Scenario
You have been assigned the task of tightening security for the sales department of Develetech
Industries. Many of the employees in this department are mobile users, and they need to connect
to the company network and the Internet through devices such as laptops and smartphones.
Running Ethernet cables to the former is often impractical, and the latter can only connect
wirelessly. However, the department manager is concerned that attackers may try to steal client
information. He says that employees often run applications and transfer customer data and sales
information
across the network. It is your responsibility to make sure that the routers employees must connect
to are configured to prevent unauthorized access.
You'll start by defining a unique SSID that employees will recognize and trust. Then, you'll use
WPA2 to encrypt wireless traffic with a passphrase that only employees are told. To ensure that
no one except administrators can alter these important settings, you'll change the default router
administration password. In addition, you'll block any insecure connection attempts to the
administration portal. With this configuration in place, your wireless users will be much less
susceptible to the many dangers of Wi-Fi networking.
