Reading guides

Format and objectives

Our reading guides contain 3 Sections related to 3 stages which involve different purposes

- The Pre-reading stage is mainly devoted to:

 Making predictions about the content by visualizing pictures, images and reading title
and subtitles (examining iconic and linguistic paratextual information)
 Constructing background knowledge
 Having a first interaction with the text
 Anticipating the topic and subtopics
 Determining the genre the text belongs to
 Fostering students’ observation of cues and peripheral information with the purpose
of advancing possible questions and hypotheses about the text
 Finding out about the pragmatic situation that originated the production of the text
(autor/s; expected audience; setting; objectives)
 Advancing information through scanning techniques (spotting typocraphic cues)
 Preparing the learners for reading the whole text

- The While-reading stage is mainly devoted to:

 Interacting with the text


 Reading the whole text
 Getting the gist of the text
 Locating topic sentences and keywords
 Understanding main ideas and secondary ideas
 Locating specific content
 Identifying the rethorical structure of the text
 Checking student’s understanding
 Checking before-reading stage predictions

- The After-reading stage is mainly devoted to:

 Confirming preliminary reading hypotheses


 Enlarging students’ knowledge about the topic/s dealt with in the text
 Discussing, arguing about and reflecting on the issues present in the text
 Expressing personal opinions or points of view
 Tracing cohesion
 Working with linguistic structures and lexical items relevant in the text
 Systematizing structures, functions or use of the language relevant to the text, to the
tasks, to the text type or genre
 Triggering off different activities involving the other skills (speaking; writing; listening)
