Summary of the Bread of Salt

Before the sun rises, the main character wakes up early to get ready for his day and to
buy a pan de sal that his Grandmother loves to eat. As planned, he watched the bakers prepare
that kind of bread for he is deciding to make one that is very tasty. His Grandfather is a coconut
plantation overseer that had spent the last thirty years of his life while his Grandmother has been
widowed for three years. He would think if he was independent to spent his years of service in
their great house. He learned that his high school classmate, Aida, was the old Spaniard’s niece,
his doubts has disappeared. He imagined if he could ask her to have a date. He planned to get
stronger and study harder so that he could get Aida’s hand. During the Thanksgiving Day
program, they played the instruments for their orchestra. He planned to make money on his own
so that he would be able to buy the things that he wants. There’s a night that he dreamed of
spending his weekend in the millionaire’s house by the Hudson. When the Christmas season has
arrived, his feelings for Aida are still hidden. When the daughter of Don Esteban has arrived
from Manila, he wondered if the twin managed to find their suitable husbands during their past
three years in Manila. He was greeting everyone when he saw Aida who’s unwrapping some
gifts and walked towards her and he also greet her. The party isn’t over yet and a lot of surprised
has happened. A couple of hoarse sopranos sang the “La Paloma”, but he didn’t care to find out
who they were. He never imagined that there would be a lot of foods in the party, he tried to
name the dishes but he couldn’t search it. He allowed his greed to have its way, he wrapped up
one of the dishes which is the egg yolks using several sheets of napkin, his other friends had no
plans of doing the same. “Have you eaten?” as he turned around, it was Aida. Embarrassment
filled his body, he walked away to hide his self from shame. When the party was over, they
walked away with their instruments. There was already a little light of daybreak when Pete
divided their collection. He walked him part of their way home. He told Pete if they could stop
by in the bakery. He wanted to buy a bread using his own money to eat on his way to his
Grandmother’s house at the edge of the sea wall. The two of them are the only customer, and
they had time to watched the bakers at work since it is not five in the morning, and the bread was
not yet ready.
