KIEV
Golden domes and shimmering spires peek out from the
wooded hills rising above the wide Dnipro River. Leafy-green
Kiev, with its traffic-packed boulevards, shopping malls,
countless churches, brilliant music and lively nightlife, has
embraced capitalism, yet held firmly to its heritage. The
Caves Monastery is the spiritual heart of Ukraine. Nearby, a
gigantic Brezhnev-era Motherland statue bearing sword and
shield casts her all-encompassing eye over the city, the
river, and its island beaches.

THE CITY#THECITY#
Kievs 1500-year-old mix of fortunes rings
out loudly - from caves left by scholarly
monks and dazzling blue St Michaels,
completed in 2001, on the site of a
monastery razed under Communism,
through distinctive buildings by Rastrelli,
darling architect of St Petersburg, via art
collected by pre-revolutionary sugar
magnates to the Babi Yar massacre
memorial. There is wedding cake Stalin
Empire architecture, the Chernobyl
Museum and proud Independence Square.
Upon all this, Kiev has its feet firmly
planted in the Western capitalist future.
The stately mansions of the Lypki district
are now government buildings. The Caves
Monastery, parks and Soviet statues define
ancient Pechersk. The Upper City has
landmark churches - St Sophias was
modelled on the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul -
and bohemian Andrews Descent delights
as it winds down into 19th-century Podil.
Across the river lies a concrete forest of
Soviet apartment blocks.
Kievs music is unmissable, particularly the
superb ballet and opera at the
Viennese-style Opera House.

Bread is central to Ukrainian culture. So is
borshch, a hearty soup coloured pink with
beetroot. Other local foods are varenyky -
large stuffed dumplings, savoury and
sweet (Ukrainians have a very sweet
tooth) - holubtsi, meat and rice rolled in
cabbage leaves topped with a tomato
sauce, and pelmeny, meat-filled ravioli.

SHOPPING#SHOPPING#
Sometimes its hard to imagine that for
decades it was difficult to find anything to
buy. Now you can find practically anything
in fashion-conscious Kiev. The TsUM
department store on Khreshatyk has so
completely thrown off its Soviet past it is
now known as `Kievs Harrods.
The citys first shopping mall, glass-domed
Globus, with its international brands and
fast food hall beneath Independence
Square, has spawned many cousins. Posh
Mandarin Plaza is where the moneyed
shop. Alta Centre has a gallery of Ukrainian
fashion designers.
Metrograd is vast and more down to earth.
It is below Bessarabska rynok, a colourful
and lively, must-see farmers market. But
to get a feel for how most locals shop, take
the Metro to Kontraktova Ploscha, to the
rynok (market) there. And all those dingy
old Metro passages are now bright with
shops selling computers, perfumes, mobile
phones and skimpy undies.
Lively and picturesque Andriyivsky Uziz
(Andrews Descent), in `old Kiev, is the
place to head for souvenirs - from
Ukrainian crafts and paintings to the
ubiquitous Russian nesting dolls and fur
hats. For serious collectors, Socialist
Realism art is well represented in L-Art
Gallery, and contemporary art and
jewellery at Triptych.
