Homologous Structures

qHomologous features are physical features due to

evolutionary history.
qThese are structures shared by related organisms
that were inherited by a common ancestor.
qSome examples are an arm of a human, a wing of
a bat, the leg of a cat, and the flipper of a whale.
They are similar and share common traits and
have similar underlying anatomy.
Behavioral Traits

Ancient Organism Remains
q Scientists today have discovered that the ancient organisms remains look like
organisms alive today because they are the living organisms’ ancestors or created
from a common ancestor.
q
q For example megatherium was an ancient ancestor for tree sloths.
q
q Fossils document that the existence of now extinct past species are related to
present day species.
q
q Fossil evidence provides a record of how creatures evolved and how this process can
be represented by a 'tree of life', showing that all species are related to each other.
Embryology

qEmbryos of many different kinds of animals look really similar.

For example, mammals and fish.
q
qFish and human embryos both have gill slits but humans’
disappear before they are born.
Molecular Similarities
• All living organisms share the same genetic material, similar genetic
codes, the same process of genetic expression

Natural Selection
• The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog
Geographical Distribution of Related Species
• Distribution of organisms across
Vestigial Structures
• Vestigial structures show how species evolve and lose structures they
no longer need but they were once useful for their ancestors.
