Chapter 3- The Water Cell

All groups should respond to Question 1. The rest of the questions will be answered by different groups.

1. Describe the panels which portray the demonstrations on page 18. Which conventions are used? What do they tell the reader?
Which type of transition is used between the first three panels, and why? (All groups)
In the first panel, the light background indicates modern side and the protesters are all cheering with their hands up and show
their loyalty to the king the facial expressions are all similar with eyes closed and open mouths the second and the third panels
are equal in size which show the two sides of the society of the persian people in the second panel the army is using power
with their guns while on the third panel the modernists only defence is by throwing stones although these 2 panels are late
equally the power they have shows a big contrast also the postures of the soldiers and modernists are almost the same. the dark
background of these panels indicate a disaster.With the black postures of the soldiers show they are stronger unlike the
postures in ith in panel 3. In the last 2 panels. Marjin doesn’t understand her parents’s tiredness so she doesn’t understand it
2. According to Marji, how was a king chosen? What was her rationale? What is her father’s reaction? Why? (G1)
3. How did Reza, the father of the Shah, differ from Gandhi and Ataturk? (G1)
4. What was Reza’s original political motive? What trade-off does he make, and why? In the new system, who seemed to be the
real emperor of Persia? (G2)
5. Who does Marji learn was the emperor overthrown by Reza? How does this add to the  conflict? (G2)
6. Comment on the panel at the bottom of page 22. What change does it reflect? (G3)
7. What happened to the emperor’s family, and any who opposed the new government when he was deposed by Reza? (G3)
8. What new government role did Marji’s grandfather accept? What did he now study? Why? (G4)
9. What does Marji’s mother reveal in a flashback? Her husband responds by saying, “That time is past.” Do you think it is past
for good? Explain. (G4 and G5) Marji’S mother was always in panic because she always feared from police taking her father
to the prison things have gotten worse because there were more sufferings, killings .
10. Why does God return after a long absence? (G5) Marji was indispair after learning about her grandfather's sufferings she
started to question how her grandfather felt like

1. How does Marji’s grandmother initially respond to questions about the past? Why? First she didn’t want to answer these
questions probably because she felt very diturbed
2. What did Marji’s father do every day that makes her mother so nervous? Why is this activity strictly forbidden? He took
photos and was arrested before because of that .
3. What happens when a second dead man is carried out on a stretcher during a demonstration? What happens next that amuses
Marji’s family? What does this story make Marji realize, and how does she take action? The crowd shouted slogans however
this man died because of cancer
