Criterion A – Analysis

Haters and Trolls: -

Today we are living in such a world where we can make any bold, irrational, or abusive statement on
certain social media platforms on the name of freedom of expression or democracy, people who
execute these of acts are called “Haters”. Trolls are people who leave vulgar and ignorant comments on
the name of constructive criticism. They will further have the audacity to continue this behaviour either
to grab attention or to destroy your mental health. My older brother himself has experienced a lot of
trolling and hate throughout his high school life in Canada for no explicit reason. One thing he noticed is
that some of the normal students who were bullying and trolling him were themselves being bullied. So,
when they were trolling him, they were exerting the frustration and embarrassment. Hence, regaining
pleasure and confidence that they are not the only one being humiliated. He has also been a hater
himself during his middle school period. There was a girl who had a little too much mustache for a
female although, it is a natural phenomenon in the body; it is common to see teen girls being trolled for
body or facial hair. The girl in my brother’s middle school was trolled to such an extend that sometimes
people would throw stones at her only for having some visible facial hair. My brother would also bully
and would release his frustration and humiliation on her. Hence, he would distract his bullies into
trolling that girl for having visible facial hair. All trolls whether internet or real-life have certain
characteristics in common like, malicious behaviour (will do anything to get you in trouble or play the
victim card as if you have done something wrong to them), aggressive, two-faced, selfish, ignorant, and
deliberating provoking others in trolling you.

Online disinhibition are some toxic groups in the cyber world consuming information in a very
inappropriate manner and then due to this affect they end up committing the wrong activities even after
knowing this. Eventually, they end up making their own “toxic” culture or group on the internet to
perform such activities. Some examples of online disinhibition can be racism. This was very recently seen
the Hollywood with Nick Jonas’s wife Priyanka Chopra. She had a private conversation with a comedian
Rosie O’Donnell. Apparently, Rosie was unaware about Priyanka being Nick’s wife. Later, in their
conversation Priyanka addressed her full name “Priyanka Chopra”. So, Rosie assumed that Priyanka was
the daughter of an Indian American author named Deepak Chopra because of the same surname.
However, in many parts of the world it is commonly seen to have similar surnames without having any
kind of relation. Everything seems fine until, Rosie builds the audacity to make a public apology on a
private conversation. Furthermore, this apology sounded more ignorant that being remorseful. When
Rosie stated, “someone Chopra”, even after knowing her name. The reason such behaviour of Rosie
O’Donnell should be considered as online disinhibition is because she is a comedian. Hence, she
probably makes such statements and jokes in her day-to-day life and people support such toxic
behaviour. In today’s time there are many instincts where we are not able to process the difference
between trolling and freedom of expression. Trolling is achieved by dropping humiliated messages on
social media platforms in order to mentally disturb someone. It is commonly done by groups of people
with a different ideology targeting someone who doesn’t pursue similar ideology. However, “Freedom of
Speech” is (Amnesty) the right to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas of all kinds, by any
means. Freedom of Speech is the right to have an open mind towards any ideology except any thing that

might physically cause harm in the society. The Gen Z has taken trolling to such a level that it can be very
hard differentiate amongst trolling and freedom of speech of the internet. For example, there are many
people who support and preach the LGBTOIA+ community in terms that it is there to define themselves
by their gender. However, there are people who don’t support the community due to their own beliefs
but that is normal to agree or disagree. Many people get trolled for not supporting or agreeing with the
LGBTQIA+ community, everyone should understand that it is their personal choice and right of freedom
to speech and expression to choose who is wrong or right. Similarly, if another person doesn’t a certain
community of ideology that doesn’t mean they have the right to discriminate and go against them.
However, they can state their opinions and views in a civilized and non-abusive manner.

