ABSTRACT

Background of the study: -Studies conducted to assess the level of depression among
elderly people found that there was increases of number of elderly people with depressive
symptoms. The reasons behind the depression are loneliness, retirement, financial and
family disputes.

Objectives:-

1. To assess the prevalence of depression among elderly residing in an old age home.
2. To enumerate the socio demographic profile of the elderly in residing in old age home.

Methodology:-

A descriptive approach was used for study. Convenient sampling was done to obtain of 60
people. The Hamilton scale and ANOVA test was used to assess the prevalence of depression
among elderly people. Bar graph were used to depict the findings.

Findings:-

The finding of the present study revealed that there was severe depression among the elderly
people i.e. 51.7% and moderate depression was 38.3% and mild depression was 10.0%
among the elderly people.

Conclusion:-

The present study concluded that there was prevalence of severe depression among elderly
people in the area of district Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala, Punjab.
