repair. Over the next several
years I have planned to purchase new stands to replace the old ones.

Travel
Traveling to competitions gives students unique opportunities to learn and experience a new
playing environment. These festivals are attended by many schools in the state which means my
students will be able to meet and learn from like minded individuals. Traveling to competition is
essential to student learning.

Year Four

Instruments
Violin- Strentor Conservatoire II Series is a step up from the student model and is a full size for
our older players. It will be purchased through the capital outlay fund. A case and shoulder rest is
included in the purchase of this violin. There may be more students with this need of size,
therefore the program needs to be in possession of a full size violin.

Cello- Bellafina Prodigy Series will be purchased through the capital outlay fund. This cello
comes with a custom bag case, a brazilwood bow, and prelude strings. There may be more
students with this need of size, therefore the program needs to be in possession of a three quarter
size cello.

Year Five

Instruments
Violin - Strentor Conservatoire II Series is a step up from the student model and also come in a
three quarter size for our younger advanced students. It will be purchased through the capital
outlay fund. A case and shoulder rest is included in the purchase of this violin. There may be
more students with this need of size, therefore the program needs to be in possession of a three
quarter size violin.

Shoulder Rests- are essential in the playing of violin and viola. Every student has different
physical needs, and these shoulder rests have the capability to extend to different lengths to
accommodate different students.

Rock Stops- are essential in the playing of cello and bass so that the instruments do not slide
around on the ground while they are playing. These handy pieces of equipment have a rubber
bottom which keep the endpin in place while the students play.

Concert Folders- The current concert folders are falling apart. Therefore, this is the first round of
new concert folders in an attempt to replace all the old folders by year five.