There is a law (Article 20) in Dubai that stands against trolling and its English translation is below: -
(“Trolling the Online Abuse Law”) “The full English translation of Article 20 is as follows:
Without prejudice to the provisions of slander crime prescribed in Islamic Sharia, any person who insults a
third party or has attributed to him an incident that may make him subject to punishment or contempt by a
third party, by using an Information Network or an Information Technology Tool shall be punished by
imprisonment and a fine not less than (AED250,000) and not exceeding (AED500,000) or by any of these
punishments.
If the insult or slander took place against a public employee or a person assigned to a public service by
occasion or because of performing his work this shall be considered an aggravating circumstance of the
crime.
The offence here is not simply the act of swearing online, it is insulting a third party or attributing to that third
party an incident that may make that third party subject to punishment or contempt.”

(“Trolling the Online Abuse Law”) “In addition to the penalties under Article 20 of the Cyber Crimes Law, the
Court must deport a foreigner convicted for committing an offence under that Article after executing the
punishment prescribed in Article 20 (see Article 42 of the Cyber Crimes Law).”
Unfortunately, there is no official law against cyber bullying in my home-country India but, there is a law that
can be used if trolling has exceeded all limits: -
(Mishra) “The Indian Penal Code, 1860 does not define trolling or bullying. However, various provisions of
the Code read with the Information technology Act, 2000 (“IT Act”) can be used to fight cyber bullies and
Trolls.”

The best way to fight trolls is to report them on the platform you have been trolled on. Record their
arrogant behaviour toward you and report their accounts to the social media platform. After reporting
them block them from any social media platform possible and ignore them as much as possible. You can
also post their behaviour and gather a crowd that can stand up with you and for you against them and
their group.

To be honest, I have never really had much social media access or exposure so, I have never been trolled
or hated before. However, I do know a lot of people who have been trolled for a long time but taking
steps like reporting and gathering their own to go against the trolls has always been in favour for them.

According to what I have observed, Greenfield International School has very good adequate of dealing
with trolls. There is a whole system based upon consequence due to the wrong actions students have
done. Teachers try their best to keep a good level of comfort between them and the student so, if the
students never really hesitate to approach a teacher to stand up for them against the trolls. Teachers
also take their responsibility to make the student feel comfortable in school after the trolling has
stopped.

Plagiarism: -

Plagiarism is something very commonly we see on Wikipedia. The only difference is that you find a few
citations crediting the right authors. Basically, plagiarism is the practise of copying or imitating
someone’s piece of work or gathered information without their consent or without crediting them. For
example, copying quote for history from your favourite author’s book but not crediting them at end. I
have also plagiarized due to my failed attempt of paraphrasing. In grade 10 product design we had to
make a survey on our product. Since I was a new student, I wasn’t aware of how to construct one. A
classmate of mine sent me her survey to fill in my opinion. I thought that all of us are making the same
product, so it really doesn’t matter if I just copy a few questions. After a while I made my survey and
sent it to a few people including that friend of mine. She was really offended that I copied a few
questions from her survey and warned to apologize and change the survey or she would tell the teacher.
Although it is not technically plagiarism but, it is a different of way of getting credit from some else’s
work. We had to make a Business Plan in grade 10 Business Studies. As I was a new student I didn’t
mush of an option. My partner was absent for quite while after the project was introduced. So, I had to
choose a topic and continue to work on it. Once she came back, I explained and introduced everything
to her in a very clear and concise matter. Later, we were given an option to either submit the draft
almost halfway through or work on through the winter break and submit the draft without the
conclusion and reflection. Since we weren’t even halfway, I decided to work through with her during the
winter break. I scheduled meetings and sent her several links and tips on starting parts that I assigned to
her but, she never replied. I ended up taking this matter to my teacher and than she replied with several
excuses. Until than I was halfway through the project. My teacher very firmly told me that if you are
halfway through than let her complete the rest on her own. However, I really wanted to score well and
didn’t want to rely on her. In conclusion, all she did was drew the logo, did the citations of the websites I
gave her, and attended most of the meetings I scheduled. The whole report was written by me. I ended
up getting a level 6 in all criteria’s which she also got but for free. Plagiarism can have heavy charges in
real life as in IB curriculum DP level if we plagiarize beyond a limit than DP diploma can be taken away
from us. In some North American IB high schools, they kick you out of IB for plagiarising. Plagiarising
someone’s work shows how ignorant you are towards their efforts put into those assignments. But then,
what is the difference between inspiration and plagiarism? Being inspired by someone’s work is to be
motivated make a similar product related to their theme or moral but not literally copying it down
without their consent.

