For each question (1-10), choose the correct answer (A, B or C). There is an example at the

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Can you remember what you have eaten and drunk and in what amounts in the past five days?
Do you regularly make menus for that day or for the next week? Even if you do not care about
your nutrition, it does not mean that it is not important for your growth. If we believe that "you
are what you eat," we must be careful about what we put into our bodies. This is especially
important during our adolescent years. This involves being well-informed about all of the
ingredients in one's food, as well as planning and balancing one's diet.
A teenager's body is still developing, and it requires a lot of healthy nutrients to grow. Many
teenagers exercise regularly in gyms or more actively in their sports clubs, making a healthy
diet even more important. Because of the increased level of hormonal activity, there is a
greater need for calorie intake, but you must also be cautious about the amount. Your health
also contributes to your overall feeling of happiness.
If you are fit and full of energy, you can take part in the activities that make the social life of a
teenager richer. You can participate in games and sporting activities, make new friends, and
strengthen old ones. It is also important for your self-esteem to be recognized by your peers as
successful. It does not hurt to be recognized as such by other important and influential people
in your life, such as your teachers, parents, relatives, and friends’ parents. After all, we all live
together and depend on each other. Fast food is often available. It is not unusual for people to
choose sandwiches, hamburgers, French fries, hot dogs, and pizza cuts alongside fatty and
low-quality mayo and highly processed ketchup. But they are also the worst choice.
A healthy diet is very important for everyone, especially teenagers. These days, teenagers are
very independent in their decisions, including their choice of food. They also take the advice of
parents and teachers, the authorities who should influence their lives the most, with a grain of
salt. Advertisements and influencers play a significant role. So, the influencers and the
advertisers also have a huge responsibility to be the role models that today’s teenagers
deserve. They should not only think about profit but also about raising awareness about the
importance of healthy eating.

TAEKWONDO LADIES

When Martha was six, a taekwondo club opened its doors in her neighbourhood. As she
became interested in martial arts, she started going to classes twice a week. Soon, she
enjoyed the training so much that she talked about it all the time.
She learned that taekwondo is the art of self-defence that comes from Korea. It is one of the
oldest forms of martial arts in the world, more than two thousand years old. The modern form
of taekwondo was formed in Korea after the Second World War. The participants in
competitions wear a kimono and protective equipment. Punches and kicks are both allowed.
Many of her friends, most of them girls, joined the club soon after Martha, including her
cousin Laura. Despite the difficulties, some of them were able to remain in training.
Sometimes the difficulties included a loss of interest or energy, but the greatest obstacle
was, of course, the period of the lockdown. Fortunately, the coaches organized Zoom classes,
and she continued with the practice at home. It was not a perfect solution, but it was better
than having a large break. The Corona period came to an end, and they returned to live
training.
Over the years, the club's activities have expanded beyond regular training. In the last five
years, she has also participated in a winter camp. She spent three days of intensive training in
spa facilities in Donja Stubica, which is near her hometown of Zagreb. Swimming inside in hot
pools surrounded by frozen countryside was also part of the activities because it was -20
degrees outside at the time. This is one of her favourite memories. Not less interesting was
the sprig survival school organized by the club coaches and held on the slopes of Mount
Medvednica. They learned how to get oriented in nature, how to search for food and water,
how to cook their own meals, how to tie ropes in various knots, and how to start a fire in many
different ways. They also learned how to help themselves and others if they get injured. She
has also taken part in different other organized events and competitions. Being able to
defend herself has contributed a lot to her self-esteem as well.
Her role models are female Croatian competitors. One of them is Lana Banely who won silver
medals in the European championships in 2002 and 2004. The others are Ana and her sister
Lucija Zaninović. Ana was the world champion in 2011 and the European champion in 2014,
and Lucija was the European champion in 2010, 2012, and 2014. There is also Iva Radoš who
won the gold medal in the European Championship in 2014.
She has been growing up alongside her coaches and friends, and now she is in the process
of intensive training for the black belt. She is looking forward to the moment when she will be
able to wear it with pride.

DAILY ROUTINE

I'm not sure about you, but the last few days have been completely exhausting for me. I've
had a lot to do for school and after-school activities since the second term began.
I have the impression that I have been working nonstop for months. What is it that I usually do?
Every morning at 6.15 a.m. I get out of bed. That is, if I don't have to walk the dog. If that's the
case, I'll have to get up even earlier, at 5.45 a.m. There is no daylight at that time, and it is also
very cold since it is winter. So, I put my dog's collar on, grab some treats for him, bundle up, and
go outside. I must spend at least twenty minutes outside with him. Then I go home, have
breakfast with my family, pack my schoolbag, and leave for school at 7.15 a.m. I pick up my
friend Bruno at his home at 7.25 and we walk together to school. There is a large street that we
have to cross on our way, and we have to be very cautious of the traffic. There are many
directions for cars, pedestrian crossings, and trams involved.
The school starts at 8 o’clock but we must arrive fifteen minutes earlier to take off our
jackets and change our shoes, and to prepare ourselves for the first period. On some days we
have extra classes before the first or after the last period. I usually attend extra math classes.
In January I took extra classes in Geography because my teacher had registered me for a
competition. This took a lot of my free time as well. After the second period, we have breakfast,
and lunch is at one o’clock. My school offers a lot of extracurricular activities and I chose to
volunteer and sing in the school choir. That meant additional time twice a week as well. But it
makes me very happy and I wouldn’t give it up...
When I come home, I usually have a snack, rest a bit and then do my homework or study.
Since I also have a hamster, sometimes it’s my job to clean his cage. But I enjoy playing with
animals. I have my football practice three times a week and in the last two months, we also
prepared for different games we had arranged with other football clubs in our town. My
grandma also moved to a retirement home recently, and every time Mum visits her, she says:
‘Tell John to come and visit me!”.
I usually go to bed by ten because I have to get up early the next day. That is if I manage to
finish my homework and have dinner by that time.
And the weekend has been full of additional activities. Football games are always arranged on
Sundays and we spent two Saturdays with our volunteering group helping at an animal shelter.
It was a great experience, but also exhausting.
Now I am in a quieter period of the year and I hope I’ll get some rest in the next few weeks.

Hi Jane,

I'm so excited to go to summer camp! I've never been to a camp before.

I'm glad we'll be sleeping in bungalows because I'm afraid of spiders.
Would you rather sleep in a tent?
I'm making a list of what I should bring with me. I'm not sure what I'm
going to wear. What exactly are you bringing?
My mum says I should not bring my tablet, only my smartphone. How
about you? Are you taking any gadgets?
I'm excited but also nervous about the food and meeting new people. Are
you looking forward to the trip?

Write soon,

Laura

How are you doing?

Thanks for sending me a photo from your holiday. It looks like you had a great

Was it a long journey? Can you tell me more about what you've seen? How did
the weather turn out? What about the food?
Please send some more photos if possible.
I'd love to visit there one day!

Dear Sam,

I can't wait for you to come to Šibenik this summer. Do you know how long you'll be

here so I can make plans?

I'll try to come up with some fun activities. The beaches are great! What do you want to

do? Do you prefer sports? What about going fishing? Or do you want me to look up

some workshops, shows, or concerts?

We can also stay with my parents in the house or in a small bungalow in the backyard.

Which option do you prefer?

Best wishes,

Marc