What if we find this perfectly written phrase or statement in Google, a book, or any other informational
resource?

Firstly, you should try your best to paraphrase it. Try and write it in your own words that way you will
understand it better. If it seems to perfect to you then, citate it in citations list and index citation. Write
the author’s last name in brackets before writing the statement.

Addiction and Procrastination: -

(Felman) “Addiction is an inability to stop using a substance or engaging in a behaviour even though it is
causing psychological and physical harm.” Addiction doesn’t necessarily has be with a drug-like
substance, it can be to anything like video games or Netflix. The Gen Z has more of problem with the
addiction of devices. They psychologically spend so much of their time of devices doing things that have

zero benefits or relevance for their future. Some of us are addicted to the internet to such an extend
that we are not able to control our behaviour and engagement and end up procrastinating, missing
deadlines, and cutting off from family. Procrastination is the instincts to delay an important task to gain
pleasure by doing something mostly unproductive that is enjoyed. We procrastinate that Math
homework or that French essay because we feel the Netflix documentary is important and fen to watch.
Nonetheless, there are several ways to come out of this continuous cycle of procrastination or addiction.
Firstly, we should learn how to keep a diary or a journal and journal all thoughts and tasks for the day. It
can be anything and you don’t need to show to anyone. Journaling deadline will also keep us updated on
tasks that are needed to be done. Physical activity and exercise are also another way to stay fit and to
get over addiction. We don’t mind spending 2 hours on our phone scrolling through You Tube Shorts,
but a 40-minute workout seems like such a big task to us. Working out or doing any sort of physical
sport will give the motivation to work more and will release a lot of the stress and anxiety. Nevertheless,
if you still feel that you are not good enough or you are doing something wrong, you can always talk to
an expert, a friend, sibling, parent, guardian, or whomever you feel comfortable in sharing your feelings
with.

Digital Citizenship: -

Digital Citizenship applies to the people who have the expertise and self-confidence to efficiently use the
social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Tik-Tok, etc. As an appropriate means of
communication. Furthermore, that person should know how to appropriately critique someone or deal
with someone’s online criticism whether they be an influencer or not.

According to the first element out of the nine elements of Digital Citizenship everyone should have the
right to access the digital world and be open on it if they feel comfortable enough.

According to the second element everyone should have access to buy products or services digitally like,
buying clothes from Amazon or buying a stock in the stock market.

Corresponding to the third element everyone should have the right to access digital communication
whether that be a public social media platform like Snap chat or private social media platform like Gmail.

According to the fourth element if a person has the right to access of all the elements above than they
should have the knowledge about the proper manner of communication on these platforms.

According to the fifth element everyone with the access to elements above should know procedures to
use the social media platforms properly.

According to the sixth element everyone with the access to the above elements should be aware about
the laws that can be taken against them for their actions on social media platforms.

According to the seventh element everyone with the access to the above elements should have right
and the responsibility to spread their opinions in the digital world.

According to the eight element everyone should be aware about how their post on public social media
can impact their audiences mental health.

According to the ninth Element everyone should have the optimal security on internet in terms of
finance and freedon of Speech.

Selfie Culture: -

No matter how fun it seems to take a selfie with friends while driving it is very risky. This what happens
in North America and Southern and Eastern Asian countries every now and then. Since, a license is
applicable at the age of sixteen years old in North America minors misuse this benefit and drunk and
drive play all sorts of social media platforms while driving, just to show how good of drivers they are.

In India there have been several articles on how teenagers stand in the middle of the rail track just to
take that risky selfie.
